Is it possible to connect a standard USB-GPS, like the HaiCom GPS HI-203, to the SL-C860's USB port?!
If not, what other options are there?
Advice greatly appreciated!

Don't know about getting a USB GPS unit to work, but you can get CF gps units to work ok as well as bluetooth ones (with a bluetooth cf card).
Tried both these and worked fine, though there is a little file tweaking required.
Main problem is software. You can get stuff which gives current location, not directions, but you may need to source maps your own maps.
