Planning a trip around the world and I don't want to lug a laptop with me, seems the C860 would be the best alternative. However I have some questions:

I'd like to use my Z for development, but none of the roms have a native gcc yet do they?

What would be required for field flashing my Z in an internet cafe?

I'd like to be able to transfer my photos home somehow, when I buy a camera should I have any preference with storage? CF or SD best for accomplishing this? Guessing SD based on next question.

Given OZ is my main destination and wireless networks seem to be rife in it's major cities should I buy a wifi card on the basis I might be able to sneak some free internet access to transfer those pics?

I'm also taking a 20gig usb mp3 player with me, failing the wireless network plan do you think it's worth buying a CF usb host card to transfer the pics to my mp3 player?

Sadly money is an object, so I can't go too wild budjet wise.

I have C860 and make it dual boot to zdebian per this instruction http://zaurusfun.4t.com/index.html. With zdebian you can install gcc and compile code.

You can run zdebian through X/Qt so that you don't have to exit qtopia to use it. For development try zgcc or dev-img-1.5, they are cramfs images of everything you need to compile on the Z.

For flashing a clamshell model all you need is a CF/SD card and the ac adapter (oh, the Z to of course).

I'd go with CF for a camera card as they are cheaper and you don't lose space to the SD DRM securuity crap that no camera currently makes use of. They seem faster on the the Z too.

Have you considered the problem of charging your Z with all the different power outlets / voltages? That's what I'd be worried about on such a trip :-)

I did a 3.5 month trip to OZ/NZ last fall and took my C-760 along. I'd say you'll definitely want to bring a Wi-Fi card. I got lots of use out of mine, especially in Brisbane where they had free access in the Queen Street Mall (basically an entire city block of businesses). Hotspots aren't as abundant as they are here in the States, but at least in the major cities, I was usually able to find someplace that had free access. The Internet cafes were usually reasonably priced too.

As for charging, I bought a universal travel adapter thing, sort of like the one here:

(don't buy this one, as it's been recalled for potential wiring problems)

... but, I got mine from AAA. Basically, it handles multiple voltages and has built-in plugs for most major international types. It worked well, except it's very heavy and tends to fall out of loose sockets (nothing a little tape holding it to the wall wouldn't fix though).

Thanks for your input naytheet, that's really positive, I'll add a CF wifi card to the shopping list. Have to get something similar to that travel adapter as well.

I would flash Cacko onto it, and use zgcc from there. I also use X/QT so you can run zdebian through that or a lot of X/11 applications.

I'd say be careful flashing with only your Z around... i.e. if you put a rom onto the CF card and it doesn't work, how will you boot to redownload the rom image... could get an extra smaller CF card and do a NAND backup?

I got the Powershot A70 for my birthday this year. They're a nice range of CF cameras (A70 is only Type I though, so no microdrive, don't know about the A80).

To keep this post somewhat on-topic with the Zaurus , the movies taken by those cameras can be played directly by most Zaurus movie players (excluding the Sharp player of course), since the movies are motion jpeg with WAV sound streams. It's nice being able to take the card out of the camera, plug it straight in to the Zaurus and be able to view all the pictures and movies without conversion - a must if you'll be without any 386 linux box.
