I'd like to know the answer to this as well for my 760 running Cacko 1.21b.
jdralphs
I'm running the SL-5500 (Sharp Rom) and I'd like to know the same -- I've tried Konqueror and Opera.

Haven't you heard:

http://gmail-is-too-creepy.com/

Maybe you can run Opera with '--with-evil' option to improve the results. tongue.gif

Seriously,

What is in the script on their site that causes the browsers to fail?

I take it you do not like GMail for what ever reason. I looked at you site, and it does not bring out anything that I have not already hurd rumors on. I wonder where all these rumors started, maybe M$, they sure don't like them. Anyways. Beleive what you want. Some of us, really like the service. Sure I wish their was an easier way to delete messages, but I also don't like the BIG adds at yahoo. I also prefer to be bugged by adds of things that I care about, and not by every subject in the world. What email service does not do some sort of scanning, Yahoo does, by the way I also use yahoo. I think an honest question to ask, are these concerns real, or are people playing into fear.

Well back to the original Post, I quess no one knows if Firefox has an embeded version yet. I know 1.0P came out not long ago.

The only embedded versions of firefox and minimo I've seen are for X11 based systems. So, you would probably have success with pdaXrom (if it ran on 5x00) and firefox, but not on the Sharp based ROMs. Unless you use xqt, but I've not seen that for the 5x00 devices.

As funny as I think the google-watch and gmail-is-too-creepy sites are, I think that there are some legitimate concerns. You might want to look into Hushmail http://www.hushmail.com for a secure and free mail service. Of course, maybe I'm being paid by Hushmail and/or Microsoft, and Google is the Internet's hero. You can decide for yourself.

Problem is that gmail use some kind of activex on ie and dhtml with others dynamic stuff i forgot in mozilla / opera. That doesnt seem to be supported in the opera embedded version.

Good bet is to wait for a new opera version, or get minimo ported to qt ! smile.gif.

Its like trying to use gmail on a mas os 9, its impossible, old version of IE, Netscape doesnt work and you cant put new firefox, safari etc on it.

Thats would be nice from google to allow an alternative to they really kick ass interface thought.
pierro78
I am interested in knowing how well gmail run in minimo or firefox too ! smile.gif
(read that it took like 7seconds to open the cnn page with firefox on a Zaurus sad.gif )

BTW has someone tried with opera 7.55 ?

In the meantime you might want to access your gmail through the gmail-lite php scripts installed on a server. Some info here : http://discussion.treocentral.com/tcforum/...ead.php?t=67148

PS :
. read that gmail is working with opera 7.60 which is in preview 4 for linux ( http://my.opera.com/forums/forumdisplay.php?forumid=3 ) but apparently not on arm yet sad.gif
. if someone wants a gmail invitation to try gmail from a Zaurus with opera 7.55, firefox or minimo then I can provide one, just ask in this thread ! wink.gif

I've not had the time to install this yet but I think it'll be my solution for GMail:

pierro78
here http://www.pdafrance.com/pdaforum/showthre...30&pagenumber=2 Sna succesfully uses gmail from firefox 1 on its SL-C700 or SL-C760 ...

I stumled on this thread looking for something else entirely. However, I was able to connect to gmail quite nicely on my 6000 using firefox 0.9gtk (as described on the "I'm flabbergasted" thread in the xqt section of development)

It can be done in sharp or (most probably) oz opie.

as to the gmail paranoia.... maybe true, but
A). does anyone put any thing sensitive or extraoridinarily private in free email accounts?
B ). does anyone have only a gmail account?
and
C). If you run linux and are concerned about mail security get a dyndns address and make a mail server....

if A and B apply and you can't do C then maybe it is more of an evolution/natural selection thing.....

gmail is nice, well set up, handy... and frankly I just don't think I am important enough for my web mail to merit much governmental scrutiny, .... on the contrary, I encourage use of gmail because I think the archives it will produce will (if periodically preserved) be a great record of our times.

You don't even need a browser to read gmail. You can use Sharp email client with stunnel to read gmail via SSL. I do that myself.

BTW, Cacko ROM 1.22 already has stunnel built in and sample configuration files. Read Cacko ROM FAQ about how to setup your email client with gmail smile.gif

That is very cool indeed about stunnel, I am definitely going to upgrade to the new cacko. I have been putting it off - cuz my little ol Z is actually working beautifully with all my stuff - but I can't help going cutting edge. Isn't that we all have Z's and not some micro*oft , palm pda? cool.gif

tried gmail with opera 7.54 on my PC and it doesn't work.

(but it works with opera 8.00beta on my PC)

PS :
here some info on gmail and opera : http://www.scss.com.au/family/andrew/opera/gmail/
found on the opera beta testing forum : http://my.opera.com/forums/forumdisplay.php?forumid=31
ken
Gmail does not support opera. Use the pop3 option that gmail has to allow you to use the sharp client.
pierro78
you are right, gmail doesn't support opera below and including version 7.54 ( I don't have any feedback with version 7.55), but it does run fine with opera 8.00beta on a PC. Hopefully someone (cf IBM Websphere ?) will port Opera 8.00 to the Zaurus when it's out ...

BTW if you want to use the powerfull search features of gmail from any web browser it's possible with gmail-lite :

Logged into Gmail today to find the New Feature was there.

Being the curious kind I clicked and got this:

Not just any old computer. Actually, yes, any old computer!
Basic HTML view lets you access your Gmail messages from almost any computer running almost any web browser, even old ones (not just IE5.5+, Mozilla, and Safari). Especially great for traveling, since you never know what kind of browser that internet café in Siberia is going to have. Learn more

Which leads to:

If you sign in to Gmail using a browser that isn't fully supported, you'll automatically be directed to a basic HTML view of our service. To make sure that you can always access your mail, we’ve developed this basic HTML view that is compatible with almost any browser.

Since your browser isn't fully supported, you might notice that some of your favorite features aren’t available in the current view, including the following:

    * Filter creation
    * Settings
    * Spell checker
    * Keyboard shortcuts
    * Address auto-complete

For access to all of Gmail’s features, sign in to your account from a fully supported browser, and make sure you have cookies and JavaScript enabled.

Fired up NetFront on the Z and sure enough I can log in and check my email using my Z.

Yes, Gmail now works even with Zaurus Opera version 7.25!
Stubear
I've been told, but haven't tested yet, that is you use
https://gmail.com?NoBrowserCheck then opera will work with all the bells and whistles.

I'll report back after further testing

I've tried it with Opera 6 on OpenZaurus and it seems to work fine.

Last time I read this thread, this issue hadn't been solved. I should have read it again before posting. Oh well.... live and learn.

[NEWBIE speaking: please forgive my cluelesness...]

I have a Zaurus and don't know much about anything...

I understand that QTmail can't download from my Gmail account unless I enable SSL . Now QTMail is built in to the ROM so I would have to rebuild the ROM (whatever that means!). So i had given up on this idea. But you seem to suggest that installing "stunnel" will allow me to download mail from Gmail using the standard Qtopia QTMail? I have downloaded stunnel. Now it says something about openssl-0.9.6g library. I am downloading this too. But people are rather cryptic in their instructions here! Would I put this openssl-0.9.6g in the \libs directory?

Well, I'm back! Installed the ipk's for stunnel and openssl. Configured GMail for pop-access; set up the smtp and pop server in qtmail (using 465 for SMTP port). Qtmail gets to "connction established" with gmail and then justs sits there. Help anyone?!

to bump this thread alive again...

Has anyone some specific info on how to use the Sharp email client to download gmail ?
Ok Stunnel, then what ?

To have stunnel and QtMail working properly I guess I need to wait till the new Cacko 1.23 for the C1000 ?

Thanks for any help here.

I was able to get my Z to download my gmail with stunnel but not send. Did you setup QTmail to connect to localhost port 465? that's what it took for me.

*edit

I should also mention that when you install stunnel you need to edit the inetd.conf file to set up the tunnels, you didn't mention if you did that.
nilch
Thanks a lot

I thought the gmail port should be 995.
Could you specify what changes to the inetd.conf file should be made ???
