hello

i installed fluxbox.ipk but nothing happen

can you help

thanks
bastichelaar
Change /home/root/.xinitrc to point to fluxbox...
neopes
bastichelaar, thank you very much!!!
Fluxbox really great smile.gif
wmadan
I'm a little dense, but what exactly needs to be done to point to fluxbox in .xinitrc?
blakeyez
Comment out the line that runs openbox and replace with one that runs fluxbox instead.

bastichelaar thanks now fluxbox is working

but the menu is not pointing to my applications (not my menu)

have i to enter manually all my applications in menu file

or is there any instruction to do that automaticly

thanks
bastichelaar
Try "fluxbox-generate_menu"...

Is there a screenshot of this? This is so cool. I'm a gentoo-fluxbox user and these new wms are making me drool. I'm waiting for the rest of the kde pim pi to be ported before I can even think of going pdaxrom.
bastichelaar
Fluxbox rocks... I just finished compiling vdesk and torsmo, and the look is awesome. I will post a screenshot when my battery is fully charged again.

There is only 1 problem: the CTRL-key doesn't work good, I have to press both SHIFT and CTRL to make the CTRL key work. Any idea?
stbrock
Thanks for Fluxbox. I am partial to its approach of generating a menu where you point when you need it rather than always losing screen space to a panel. It's working well. The generate-menu feature finds a lot of apps and saves time though most will want more customization.

To try it out without editing .xinitrc, you can simply run startx with the path to fluxbox as an option:

CODE
startx /usr/local/bin/fluxbox

The japanese key between Fn and Space, closer to Space, works as the Control key for me, but I haven't tried it in many applications yet.
bastichelaar
Just look at this AWESOME screenshot... Fluxbox rox, I will upload this as a theme soon! The quality is not very good, but it's an impression smile.gif
Xumbi
Any chance you'd post your configuration files bastichelaar?
bastichelaar
Done...
Jenn
nice!! biggrin.gif

does fluxbox support keyboard shortcuts for the icons in the desktop? smile.gif

I've been pimpin' my desktop in my free time, but i've not tried fluxbox sad.gif

am currently using ROX + XFCE

what cool features does fluxbox give you? smile.gif

(sorry for my poor english sad.gif)

Edit:
i forgot: the taskbar shown in your screenshot is really cute! i use xfce's taskbar, but it's kinnda ugly.

does that taskbar supports notification area (or whatever that's called)? biggrin.gif

Done...

I must be missing something, where are they?
bastichelaar
I edited the first post of this topic... The IPK is in the unstable feed on www.pdaxrom.org. Man, it is 2 a.m. and I`m posting this from my Zaurus over GPRS...
Xumbi
Ok, so the sample files must be in the new ipk I imagine...

THANK YOU!
It's beautiful!!!

However, my function key doesn't work*. xev shows it as an alt key, same as the ones with the Japanese characters. Is this just something in a config file that I can fix? I have all sorts of wonderful plans for the fluxbox keys file, but I need this to work first.

*Doesn't work: keypresses are read as normal even with function key pressed.
offroadgeek
can it be configured to have the 'menu' button pull up the on screen menu (same as tap and hold)?

how about including a battery indicator.
does the ~/.fluxbox/keys work as well as the desktop version
are there keycodes for the jogdial and ok/cancel buttons

I use fluxbox as my windowmanager in linux, nice to see that I can use it in the zaurus too.

I use Torsmo (http://torsmo.sourceforge.net) for my battery status...

Torsmo shows battery status?
bastichelaar
Yes, use $battery as variable in ~/.torsmorc...
neopes
thanks =)

Hi bastichelaar smile.gif

i've installed the packages you've given in the first post (fluxbox and the theme). then i've backed up my .xinitrc and created a new one that only contains "exec /usr/local/bin/fluxbox"

then i start X by using "startx" and the fluxbox taskbar appears, but not the desktop, so I just can see that gray-grid background from the X server sad.gif

What should i tweak to get the fluxbox desktop or set the background?

there's a script called "fbsetbg" in your fluxbox ipk. i figured out it was for setting the background, so i gave a try this way:

CODE
fbsetbg -f /path/to/my/background/image

but then appears an xmessage that says it can't find an app to set the wallpaper with, and suggests me to install Eterm. No wallpaper is set sad.gif

any hint? smile.gif

thanks wink.gif

Jenn:

Go to this url: http://www.dangerz.net/dz/xinitrc

If you want, you can wget that from your Zaurus. Use that as your .xinitrc and that'll should everything for fluxbox. Comment out the trosmo and vdesk lines tho if you dont have/use them.
gretchen
For those whose function key also may not work,

CODE
xmodmap /etc/X11/kb/corgi.xmodmap

Solved my problem perfectly, thanks dz!
Jenn
thanks dz! but still no background image, neither a way to set it sad.gif

Changing system styles works fine, but when i change to the only one user style that is present, the wallpaper does not appear. where in the theme config file is defined that image? is it possible to define a wallpaper anywhere in the fluxbox menus? does fbsetbg actually work? yeah, i know, RTFM tongue.gif

i'm getting the same no background problem as you sad.gif

and when I launch aterm, it launches in a transparent window (which is nice) but the shape is all messed up, tall and narrow instead of like a box

Jenn:

Make sure you have the following libraries:

imlib 1.9.15
tiff 3.6.1
libungif 4.1.3

wget http://www.pdaxrom.org/unstable/imlib_1.9.15_armv5tel.ipk
wget http://www.pdaxrom.org/unstable/tiff_3.6.1_armv5tel.ipk
wget http://www.pdaxrom.org/unstable/libungif_4.1.3_armv5tel.ipk

Install those and that should fix it.
offroadgeek
jenn - dz helped me out... apparently I was missing a few libs (due to feed not working correctly, I had to wget and install ipks one at a time).

just install the following and it should work:

libungif_4.1.3_armv5tel.ipk
imlib_1.9.15_armv5tel.ipk
tiff_3.6.1_armv5tel.ipk

damn - you beat me by one minute... you bastard!!! wink.gif

For the background I use Esetroot, downloadable at my website. fbsetbg calls to Esetroot or any other background setter.

Please point me in the right direction to discover how to get my apps to show up in Fluxbox's menu.

Thanks,

wmadan

have you run fluxbox-generate_menu yet?

after that, there is a file in ~/.fluxbox called 'menu'.. edit that

Also, check out: http://www.fluxbox.org/docbook/en/html/x741.html
Jenn
thank you guys!! biggrin.gif

now let's test this cute window manager wink.gif

Hahaha, I spend 5 hours fighting every part of my system, get it approximately working, and now see you have posted solutions to all my problems. It could have been wrapped up in 10 minutes. Arg.
sriram.rajan
bastichelaar,

just curious... since you originally posted FVWM, i have been using that and find it an extremely good window manager. very flexible and configurable.

how is fluxbox better? after tweaking FVWM for a while, why would i (or you) switch?
samxiao
fluxbox is nice
but how do you rotate this?

and how add icons to the desktop?

i trie dto add JustReader
but after it restarts.. it disappear
weird..why?
samxiao
also
vdesk doesn't work for me sad.gif

no icons

it said "Illegal instruction"

same as perl, mathomatic

what can i do about it?
thanks

what's wrong?
samxiao
after playing 2 hrs fluxbox (first time tongue.gif)
the toolbar and menu are bit small for Zaurus

i always click the wrong thing

is there any way to make it larger? for easy access?

i ran 'pmonobut' and 'mb-applet-volume'
both work fine

but again.... too small for the toolbar
sad.gif

anyways
it's a great Window Manager
scoutme
ehm.... can anyone post the original xinitrc?

Sorry for crossposting, but I figured this question would be better placed here:

Is this version of Fluxbox supposed to work with RC5? Because I'm getting the following error: "fluxbox: relocation error: fluxbox: symbol __floatsisf, version GCC_3.0 not defined in file libgcc_s.so.1 with link time reference".

Quite a mouth full smile.gif

Anyway, it looks as if either it expects a different libgcc version, or it's compiled with a different float setting (which changed between RC5 and the previous version). Or is this just a matter of upgrading a package?

Any help is appreciated.

i grab it off from unstable feed
works like a charm on my RC5
pgas
For setting the height of the bar:
edit /home/root/.fluxbox/init
find the line :

session.screen0.toolbar.height: 16

and change the 16 to something like 24 or 32 and reload the config or restart X

For getting the menu to popup with the menu key
edit /home/root/.fluxbox/keys
and add a line:

None XF86Start :RootMenu

and reload the config or restart X

The pb is that the menu appears under the mouse cursor, a nice hack to fluxbox could be to make the menu always appear at 0,0 instead. I think it will be more usable this way.

Odd, that's where I got mine too... http://www.pdaxrom.org/unstable/fluxbox_0.9.10_armv5tel.ipk . Did you install anything special to make it run?
Foxdie
I found I couldn't get fluxbox to work after installing all the IPK's listed in this thread until I rebooted my Zaurus. HTH smile.gif

Hi, samxiao

Add belows to /home/root/.fluxbox/keys and restart X

CODE
None XF86RotateWindows :exec chkhinge

edited:

Before editing, check this.

CODE
xmodmap /etc/X11/kb/corgi.xmodmap

If you want rotation manually, just 'chkhinge' in terminal.
