(sorry - i posted in the accessories area but didn't get a reply so I thought I'd post here)
Can someone point me to a how to or something for setting up a wireless connection.
I just got a wireless router at home and a linksys CF wireless card (wcf12). I have an 860. I tried connecting with tkc 2.5.1 but it didn't work so I just installed the latest cacko rom. I have searched the forums and couldn't find a step by step process for connecting. (the howto on this site under the c7x0 doesn't actually apply to the c7x0 series.)
I have created an entry in the network applet , set to "Infrastructure" and I set the ess-id to the same as my router. wep is disabled. I didn't change anything else in the setup.
I understand that at this point I should see a globe in the applet bar, but there is nothing there. If I try to run netfront it suggests that I connect, but when I try it says that it "cannot find the device card for communication". Is there something I can do to see if the card is even recognized by the z. Should i install anything (I haven't installed anything after flashing cacko) do I need kismet or something?

If you have a network connection setup, when the wireless card is inserted then you should get the globe on the status bar.
Are you sure the card is fully inserted? did any lights on the card flash when the card is inserted?
If this is not happening then the zaurus does not recognise your card.
Is the card mention in the little cf icon on the status bar?
Try going to a konsole, insert the card, and type "dmesg", post any output here.

When I insert the wifi card, the light on the card goes on steady. Nothing new shows up in the applet bar and the little icon used to eject sd and cf cards does not refer to the wifi card.
(by the way, I went back to tkcrom 2.5.1 and installed all the packages from proto's feed)

The light should flash briefly and then go off, until you try to connect.
The fact hat this isn't happening suggest to me that the card is not being recognised properly.
I don't have one of these cards so don't know if it is recognised "out of the box" or if you have to edit /etc/pcmcia/wlan-ng.conf.
The dmesg output does not appear to show anything coresponding to the wifi card being inserted ????
It looks like a standard boot to me.
This is what I get from dmesg when inseting my card, it is a different card, but gives you an idea.
Try it again, run dmesg, insert the card, run dmesg again and see if anything has been added to the output from the previous dmesg when the card is inserted, you should get something.
Also, what does cardctl ident give you when the card is plugged in?
does the "manfid" or the "product info" strings from the above command exist in the file /etc/pcmcia/wlan-ng.conf?

I am having the same problem you described on my 860 with the Linksys WCF12. What did you put in your wlan-ng.conf? I have tried everything I can think of. It currently reads:

Try the version line without the two trailing null strings.
Good news for me! I am using my Linksys card on my s870 right now. Here is what I added to my wlan-ng.conf file :
card "Linksys WCF12 11Mbps 802.11b WLAN Card"
manfid 0x028a, 0x0673
bind "prism2_cs"
I added this as the first card, restarted the system and Yahoo!

Wow, an 870! My 860 is already out-dated, heh. Glad you got it figured out. I'm having a problem, too. I think my card is recognized (it shows up on dmesg and cf applet), but the network applet won't work with it. It always says "connection was failed." I can manually establish a wifi connection, but it would be more convenient to use the network applet. I'm using a low-power socket 802.11b card. Thanks.
Yes, thats it, there is an entry in wlan-ng.conf but its incorrect. (just installed today's latest Cecko ROM)
It reads:

After commenting out the version line the card is recognized.

Ive had the same problems. After searching the forums and reading the fixes to the wlan-ng.conf file...some how i came away with commenting the manfid ID line.

I am currently using Cacko ROM (the latest one) and I am trying to setup wifi with a linksys WCF11 . I had used the network applet to setup the connection, but everytime I use Netfront to access a website, there will be an error msg saying "DNS server not found".
As I have absolutely no knowledge of Linux, can anyone kindly post a step by step instructions on how to edit the lines on the wlan-ng.conf file??

You shouldn't need to edit wlan-ng.conf. There is an entry in if for the WCF11 so that card should be detected.
