For no apparent reason my wireless card seems to have ceased to function as it should.

It has been working for 8 months and I have not changed any configuration files on the Z, nor any aspects of the network.

Basically, when I plug it in now the light goes green instantly, but there is no eth0 or wlan0 device available. I have tried reconfiguring the card, but no joy...

I am using the Sharp ROM (not the latest 'US only' one, but the one prior to that).

Any ideas where to go to next?

I have that same problem, Bascule. You may want to switch to the OpenZaurus 3.2 ROM for a bit, see if that works. However, I don't know if it's a problem w/the Zaurus itself.
