How-to flash a new ROM

  1. Prepare a compatible memory card. It can be an SD or CF memory card, but it must be formated as FAT16.
  2. Copy updater.sh, consolescroll, zImage, initrd.bin, on to the root directory of the prepared memory card. You may choose to use only a zImage file or a initrd.bin if you don't want to change one or the other. If the zImage file is a slightly modified name, rename it to zImage.
  3. Before updating make sure that you backup any data that you wish to save.
  4. Push the [Reset] button on the rear of the handheld using the stylus.
  5. Connect the A/C adapter to the handheld. The orange [Charge light] should now be lit.
  6. Enter the maintenance menu. Holding down the [OK] button, push the [Power] button.
  7. Select item #4 to update.
  8. Select the type of card you prepared, either SD or CF.
  9. The handheld will reboot into a seperate hidden kernel used for reflashing the device, execute the updater.sh script, and reflash it.
  10. When everything is finished, you will be instructed to reset the device. Push the [Reset] button on the rear of the handheld using the stylus.

How-to restore the original SL-6000 ROM

This is for the SL-6000L only. You can also find a backup ROM for the 6000W from Guylhem's externe.net.

  1. Download SL6000L-US-1.12.zip
  2. Extract files onto the root directory of a SD or CF card formatted as FAT16
  3. Connect the A/C adapter to the handheld. The orange [Charge light] should now be lit.
  4. Hold down the [Q] and [T] keys and while holding, push down the [Reset] button with your stylus.
  5. When the unit begins to flash the green [Mail light] will turn on. This light will stay on until it has finished.

Troubleshooting the lights

  • If the [Mail light] doesn't turn on, then the handheld could not find any files to flash.
  • If the [Mail light] starts to blink it indicates an error has occured. You may have corrupt files on your memory card.
