Preface

OpenZaurus support for the SL-C1000 is not fully completed in version 3.5.4, but it will soon be, in 3.5.4.1, with the kernel 2.6. An alpha version exists for those curious (more details at http://openzaurus.org/wordpress/2006/04/10/second-alpha-release-of-openzaurus-3541/).

The latest version including standard distribution files is 3.5.3. The following applies to that version.

To do this, you'll need an sd or cf card, your zaurus and an external power source - ac adaptor or usb power lead. I've included a link to Hentges ROM here, its openzaurus, but with tweaks/enhancements and additional programs, installation is the same, just seperate files.

Acquire the files

First thing, head to OpenZaurus latest c1000 feed, or Hentges feed download updater.sh, a file starting either opie-image or oz-opie-image, and finally the file starting zImage.akita (this is in the kernel folder for Hentges ROM. Note, you should have 3 files now, whichever rom you chose. This is pretty much everything in the folders, except the md5sums, which you can check now.

Prep the files for loading

Rename zImage.akita-blah-blah to zImage.bin (note the capital I). Rename {oz-}opie-image-blah-blah to initrd.bin (all lower case this time).

Place zImage.bin, initrd.bin, and updater.sh into the root directory on your cf/sd card. By root, we mean not inside a folder on the card.

Perform a soft reset

Turn your Zaurus upside down. Slide the switch, next to the battery compartment, away from the battery compartment. Remove the battery cover. Now theres a small button next to the battery, you need to press this with your stylus. Replace the cover, and return the switch to the locked position.

Load the new image

Make sure the zaurus has an external power link (either an a.c. adaptor/usb power lead or some sort). Hold down the Ok button, while holding it down press the power button. A japanese menu should come up, scroll down to option 4 press ok. It asks you which media to use, select either cf or sd (these 2 options are in english) depending on which you used earlier. A dialog will come up in japanese again, select the left button.

Congratulations, your new image and kernel should now load, just sit back and follow the instructions!
