C3000 Customisation Guide

Customisations:

Most information about the SL-C3000/SL-C3100 found on the net is in Japanese and a lot of the instructions out there are for earlier models of the Zaurus. Although a lot of that info is still valid because the C3000, C1000 and C3100 are backward compatible with lots of the older models not everything works. Since the Cxx00 is newer, it has extra capabilities those guides do not mention. Also sometimes things that worked in the older version do not work on the Cxx00 anymore due to it being implemented differently on the Cxx00. This guide is intended specifically for the SL-C3000 model (also sometimes referred to as Spitz) and SL-C3100 model also sometimes referred to as Borzoi) but a lot of the info can also be applied to similar models such as the SL-C1000 (commonly known as Akita). The SL-C3000 and SL-C3100 are very similar. In some areas, however, there are significant differences between these two models and those will be highlighted. The SL-C1000 is more similar to the SL-C3100 than the SL-C3000. The main difference is that the C1000 does not have an internal harddisk (MicroDrive) and the 128MB flash is divided into a 64MB system area and 64MB available for user applications whereas on the C3100, the user application area has 91MB allocated and less for the system area.

Some of the customisations require some additional files which should be downloaded first. Create a folder called custom on a CF/SD card or via the USB connection to /home/zaurus/Documents and copy the files found at http://www.users.on.net/~hluc/myZaurus/custom into that folder. Most the instructions below assume that the files have been transferred to /home/zaurus/Documents/custom

The first thing you probably need to do is to install a terminal/console application and backup your Zaurus. These instructions are primarily for the Sharp distro/ROM, although most of it can be used for Cacko as well.
