Converting the Sharp ROM to English

This is a guide to how to get your Zaurus in a minimal state to start using English.

  • Install a terminal application. You will need to find a terminal ipk installation file; if you have a current Zaurus model then it should be on the CDROM that came with it, see Installing a Terminal.
  • Run the terminal.
  • $cd Settings
  • $vi locale.conf
  • Change lang=ja to lang=en : move the cursor to the "j" of ja, hit x twice; press i, type en
  • exit : hit cancel, enter ":wq"
  • Reboot : choose the menu option

  • Install English help files
  • Change the menus to both Japanese and English
  • Remove Japanese input methods that automatically pop up when typing Zip codes into the address book
  • Other customisations.
