How do I take screenshots of the Zaurus?

  • Use the 'scshot' command.

From the http://www.oesf.org/faq/images/icon_terminal.png program, you can run the command

 /home/sharp/bin/scshot‚name

and it will take a snapshot of the screen and store it in a file named name0001.bmp. Further screenshots will be named '0002', '0003', etc.

The screenshot is taken immediately. You can use the Linux 'sleep' command to pause before taking the shot, so you don't just end up taking a shot of the Terminal. e.g.,

 sleep 5 ; /home/sharp/bin/scshot shot

On any Sharp-based ROM, you can use the following key combination to grab the current screen: Fn Shift C. If you have sound on, you will hear a camara click sound.

  • Install the screenshot applet.

There's a program you can install on the Zaurus which will appear as an applet on the taskbar (near the battery status and clock) which lets you take screenshots at a click of the stylus.

You can download it from the SourceForge.net Zaurus site.

  • Use VNC and your desktop.

You can install the [# VNC†Server] software on the Zaurus, connect it to your desktop or local area network, and then run a VNC client on your desktop, and take a screenshot of that.

  • FN Shift C with newer ROMs

On the SL5500 3.x ROMs and SL5600 press http://www.oesf.org/faq/images/key_fn.png http://www.oesf.org/faq/images/key_shift.png C all together (FN Shift C). The resultant BMP image will be dumped in one of the following directories depending on whether you have a SD or CF card inserted and have space:

 /mnt/card/Screen_Files
 /mnt/cf/Screen_Files
 /home/zaurus/Documents/Screen_Files

Can I view PDFs on the Zaurus?

  • Use Opera

The http://www.oesf.org/faq/images/icon_opera.png browser supports PDF format files.

Last updated: 2002.Apr.05

  • Download QPDF

QPDF is a port of XPDF, and supposedly works better (faster) than Opera. You can get it from here.

What formats does the built-in Image Viewer support?

  • JPEG, png , GIF

The http://www.oesf.org/faq/images/icon_image_viewer.png app. built into the Zaurus supports JPEG and PNG graphics (up to 24bpp, although they'll be displayed as 16bpp) and GIFs.

What video formats does the Media Player support?

  • MPEG1, MPEG2, soon MPEG4

The http://www.oesf.org/faq/images/icon_media_player.png can play MPEG1 and MPEG2 videos. Sharp has apparently created an MPEG4 module which can be installed as an IPK, although it's currently not available. (The player can also handle MPEG3 audio files.)

MPlayer always messes up the screen when played within Qtopia and I don't want to keep dropping to the console. Is there any way around this?

  • Install the MPlayer Shell package (which requires Java) and make sure you use the version of MPlayer from the MPlayer Shell home page. This will give you a nice graphical interface to MPlayer that ensures the screen is refreshed after stopping playing.
  • Or: use Kino2, a graphical front-end for MPlayer. Included in the Cacko ROM.

Can I edit images on the Zaurus?

Is there a way to get my C760 to run an app in 240x320 mode?

  • Yes, it's a simple setting

Yes, just press and hold the icon of the application in question, and select "Display with magnified screen".

You can also have an app (that usually runs 240x320) run in VGA mode (640x480) by having the option de-selected.

Do any of the linux versions of Real Player work on the zaurus?

  • Not at the moment

The current players are X Windows based only. However there is the open source Helix project that is working on an ARM CPU based player that could be given a native Qtopia interface.
