Alternative ROMs
When you receive your Zaurus, the default ROM is the Sharp ROM. This has the advantages of
- Small, fast to run PIM applications
- Lots of software available
- Works out of the box!
This is a new page so please see the discussion.
Some points to consider are what environment you want to run. Choices are
- QT/embedded
- Opie
- GPE
- X11 (which can run GPE and QT apps, but QT/e apps need to be ported)
- X/Qt, which is running an X11 server on QT/e; now there is also pdaXQtrom
If you were looking for a UMPC then you probably want an X11 based ROM. However, if you also want PIM functions, bear in mind it will be a lot slower.
This article is written for the perspective of a new user. For more detailed discussion, see Distributions.
Cacko
Cacko is based on the Sharp ROM and therefore is also quick at running PIM applications. It also features:
- 100% English
- Updated versions of the default Apps
- More device drivers
- Compressed filesystem, freeing up more space on the internal flash for your own needs
This is QT/e.
OpenZaurus
OpenZaurus was an attempt to make a fully open source version of the Sharp ROM.
OpenZaurus, often referred to as OZ is now superceded by Angstrom.
OZ gives you the choice of Opie or GPE.
pdaXrom
pdaXrom is a full Linux installation with X11 server.
Also there is
- pdaXii13, a bug fixed version of pdaXrom beta 1 and 3.
Angstrom
Angstrom is another Linux distribution; currently in beta. X11.
Debian
Debian on the Zaurus.
- PocketWorkstation can be installed on SL-5500 and SL-CXXX. This version runs in a chroot environment on a storage card. There is also PocketWorkstationXQT which is similar but with an X windows environment. See Debian on the Zaurus 5500! for a (old) How-to.
- TitchyLinux can be installed on the SL-C3X00. This uses an X windows environment
OpenBSD
OpenBSD/zaurus is "is an effort to make OpenBSD run on several PDAs of the Sharp Zaurus family. Initially targeted is the C3000/C3100/C3200 models which contain a 4GB CF hard drive internally." Gives you X11.
