Below is a list of excellent applications grouped by specific tasks (as opposed to general categories on the ZSI). Disclaimer: These are not necessarily personal recommendations.

What applications can I use to edit any text file?

  • vi - comes with the Zaurus
(In the Sharp ROM, vi is implemented by busybox. The version that's bundled with ROM 1.31 JP is buggy: segmentation fault on regular expression operations.)
  • VIM - Vi IMproved
  • Pico - A more user-friendly editor
  • Nano - Similar to Pico, but a little better/complex
  • TinyKate - Nice free, graphical editor with syntax highlighting
  • tkcEditor - Nice commercial, graphical editor with syntax highlighting
  • ZEditor - GUI text editor released under GPL. "the best free editor!!!" says a ZSI commentator comparing it with tkcEditor. I agree with the assessment, but wouldn't quite put it in the class of "programmer's editor".
