Is The End For Sharp Linux Handhelds
« on: January 24, 2006, 03:42:37 am »
Folks,

http://www.phoneyworld.com/newspage.aspx?n=1475

This is the new sharp phone/pda and it's windows based. Does it mean the end for the Linux PDA from Sharp.

Considering the work they put in to produce a world leader in PDA development - where is this device going to take sharp ?

I know this may be the wrong forum but i've got a 3100 running pdaxrom and certainly would never consider running a constrictive operating system such as Windows Mobile...

Any thoughts..

same 3.7" VGA LCD...

and a thumb keyboard.  Built-in Bluetooth and Wifi.  Even Mini SD.

However, I wouldn't touch it.  I don't like that sliding layout for a couple reasons.  First, w/ out actually holding it, it looks unbalanced.  Might be awkward to type on.  But most importantly, that screen is going to get mauled to death being stuck on the outside like that.  You will be changing screen protectors every week or less.

I don't like it at all.  But Sharp is probably just offering a new smart phone on a different OS/platform, and borrowing from their parts bin to make it more cheaply.  Imho, it won't be a Zaurus threat.

**edit** (stupid phone distracted me) of course, I could always be wrong.  They pulled the Zaurus out of the US, they could always drop the Zaurus-line totally in favor of something else.  I mostly just hope that it won't be a threat

I've a C3100, i would try to put Windows Mobile 5.0 on my device even if i'm a LInux Sys Adim because linux pda lacks of GPS software navigator and TOMTOM only runs on Windows Mobile....so i would give it a try......

that phone was discussed in november when everybody was thinking a new Z was coming out.  Trisoft basically said that the Z line is not dead from what he knew.  Take it with a grain of salt.
I'm now an iphone user and use my zaurii as serial terminals, perl and shell scripting and when I need 640x480 screens

You know what?  I would love to be able to dual boot sharp rom and windows on the zaurus.  Or even dual boot pdaxrom and sharp rom or something.  Anyone ever tried that?

Anyone ever tried that?
You mean ... tried successfully?

There has been some discussion - someone would have to license WinCE and port it to the Z.
But whoever would want to do that? Nobody just for fun - somebody only for $$. And who would pay these $$?
