Gemini PDA - General Discussion / Flashing hangs at 80% on system
« Last post by d2a on Today at 06:08:38 am »
So I bought a 4G gemini that was stuck in a boot loop - vibrate, show planet logo, black screen, repeat. I've been trying to get it reflashed with some success:

Failed tests
  • virtualbox windows 8 (macOS host)
  • virtualbox fedora 39

Partially working
  • Fedora 39 live USB

Using the live USB (after following the instructions https://support.planetcom.co.uk/index.php/Linux_Flashing_Guide ) I could connect to the Gemini, backup the NVRAM and start the flash process. I chose to just reflash the system partition (to try to fix the boot loop) and it started ok, but froze at 80% and eventually timed out with a "STATUS_DOWNLOAD_EXCEPTION" error. I then tried a full firmware update and it progressed well until the system partition stage where it again failed at 80%. I used the base system Gemini_x27_MP_16032018 from Planet suuport

Once I had unplugged this failed update, I held the esc and silver keys to reboot, and noticed the keycaps blue led light up and the boot screen disappeared and I saw a broken android logo. I retried the flash with the same results but this is at least some progress.

Anyone have any recommendations for further progress? I think i'll try flashing a newer base system next

Astro Slide - General Discussion / Re: IndieGoGo are now refunding

Can those of you who have gotten their refunds provide me (via pm) with their IGG request identifiers? I'd like to refer them to your cases. Especially if you have only requested refunds on accessories like the protection pack?

I'm getting the runaround from IGG about them not refunding anything and I should be contacting campaign owner. This despite several folks here, on IRC and even on IGG Astro campaign comments section mentioning how they have gotten their money back. Thanks.

IndieGoGo did an investigation into Planet Computers and found they broke the rules. They subsequently locked Planet out of the Astro campaign and froze the funds associated with it.

You need to contact IndieGoGo for the refund, and they will use those frozen funds. I'm guessing they're not announcing it publicly because they don't have enough funds to cover every backer, so it's first come, first served until the funds are gone.

Who is "they," Planet or Indigogo?  The only option I could find was to ask Planet for a refund but your post seems to imply Indigogo would be making the refund.

Astro Slide - General Discussion / IndieGoGo are now refunding

Hi everyone. I just wanted to let you all know that IndieGoGo have begun refunding backers of the Astro Slide crowdfunding campaign, but you have to contact them in order to initiate it (they just refunded me).

You need to go to IndieGoGo's Trust and Safety page, and contact them directly.

They told me they are using the frozen funds from the campaign, so I don't know how many people can be refunded. If you never received your device and want your money back, you should be quick!

Gemini PDA - Linux / Re: worth picking up a Gemini PDA today (2024) for Linux ?

I'm using Gemini exclusively on my Gem, with a patched exagear to run a couple of x86 programs. You'll probably need a battery, but there are a couple of threads here about workaround replacements. I'm using a Huawei 2200mAh battery that gives enough juice to compute for 5-6 hours, but probably not enough to work as an all-day phone.

Given that Gemini provides both wifi and data, along with desktop-quality apps, it's my favorite handheld, even more than my PinePhone/kb.

Got my post approved after I have been made moderator of r/Zaurus , heh :)

On a side note, a complete mirror of Meanie's feed would be also great to find, too bad I didn't mirror it myself back in the days.

EDIT: I have tried to send an email to Meanie, I have probably found a working email address of his, fingers crossed.

Thanks Varti!

I thought I got lucky today, but it was a dead link:

Yes, it seems that personal-profile-for-zaurus_arm.ipk is contained within pp4zaurus-1_0-ea4a-linux-arm-OptimizedJIT_nosym.zip.
