Usually late morning for me (EDT). I see some mysql errors sometimes when the site is down.
I do appreciate this site and started this thread to offer help if needed. I'm sure there are some very seasoned admins lurking somewhere on this board. No offence is intended, just a seeing if help is needed.

I didnt notice any mySQL errors... I just got a timeout... or maybe I just didnt get it time to display and I just closed the browser window...
I dont know but either way the site was down for me earlier...
-
Ya I was having issues with it as well today. We're working on a new server right now.
I'll update everyone once things are finalized.

I was having a problem connecting today and yesterday.
Both times were about 11:00 AM Central Daylight time.
I came back online at 3:30 PM today and was having connection probs with https://www.oesf.org/forums/ (https://www.oesf.org/forums/)
I was using Firefox, so I tried Internet Explorer. The site opened with no problems.
Then I changed my settings in Firefox's "FasterFox" extension.
I enclosed a screenshot, it was set at "Optimized"
I changed it to "Courteous" and OESF forums started loading normally.

That's interesting. I'll have to look more into that extension and see what exactly it does to our server.
I wonder how many people are using it..
-
I have opera identifying itself as msie 6.0 and I have the same problems around 10am EDT pretty much every morning. I think it usually clears up around noon...
-
I second that. It's happening to me to. Firefox (no "FasterFox" extention).

I have been having problems with SQL errors for over a week using IE, sample below, not sure what offroadgeek.com has to do with it, perhaps its pointing at the wrong SQL server.
mySQL error: Can't connect to MySQL server on 'mysql4.offroadgeek.com' (4)
mySQL error code:
Date: Friday 21st of April 2006 06:53:51 AM

I had problems connecting this morning 8:00 AM CDT
So the above setting in Firefox's extension didn't help this time.
I also tried Internet Explorer and it failed to connect this morning.
I gave up and went back to bed.
It's 9:43 AM CDT, I'm connected now.
(although it took 30 secs to submit my edited post)

jon_j,
I wonder if that moving to IE and seeing it work was more a coincidence that the site cameback. Probably firefox cached the error and wasn't letting you through, but when you made the extension change it cleared the cache. I'm just taking a stab in the dark.

Your'e probably right about it being a coincidence.
The forum problems seem to be random when they first start, then I cannot browse/click anything for awhile.
It's most always in the morning for me.
Looking at the Firefox extension, it mentions that some of the settings slam the server.
I'm sticking with the Courteous setting.

For the last 3 days I have started to have problems about 9:40 AM EDT.
It just now allowed me to connect and make this post.

so we've established there is a problem, there are some mysql errors and usually happening in the morning. Since I'm pretty sure offrdgeek is on the west coast, I'm guessing this happens around 7am PDT.
Hey DZ, is there a cronjob that happens around then?
-
Like others I've been having problems connecting to site the past few days...usually about 7AM PST here in California....

No cronjob that I know of. I have been having issues as well though so I know what everyone is talking about.
Like I said before, we've been in talks with some people about our hosting situation and that is going to change soon. I don't want to say anything yet as we're finalizing things, but as soon as the time comes I'll update everyone.

Sunday, Monday, of this week, and today, (Tue, 5-2-06), I had trouble reading posts.
It starts first by only being able to open subforums, but posts do not respond.
Then after awhile, the entire site is unresponsive.
This always happens between 9:00AM - 12:00PM (morning here in Central daylight time)
-
I see the same lack of response regularly at around the same time as Jon_J these days. l can dependably get an initial list of new posts, but then can't read any of them. Later in the day, things are back to normal.

Sorry for the issues everyone... I've just been slammed at work.
I'm going to call dreamhost tomorrow to see what's up... I paid $1200 for an f'ing dedicated server and we've had more problems on it than on the shared server.
Please be patient with us.
Thanks!

Any news on that? I have a friend that just asked me what I think about Dreamhost..

Site is still dead in the mornings (US Central time).

The situation seems to be getting worst. I get more incidents of not being able to connect and not just at the regular times as before but much more frequently at random intervals.
-
offroadgeek -- not meaning to pressure you, but to provide ammunition when you deal with the hosting service. You have to give your work priority. Shelling out all that money for a hosting service and still having it suck up time malfunctioning is a real pain.
Like some others above, my sense is that things are still deteriorating. Yesterday I read a post, typed a reply, then couldn't get it to post or access anything else at the site for five or six hours afterwards. I later found that a couple of times it had in fact posted but I did not get the confirming screen and couldn't tell.
Good luck getting the hosting service to deal with the problem. Maybe it would help to tell the hosting service the users of this fairly geeky site include a high percentage of people who manage web services and there will be a lot of bad word-of-mouth if they keep screwing up?
-
just as a heads up Offroadgeek, things do seem to be getting worse.
For me (Eastern time), it used to be in the mornings, now, I get it many times a day.
And since in between my boring office work, OESF Forums is what keeps me awake, outages like these is costing my sanity at times.
How can I exist in this drab office setting without some lively techy zaurus discussions and dreaming of the next zaurus releases et al ?
.. and again when it does work (like now) its pretty fast and spiffy.

The site appeared to turn off at 9:30 am EST and turn back on about 5:00 pm EST today. Pinging seemed reliable while the web content was unreachable.
-
I second that, it's getting to the point that I'm starting thinking of possibe alternatives.

Just this morning I had an error message as opposed to the usual, "Page cannot be reached."
The error was, "SQL: Too many connections".
Maybe that lends a clue.
-
Same here in the midwest USA. While the forums were down, I tried to access:
https://www.oesf.org/index.php?title=Bluetooth (https://www.oesf.org/index.php?title=Bluetooth)
To read some info on Bluetooth. It was also down at the same time.
I finally got connected to the bluetooth page and saved it locally, so I could refer to it later.
I'm going to start saving a lot of webpages for reading offline.
-
Read the announcement that I posted today. I know it doesn't fix the issue at hand, but it does concern these forums in the longer term.
-
thanks for the update dz. maybe we should also have a backup site to go to when the site is down. ironic that this site used to be the site I went to when sharp's site went down. That's before I became a member. If people are donating to the pdaxrom and OE (hardware or other stuff), I think we should also do a little fund raising to help mike out. That's alot of financial burden for one man and this is a community.
-
I would have no problems donating a few bucks towards acceptable hosting.
