Ubuntu Mid Edition
« on: June 26, 2008, 01:56:03 am »
Hello Cortez,
will we see this: http://linuxdevices.com/news/NS4429818312.html running on Zaurus? As I understand it, the core technology is done. What is left to do so that we can see some of those nice screenshots in real? I am definitely interested in that GUI they have. It seems to be the step in the right direction as I think the GUI is the essence of PDA...

Thanks for an update,

Peter.

I'm sure there are lots of people who would like to see this interface on the Z, so if and when I find the source, I'll build it for Debian, if that's any consolation.

Ok, I'm going to let the cat out of the bag,

Remember a few months back, I put pdaXrom on hold pending "a new direction"... this was it and but they weren't willing to fund it, due to the pre-maturity of the product. Now, we contemplated just doing it and supporting ourselves through the whole project, but I didnt want to be a step behind UME, because of not being 100% affiliated. So we decided no to go in that direction :-)

Respect. This is a very good news. So I wish all the best and good luck with the project.
And of course you just got a beta-tester ;-).

Best,

Peter.

So we decided no to go in that direction :-)

Let me get this clear. Are you saying Ubuntu MID Edition is not the next pdaXrom, or am I wrong?
It would be nice to know if it's worthwhile to work on this or not.

One thing is for sure, 100% gnome desktop is certainly not the way to go. I know it now

Cheers,
cortez

Although they based this on Ubuntu 8.04, it's worth giving it a try. Ubuntu 8.04 for ARM isn't available yet, but I guess it should be doable with Debian Unstable as well.
Depending on the reaction of Late I could try to get this to work. If the Ubuntu MID Edition is the next pdaXrom I don't think it makes any sense if I give it a try.

Maybe Late could throw pdaXrom into the open, so we could help make it a success!

Cheers,
cortez

Looks like the asus eee interface, which is based on icewm.

What is the next PdaXrom going to look like? I agree with cortez, gnome is too bulky for the Z.

An update to the UME interface thing...I found the sources:

http://www.clutter-project.org/sources/
http://ppa.launchpad.net/netbook-remix-tea...untu/pool/main/

I'll likely get to it soon-ish, but if somebody else wants to give it a shot, go ahead.

EDIT: The Clutter stuff can be installed from the Debian repos, all that needs to be done is building the interface. Just waiting for my Z to charge up...

EDIT2: The Clutter version in the Debian Sid repos is too new (0.8, 0.6 is needed), so I'll build that.

EDIT3: It looks like you need X OpenGL support for this to work, so, unless people feel like recompiling Xvesa with it (I may try, but not likely), or want to use Xorg, it appears there is little hope. My apologies.
