General Discussion / Where Are The "guts" Pictures Of The Zaurus Pda's?
« on: August 28, 2005, 09:44:22 pm »
Could anyone point me in the right direction. I wanted to take a look, and I can't google them back.
Might be interesting to put them in the Wiki as well.

C1000/3x00 General discussions / New Zaurus Announced: Sl-c1000
« on: March 11, 2005, 10:12:18 am »
It looks like Sharp wants a cheaper alternative to the 3000, which makes sense given that the C-860 has been dicontinued.

Sharp product page
The all important specs
(it seems a but thinner than the SL-C3000. It has the same specs as the C860, but a larger ROM: 128MB vs 64MB, and  will probably have USB host capability).

What I can say regarding ROM supprot is that the new Cacko ROM is more likely to appear for the C1000 than C3000 simply because: I like C1000 more (it's black! , it's cheeper, I already have a microdrive and it has layout similar to current Zaurus models, which means easier transition.

Let me know if I've missed anything.

To me it looks like an incremetal upgrade to my C-860. Apart from the cool new color and a whole 16mhz improvement to the CPU, I don't see the point in upgrading (I don't know what the IPC's look like for the PXA270 compared to the 255, though)

What do you all think?

Software / Essential Z Software Megapost!
« on: January 13, 2005, 12:12:26 pm »
Hey guys.
I'd like to compile a list of very good (mature) software for the Z so that newbies don't get overwhelmed by the avalanche of apps available on it.
If you have very good apps you think no one should miss, reply here with name, link, and whatever info you think is necessary.
I'll update with mine in a few.
Please do NOT post questions/comments so this thread stays on-course, and easy to read

My personal list:

KDEP Pimpi Zautrix is our savior! Send him bug reports here
Opie Reader cool text reader.
Joe's Own Editor. Just a nice CLI text editor.
QPE Filemanager Just a little less braindead than the Files tab.
Qpdf2 Get the freetype package.

Software / Anyone Using Their Zaurus With A Nokia Smartphone?
« on: December 17, 2004, 09:23:02 am »
My current no-thrills phone has been dropped one time too many and it's now misbehaving, so I was thinking of getting a Nokia 6260 to replace it.
Is anyone using a similar phone with their Z? Basically any series 60/70 phone experience would be good. The 6260 is one of the few models with SyncML support.
If you've had a good experience with any other brand (good PDA-phone sync, etc), feel free to share that as well

Off Topic forum / PDA owners, Creative is doing you a favor again.
« on: September 07, 2004, 07:53:58 am »
If you own a PDA with a CF Type II slot, you might want to keep an eye out for the latest from Creative: The creative Muvo2 FM comes with a Seagate 5GB CF drive, and some nerdy hacks have already figured out how to extract the prize from its perverted shell:howto
The result being that you end up getting a 5GB drive (which will retail for $500 early next year) for $250 now.
The rev 2 Muvo drives (4GB) are not usable, but it seems hardware hackers just got an upgrade.
The nicest part is that you can just plop a CF card in there and give/sell the player to someone else.

General Discussion / KA/Pi won't start.
« on: July 11, 2004, 04:53:32 pm »
I installed KA/Pi yesterday, and today it won't start at all anymore.
The hourglass shows up in the taskbar, then disappears, but KA/Pi itself never shows up.
I'm using the latest from http://sourceforge.net/project/showfiles.p...ckage_id=112604
Where do I check the error logging. I tried removing/reinstalling it, but it didn't work.
I'm running out of options I think.

I just tried OpieMail ( I installed it at the same time, but never got around to trying it), and it has the exact same problem. What the hell is wrong with this thing

General Discussion / Console shenanigans. Need help.
« on: July 10, 2004, 10:23:02 pm »
I really like having normal shell on my PDA, but it's been aggravating me since I got my 860.

 - When i start a console (I use Qkonsole, but it happens with the 3 consoles I've tried), my .bashrc never gets executed properly. I put my aliases in there so that I can for example type just "l" and it gets me ls -halF, stupid stuff like that. It never works.

 - Bash-completion only works as a normal user, not when I su to root.

 - In all the consoles I've tried, scrolling back up to check what the output of a particular app, I's painfullly slow.

 - Where can i get a complete GNU toolchain for ARM? the default tools are half-assed, and quite a few of them are missing useful switches.

Any help would be great.
As an extra bonus, anyone who can point out how to import multiple vcards in kaddressbook without having to input them one by one gets a virtual cookie. I have about 70 vcards to import

General Discussion / ROM choices, with a twist.
« on: July 08, 2004, 12:10:37 am »
Just got my machine from UPS (SL-C860), along with a roomy SD card.
The thing I'm wondering about goes like this: I keep seeing/reading tons of stuff about 3rd party ROM, but do they actually improve usability?
For example, I keep having to cross-compile utilities I like a lot ( joe), and some of the stuff while using X (well, the UI).
For example, I though that pdaXrom looked really nice, until I read people asking for kind souls to compile their favorite PIM apps... uh? What have you been doing with your Z in the mean time? watch Xclock?
So, which ROM actually makes life easier? I don't mind dual booting a beta ROM to help debug/test it, but I really need something I can actually use for what I bought the Z for: PIM, calendaring, etc.
Thanks all

I\'m seriously considering a C860, and I have a couple of questions:

- What\'s the input voltage and power on the charger connector? I need this to know whether I\'ll need a travel adapter. I might be able to get away with using a standard wall adapter with the correct specs.

- What is the sound quality on the stereo connector? I\'ll be listenning to music on the Z via a pair of pretty accurate headphones (Sennheiser HD280Pro for the hi-fi nerds ) and I\'m not really willing to put down E600 for something that\'ll sound like a cassette player. Could anyone who owns the C760 or C860 (hardware is the same) comment on that? I have an MD player that I use on the move, and IMHO the quality is decent, in case you need a benchmark.

Thanks for your time, folks
