In my Settings, it's at the top of the ‘Device’ section, just above ‘Display’.

I think it was there from when my (second-batch) Gemini was delivered.  (Can't check, as I reflashed it.)

Gemini PDA - Android / Gemini MassStorage App?

The only disadvantage is that the OS on the PC has to support MTP. But any sufficiently recent OS does ...

It does?  My Mac (with the current macOS) doesn't seem to…

I had to install Android File Transfer, but it's not very good: the window might look like a Finder window, but doesn't behave like one (sorts differently, can't see file info or move files within the drive &c).  Quite buggy, too: can't transfer files with characters like question marks, confuses ‘skip’ with ‘abort’, and freezes or crashes quite frequently.

I'm currently running sshd on the Gemini and scp on the Mac, to transfer files over wifi (which is more flexible as well as not requiring a cable) — but the Gemini sometimes can't preserve timestamps, which will cause problems.

What options might there be?

And a related question: although I've used the developer settings to tell the Gemini to connect in MTP mode, it always starts off with just USB charging, and I have to use the notification bar to switch.  Every time…  Am I doing something wrong?

Would it be an idea to include SD cards here (or in a separate list)?

I can confirm that the Samsung 256GB 100MB/s (U3) MicroSDXC EVO Select (MB-ME256GA/AM) works fine.

But I'll be tempted to get a bigger one as soon as one's confirmed…  (I have a lot of music!)

Gemini PDA - Android / PgUp and PgDn not working

Should we be emailing app authors and asking them to support more keycodes?

(Jota+ is the one that bugs me most so far.)

Gemini PDA - Android / Termux - Using Xeffyr termux-x-repository

What do you get by installing it from that repository that you don't from e.g. Yalp Store (which is what I used)?

They say the best computer is the one you always have on you

You sound surprised…

I've been saying as much for a couple of decades!  Since I got my first Psion, in fact.

That's why my 5mx has been my only personal device (other than a dumb phone and an old classic iPod) for all that time.  I have a MacBook Pro which I love (and am typing this on), but it mostly stays in its dock.  It's vastly more powerful than the Psion, but the latter has one drastic advantage: it's always with me.  (It lived in my trouser pocket, or on the desk next to me, or on my bedside table.  Just about the only time it wasn't within arm's reach was when I shower.)

And, as I've been telling people for ages, even a slow and limited computer that's there is better than a powerful one that's not.

That's why my diary is on my Psion, not my Mac (and probably will be until Planet's agenda app is released).  That's why all my text files full of notes and ideas and to-do lists and quotes and work details and stuff are on my Psion.  That's why my passwords and account details are all in a file (encrypted) on my Psion.  That's why my ‘master’ list of contacts is on there.  That's why I read ebooks off its screen.  That's why I loaded it up with a dictionary, thesaurus, (very old and limited) snapshot of Wikipedia, Encarta, and many other reference works.  And so on.  Simply, as Sir Edmund Hillary would have said, because it's there.

That's also why my Psion lived in my trouser pocket, not in a case or bag or whatever.  The quicker and easier it is to reach, the more useful it is.

If I'm out and about, and find myself wondering why (say) whether birds can move their eyes, or wonder which movie or TV show a quote comes from, I can look it up immediately in a few seconds.  If I didn't have a computer on me (whether you call it a smartphone or PDA or palmtop or pocket computer or whatever), I would either forget to look it up later, or it wouldn't matter by then anyway.

Similarly, if I see an amusing quote or want to jot down a memo or whatever, I can do so in a few seconds.  Otherwise, I'd probably forget.

And if there's some appointment or task I need to remember, I can set it to play an alarm sound.  That, too, is only possible because it's with me.

(Recent example: last week I was on holiday, and gave my Gemini its first real testing.  A group of us were on the coast looking out to sea, wondering whether the strange shape in the distance was a ship, an island, or what.  With the aid of my Gemini, before long I was not only confirming that it was a huge container vessel, but listing its name, size, nationality, and itinerary!)

For people who are always within reach of a desktop machine, a PDA wouldn't have much point.  But for those of us who spend time on public transport commuting to work, or have hobbies or activities that take us out and about, such a device can be phenomenally useful.

Of course, my Psion's already surrendering its spot.  It'll be a long while before all its duties are transferred to my new Gemini (as I use some custom-written apps), but it's already become my phone, my music player, my ebook, and my reference, and my recreation.   I'm not sure whether this particular Gemini will be with me for another 20 years, but I hope to be using it and its successors for a long time to come!

Switch it to CARD 1 under each entry of: Mobile data, Calls, and SMS messages.

Mine was already set like that…  Still says ‘3G’.

Gemini PDA - Android / Gemini fast unlock?
« on: June 05, 2018, 10:24:16 am »
There's the ‘nuclear option’ of having no lock screen at all!

(Settings –> Security –> Screen lock: None.)

Although my Psion 5mx can have a lock screen, I've never used it (and, over 20 years, never regretted that): the 5mx was always in my pocket, in my hands, or on the desk next to me, so there was no opportunity for anyone else to grab it unseen.  (And any really sensitive info's password-protected.)  The advantage of being able to open it and have it instantly ready for action was more important.

Initially, I had my Gemini set to swipe-to-unlock; but even that has been annoying me, so yesterday I removed the unlock screen, and prefer that.

(I'm aware that notifications might not be so obvious.  Are there any mitigations — or any other possible down-sides?)

Gemini PDA - Android / Haptic feedback driving me insane!
« on: June 04, 2018, 07:09:02 pm »
There's a separate app called Gemini Keyboard.  Start that, select Preferences, and you'll see a ‘Vibrate on keypress’ option (and several others).

You should have an app installed called Gemini Keyboard.  (On the desktop screen, swipe up from the bottom to see all your apps.)  From there, select Preferences, and you'll see an option for ‘Vibrate on keypress’.

I have a UK Gemini, which has @ printed below the ‘K’ key.  (The symbols on the front, sloping faces of the keys show what you get if you press them while holding down Fn — but if you were a Psion user, you'll know that already :-)

If that doesn't match your US keyboard, you should be able to change that in the Gemini Keyboard app.  (There are also related settings in the main Settings app -> Languages & input -> Physical keyboard — I don't know which one you're supposed to use.)

Unfortunately, the feet didn't last more than a week…  I'll see if I can get strips to work.

Gemini PDA - Hardware / Firmware update this morning.
« on: June 04, 2018, 07:44:24 am »
What do you have to do to see/apply the update?

In Settings -> About phone -> Firmware Update, mine shows the current version as "Gemini-7.1-Planet-10052018-V2.<2018-05-10 15:09>" (in a landscape-oriented screen).  When I tap 'Detection of update', it flashes "A new version is being detected" but then shows "Is the latest version".

(Mine's a second-batch, X27, 4G model.)

(I'm hoping for headset buttons to work with the lid closed…)

283
Just found another hardware issue:
  • You can't view the screen through Polaroid sunglasses.  I'm assuming this is because the screen was designed for portrait-style displays; it looks fine in portrait orientation, and at most other angles, but it blacks out completely when horizontal.

Gemini PDA - General Discussion / Gemini PDA Gen 2 Features Request
« on: May 29, 2018, 06:07:29 am »
After a few days' use:

* Fix/strengthen the hinge.  Mine wobbles too much when typing, and I'm worried about bending it back too far.  And I've seen reports of it popping off, which is worrying.
* Rubber feet.  They don't need to be large or protrude much, but without them it slides around too much on a desk.
* Allow headset buttons to work while the unit is closed.
* Fix the keyboard: the keys are still much too wobbly.

And of course loads of software stuff too...

Gemini PDA - General Discussion / Tested microSD cards?
« on: May 29, 2018, 05:54:25 am »
I have a 256GB Samsung EVO Select, with 112GB used.  The Gemini needed to reformat it initially, but it's worked fine since.

(Still not enough, though — my music collection is around 300GB…  When 400GB or even 512GB cards become available, I'll be sorely tempted!)
