Zaurus - pdaXrom / Pdaxrom Rc12 For Sl-c7x0/7500/c860/c1000/c3100
« on: November 15, 2005, 05:52:06 am »
Hi Sashz,
Yesterday I tried for the first time pdaXrom on my SL-6000. Everything went smoothly and I didn't find any special problems. Just a couple of details until understanding the organization of the distro.
I want to let you know that I've been really impressed for your work. You have done a really impressive job, with so many applications and packages, and most specially I want to thank you for it.
To the moment, I've just tested the original Qtopia with Xqt-Debian, and I had everything working perfectly, but, there was this problem of a small chip maintaining Qtopia and the X's from Xqt. Too much sometimes.
As I have a big (6 Gb) microdrive with the Debian used for xqt, I've tried also with your pdaXrom to CHROOT sometimes to the head of Debian and try different applications. And, almost everything, works perfectly. For example, Firefox, that is not on your feed, works much better than before, althought it takes a long time to appear, afterwards runs o.k. The same for Thunderbird. And a lot of applications that I had in Debian, like GV, Xcas, Maxima, and others.
Unfortunately, I haven't been able to run one thing of paramount importance for me: JAVA. I can't understand why as before I used the standar jdk-1.1.8 from Blackdown with SwingZ.jar directly from Debian with no one problem. Now if I try an application with graphics, the SL-6000 freezes and I have to reset it.
I have also tried to install Java on your distribution directly, but then I obtain always a "Segmentation Fault" message. And this is only if the application has graphics. If I run some test programs of just calculations on the console, it is o.k.
What do you think? It is almost sure that the libraries for the X's used by Java are too old to run on pdaXrom.
Apart from that, as I said before, pdaXrom is very impressive and I congratulate you for it.
I have found some difficulties in changing from "openbox" to "icewm". In fact, I'm still fihgting with this.
Another point that can be of interest for someone is that the CHROOT doesn't work if I launch the X's with "startx". I have to do it with "xinit". Doing it with "startx", it does not accept to share the display. This must be the famous "-nolisten" that I've seen on your startx.
Sorry for the length of this mail and once more: CONGRATULATIONS!!

Hi Meanie,
I've seen your impressive pages on Zaurus. You have done a lot of things!!
You seem to be the first one to have run java1.3.1 on Z. I've tried a lot of times but always finished with the problem of NOT finding this "famous"  libstdc++-libc6.2-2.so.3 that java1.3 asks for. I have seen on your pages that you offer an ipq package with this library, but when I've tried to download it... no way: a negative answer about a broken link or something similar.
Would it be possible for you to put somewhere this library to let us download it?
Thanks a lot for all your excellent work.

I have built a cramfs image that contains the full blackdown 1.3.1 jre plus jikes and kopi compilers.
The new version I am working on also include the classpath tools and maybe will also include components from jamvm as well which has some of the 1.4 features implemented, but there is no complete 1.4 jre/jvm for the Zaurus afaik.

The cramfs image can be downloaded from http://www.thegrinder.ws/Meanies_XQT/java.cramfs.zip
Of course you will need to install XQT if you want swing or awt which is also available from there.

for more information, read http://users.on.net/~hluc/myZaurus/jumbo/xqtjumbo.html

Personal Java/Jeode/J2ME Personal Profile / Java On The C3000
« on: November 09, 2005, 02:49:19 pm »
I have Java working perfectly on my SL-6000. I have jdk-1.1.8 but also Jeode and apart from that, a package with Swing.
I have installed everything without any use of ipk packages. Just downloading the JVM for Debian (I use Debian under Xqt). For Jeode, I don't care at all about licenses and other similar stories. I received my first 5500 with Jeode so I payed for everything, hardware and software. As I don't obtain any profit for my programs I don't feel any need to do any other way.
Coming back to Java, it should work exactly the same on the C-3000. In fact, my son has a 860 and the JDK and Swing work perfectly. I don't remember about Jeode.
Don't forget that Jeode is only useful if you use  Qtopia. If you change to pdaXrom, it is of no use.
Finally, if someone wnat to see some nice snapshots of Java-programs running on Zaurus, I have put some on the page   http://w3.mecanica.upm.es/~smuelas/debianxqt.html

If some one continue to be interested in having Java installed and working on his Zaurus, please contact me at smuelas@mecanica.upm.es and I will help as much as possible.

Well, I think I can give you some hints. The first one is "bad news": to my knowledge, you will not be able to run j2se, or, if you are able, please tell me a.s.a.p.
I've tried lot of times. Not with packages like the one you mention but downloading directly jdk1.3.1. I obtained excatly the same error message. I did it running Debian under Xqt.
I was able to eliminate this first problem and progress quite a lot, but finally I found a definite stop with some "libstdc++libc6-....." that had no solution of any kind.
Anyway, I am able to run almost the same Java using jdk1.8.1 and the swingZ.jar many times mentioned in this pages. Read them and you will able to have almost the same thing as jdk1.3.1.... :-)

Excuse me for going into your thread but I have observed serious faults on Z6000 using Jikes. Most specially when compiling quite big applications that use a lot of numbers, "double numbers".
It is simply totally faulty. On the contrary, with jdk1.1.8 from blackdown everything runs smoothly with exactly the same results, up to five digits, than in a "big" desktop and running Java5.
Perhaps I am doing something stupid with Jikes, but I've tried many times, compiling and/or downloading it. :-(

Zaurus - pdaXrom / Sl-6000, Pdaxrom
« on: June 16, 2005, 08:05:48 am »
Could anyone that have tried Debian with Xqt and are now using pdaXrom, if there is a clear increase in speed with such applications as Firofox or Thunderbird or any other "big" one?
I will be very grateful to any comment on this subject.

Python / Jython On Zaurus
« on: June 07, 2005, 05:55:53 am »
I have just tried Jython on my SL-6000 using Debian on Xqt and the standard jdk-1.1.8 from Blackdown with the Swing-for-Zaurus "swingZ.jar". It works nicely pointing the CLASSPATH to the "classes.zip" from jdk118, the "swingZ.jar" and the "jython.jar".
I tried and modified a demo program from the distribution (drawing math. curves) and everything went smoothly.
Now I'm obliged to learn seriously Python... :-(

X/Qt / Debian with Xqt
« on: June 01, 2005, 02:25:54 pm »
Hi, Firefox runs like any other application. The problem seems to be the fact that usually, one works in Linux as a "normal" user. In the "standard" way of using Xqt-Debian, one runs as root. Theoretically, this can be dangerous if some "bad-boy-hacker" wants to go into your Zaurus trough the net.
Personally, I have no special secrets on my Zaurus and always make a systematic backup of my micro-drive. I have some doubts about the advantage of creating an user, duplicating all the system files in my home, change all the time from SU to User...etc.

Personal Java/Jeode/J2ME Personal Profile / Swing on SL-6000
« on: May 30, 2005, 07:49:05 pm »
Hi Aslan, I'm very happy that everything went so quick and so well for you. Congratulations!! (Now you have a long way to walk with Java and Swing... :-)
I want to mention that I didn't meant to say that Jeode is better or worse than j2me. (In my opinion, jeode is much better, but it is a very humble opinion). The problem for Zauruses is that J2me is based on java2, so from java1.2 on, and it is very constrained in possibilities. On the contrary, Jeode is an optimization of java1.1.8 for Zaurus. It runs quicker, at least in graphics, and is better integrated with QT. Anyway, the BIG problem for j2me is that, to my knowledge, there is only one "swing" available for Zaurus: the "famous" swingZ.jar, based on the swing added to the jdk1.1.8 at the last moment. This swing doesn't run on Java2 software. It needs to use the last versions of java1.
Good luck with Java. I'm keen to it and if you need some help, you know how to contact me (although I don't look so much this site lately...)

Personal Java/Jeode/J2ME Personal Profile / Swing on SL-6000
« on: May 30, 2005, 09:19:43 am »
Well, don't mind. If you have just said this at the beginning  :-(
What you have is the "personal profile" from Sun. This is a more limited Java than Jeode, and you can't run Swing (to my knowledge) with it.
You should have to uninstall j2me but, perhaps, this is a little bit too complicated for you as it is included with the rom for Z-6000.Instead, try to
get Jeode and install it. A small problem could be that the JVM that you have runs with the instruction "cvm" but there is a link from "cvm" to "evm". If everything goes o.k. you will have cvm in /home/QtPalmtop/j2me/bin/cvm (with a possible link to evm). The "true" evm (the one from Jeode) will be in /home/QtPalmtop/bin/evm.
To use this one it can be convenient to create an alias in your " .bashrc " file in the /home/zaurus directory. You can write a line with:
alias evm='/home/QtPalmtop/bin/evm -cp /path to/myjava.zip:.'
in such a way that you don't have to care anymore about "classes.zip" and/or "swingZ.jar". To compile it should be enough to write:
evm sun.tools.javac.Main Yourprogram.java
And to run it:   evm Yourprogram
Perhaps I've said something wrong, but I cannot test it now as I'm not at home.
Just, try it and tell me the result.  :-)
And be optimistic: finally, you will run some swing classes. For sure

Hi Asland, I have put "classes.zip" and "swingZ.jar", both of them in a new compressed package with the name "myjava.zip", in my Debian-Xqt page at
http://w3.mecanica.upm.es/~smuelas/debianxqt.html
Try it.

Hi Aslan,
I've tried your class and it works o.k. in the Zaurus. BUT, I've removed the lines:

 WindowDestroyer myListener = new WindowDestroyer();
 myWindow.addWindowListener(myListener);

as I've never heard about a class called "WindowDestroyer".
If you want to "destroy" your class when closing the window, just add instead of this 2 lines, what follows:

addWindowListener(new WindowAdapter() {
public void windowClosing(WindowEvent e) {
System.exit(0); }
});

Anyway, the class runs with no problems. If you are unable to run it, tell me and I will put my "classes.zip" and "swingZ.jar" somewhere for you to download it. O.K.?  :-)

Personal Java/Jeode/J2ME Personal Profile / Swing on SL-6000
« on: May 22, 2005, 07:05:46 am »
Hi Aslan,
The only thing that I can tell you is that I've never been able to run satisfactorily "jikes" in my Zaurus. It gives always mistakes with calculations a.s.o. What I do is what follows:
1- I have the "classes.zip" from blackdown's java 1.1.8 and the swingZ.jar in my card.
2- I compile with: evm -cp /mnt/cf/classes.zip:/mnt/cf/swingZ.jar:. sun.tools.javac.Main Myprogram.java
3- I run the compiled program with: evm -cp /mnt/cf/classes.zip:/mnt/cf/swingZ.jar:. Myprogram

Doing that, I've been able to run quiet big Finite Element programs using swing-sliders and all type of buttons, borders, a.s.o.

The other "nice" point about that is that running Debian with Xqt, I have jdk1.1.8 installed. When in Debian, I run the application with: java -classpath /swingZ.jar:. My program
and when in Qtopia as I'have said at the beginning. Compiling from Debian or from Qtopia works o.k. for the other one.

If you have any more problem, please contact me. Good luck

Thanks, adf,

OK, just tried what you suggested....
However, no go...online that is...

I get message at bottom of Dillo browser window:
Code: [Select]
ERROR: Dns can't solve www.google.com
I do see a little tiny black square in lower right corner of iceWM statusbar at bottom of
my display that 'pulsates' graphically when it's trying to connect, before I get error message.

I am connected to net in Qtopia and I did copy over that resolv.conf file before.....

Thanks,

Mark

Have you written the DNS you are using, once in Debian, in /etc/resolv.conf ?
It seems, this should be your problem, althought I must say that I've never tried (nor touched) a C-3000... :-(
