Gpd Pocket Announced
« on: January 11, 2017, 06:41:51 am »
It's a 7 inch laptop, using an Intel Atom x7-Z8700 Cherry Trail processor, with support for Windows 10 or Ubuntu 16.04 Linux. Unlike the GPD Win, Linux support might be then officially supported for this device.

http://forum.gpd.hk/t77-a-very-tiny-laptop-7-inch

"The system is said to be slightly larger than the GPD Win, and it has an aluminum chassis. (..) According to ton-chi-ki, GPD plans to launch an Indiegogo crowdfunding campaign for the GPD Pocket in February."

There's a thread about it over at Dingoonity.org forums....

Looks pretty good to me, probably better for my purposes than the WIN I bought.

Latest info sounds like release in July....so, still a ways off.

Geekbuying.com shows price now at $499.

AFAIR, it's a bit bigger than the Win (173 mm x 104 mm vs 155 x 97 mm, although the Pocket's sizes are only estimated), so it's closer to a netbook than to a pocket device. I'm more interested to the latter ones.

You are correct about size, Varti.....

The Pocket will be a bit larger than the WIN, but much better to type on.....

I added a new sub-forum to the GPD forum to discuss the hardware.
I don't think there will be a big difference in the running of Windows or Linux on it, so not sure there's a point in making additional forums for that?

actually, on second thoughts, is there any value in having a separate GPD Pocket hardware forum, might be better to just rename the existing one so it can encompass both?

This will probably be a fairly low volume forum section....unless the GPD devices really take off and lots of people buy them and decide to post here versus the other GPD forums out there.

So, probably fine to have one GPD device section. Although doesn't hurt to have two....

Thanks for thinking about this.

I'd say keep the new forum for now, in the future we'll see if it will be useful.

I renamed the Win and Linux forums to make them just "GPD Windows" and "GPD Linux", and have separate hardware forums for the two devices. Should cover us nicely.

I really want to get one of these.  I've had the indegogo page up more than once.  I keep closing before committing however, primarily for one reason.

The performance of the GPD Win in my eyes turnd out above expectation.  Considering this is slightly upgraded hardware (doulbe the ram now to boot) I'm sure it would perform great.  Out of box Ubuntu support is icing on the cake.

The cake I wish my aparently aging eyes can't see as well.  Ends up I hardly use the GPD WIn as a PC because I can't read text on a 5.5" 720p screen, so is 1080p on a 7" screen going to be any better?  I've read linux still doesn't 'scale' well like say OSX does on retna display.  Any of you have opinion on this?

Some linux GUI desktops can scale well. I find that XFCE doesn't, but KDE can be tweaked and tuned to suit most displays.

the indiegogo page

https://www.indiegogo.com/projects/gpd-pock...10-os-laptop--2

a geeky friend of mine is also contemplating it, we're pondering getting a pair of them with Win10 loaded, and then dual-booting linux. Price is $793 for the pair, $397 each (£320 each at today's money), which is far from an impulse purchase

Well broke down and will be getting one of the Windows 10 systems.  In the feedback posts they said as long as you were on Kernel 4.4 or better any linux distro should work, so this way I have all OS covered just in case.

in theory they will be shipping the GPD Pocket next month, and I am eager to read some reviews.

I follow the TechTablets.com blog and it's interesting that Apollo Lake (Atom) based devices are becoming increasingly common and that chip appears to achieve respectable performance at very low power, so I can only hope we'll see an Apollo Lake chip inside a GPD handheld some time.

Here's a new review of recent prototype....

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=as_pm43IjJQ...eature=youtu.be

Ignore some of the presenter's dramatics and focus on the Pocket....

Also, there's a strange bit at about 1:00 in for a brief moment showing a desktop computer, but then it goes back to review of Pocket.....

At about 6:00, he opens up back of unit......shows inside....

Then discusses ports....

At about 7:00, he plays a game....

At about 8:45, demonstrates video....

At about 10:00, demonstrates using it with large external monitor and keyboard...

Check it out....
