Angstrom & OpenZaurus / Again Year Passed
« on: February 19, 2006, 02:17:01 pm »
Dear citizens of the world, here is what you should know about Hrw :

- he helps as much as he can on this forum (which means a loooot) ;
- he helps maybe even more (if that is still possible) on IRC openzaurus channel ;
- he is in charge with openzaurus.org, and he does it well ;
- he is one of the most active OPIE developpers ;
- he is one of the most active OE developpers ;
- he is taking charge for 3.5.4 testing program ;
- he has a great sens of humour and of pedagogy ;
- ... and much more

With all respect due to each OZ dev, we have to admitt that each OZ user owes something to Hrw.

Hrw, i already thanked you so many times for your help, i thought you had a zaurus since you were born  . Now i know you've been able to do all this within only 2 years, i reallize how hard you work on all of this. You (and of course many other devs) deserve much more thanks than i could say here.

Keep on doing all of your good work which is much apreciated.

To say this short, dear Hrw : Thank you.

Angstrom & OpenZaurus / Mplayer Not Playing Audio (& Other Stuff)
« on: January 30, 2006, 08:46:56 am »
Same thing using mplayer-atty (on zaurus, far much better than mplayer, and i hope atty version will become the officially recomanded mplayer version for openzaurus, by the way).

On OZ 3.5.4 RC GPE, i also had to

# chmod 666 /dev/mem

(thanks XorA)

Cheers.

Angstrom & OpenZaurus / Oz 3.5.4 Rc Bug & Work-around List
« on: January 28, 2006, 04:29:42 pm »
Hi all,

Here is my report after 24hours of OZ 3.5.4. I will check which bug has already been reported to bugtracker as soon as possible, but here is a list of (some of the) good and (each) bad points i found using 3.5.4 GPE image on my sl-c750. I wrote them down when i found them, so there is no particular order in this list.

   Found before any update :
 :)  beautiful bootsplash, except the GPE logo than comes over it...
 :(  switching to chvt1 during the boot produces garbage on the screen
 :) wonderful ! i can choose French as default language for GPE ! (partial translation, though)
 :) only 83% of root partition used. good point.
 :) root password asked for settings, that is good too.
 :) wifi card works right out of the box.
 :(  ":exit" is not implemented in vi. ":x" works, though.
 :(  reboot from a x root console doesn't work.
 :(  loging in as a root user : "cannot change to home directory".
 :(  "reboot" doesn't work at all, even outside X, logged as root.

   After updating and a hard reboot :
 :( still this nasty gpe splash on the boot splash. Maybe it should be displayed right before X starts up, like the nvidia logo does on my desktop.
 :) boot is quite fast, good point.
 :)  mini-browser is far better than ever !
 :( cannot add wireless monitor to panel.
 :) yeepeekay ! screen rotation applet works !!
 :( no auto rotation.
 :( slight screen flickering.
 :( Aerial panel applet is displaied, when clicking on it, a menu is displaied, but if i click on any line of this menu, then nothing happens and the applet won't respond, untill i remove it and add it back. (Found the reason : "Gdk-Warning **: gdk_property_get(): length value has wrapped in calculation (did you pass G_MAXLONG?)") This affects many GPE programs.
 :(  in System Information, Log Display/Session Log, "df : /dev/.static/dev: Permission denied" keeps on printing. I guess it is due to the free space monitoring part.
 :( enabling/disabling Visual Effects in "Look and Feel" makes the X session crash. Enabling Visual Effects produces garbage while menus are loading.
 :)  VERY GOOD POINT much better batt. life than ever on my zaurus !
 :) IR beaming to my Sony Ericsson T610 works like a charm.
 :( USB Configuration doesn't save configuration.
 :(  Audio Mixer, only accessible to Root user doesn't ask for Root pasword and fails on "Device or resource busy".

Even though this list is mainly here to give the bad points, there are much more good points in this release, and i'm sure most bugs will be corrected really soon.

@devs : you do the most incredible work i've ever seen in opensource projects. OZ i am impressive piece of work, keep on doing your excellent job, and thanks for your hard work.

Angstrom & OpenZaurus / Gpe Ir Keyboard.
« on: July 08, 2005, 05:47:53 am »
According to this page ( http://www.handhelds.org/moin/moin.cgi/kbdd ), kbdd needs the keybdev and uinput kernel modules, but they are not availiable in OE for now.

Their integration seems to require some work, but developpers will try to add it in next OZ release.

So wait and see.

ipkg-link mount /path/where/installed

the path is the one you precised in /etc/ipkg.conf.

Angstrom & OpenZaurus / Feeds
« on: June 08, 2005, 04:54:00 pm »
dear ddjolley,

your question is really strange... you say you don't understand anything to feeds, but you use the bootstrap image ? you like challenge, don't you ?

what you noticed in the /etc/ipkgconfig file is (i think) a piece of crap that should be re-writed or erased in next version... What it means is that to install anything on your Z, you need somewhere to install it ! for example, you can have a line like this

Code: [Select]
dest root /
that will make understand the package manager where to install files when you precise you want them in "root"

About the src lines, they are just here for non defaults feeds. see this page for an exemple :
http://openzaurus.org/wordpress/2005/04/23/machine-feeds/
but required feeds are already set in. that is why you can install progs, even if no src lines are precised in the file.

hope this will help you... otherwise, if you definitely give up using your Z, you can still give it to developpers (or to me... it won't be as useful, but why not...   )

Angstrom & OpenZaurus / Opie 3.5.3 Issues
« on: May 25, 2005, 05:21:08 pm »
DaveWRX, please please use the search function before asking things here. I know it's painfull sometimes, but first it prevents double (triple) posts on the same subjects, and then it is for you the best way to learn because you will also read lots of stuff you don't need to know today but you may need to know someday.

about the dependencies that are not found, i think you didn't yet folloow those instructions : http://openzaurus.org/wordpress/2005/04/23/machine-feeds/

then, to add a local directory as a feed, i think it can be done in the package manager. Clck Action -- Configure -- Options  and add the directory to the "Package source lists directory". (needs confirmation, i'm still in my learning phase  )

about opera, i let you search by yourself, the answer is near.

and about the "?" thing, i just don't understand what you mean, but i'm a bit tired at the moment... could you please precise ?

Cheers.

Angstrom & OpenZaurus / Video How-to
« on: May 24, 2005, 06:46:09 pm »
Hi !

Since Xora launched a video how to for c7x0 serie on the open zaurus webpage, i really really want to try to get a universal how to.

i tweaked a bit his script, and here is waht i now use on my 750 :

Code: [Select]
#!/bin/sh
mencoder $1 -srate 24000 -ofps 15 -ovc lavc -lavcopts vcodec=mpeg4:vbitrate=150:vpass=1 -lameopts cbr:br=64:mode=3 -vf scale=320:-2:::,eq2=1.0:0.6:0.1:0.7 -oac mp3lame -o Z-$1;
mencoder $1 -srate 24000 -ofps 15 -ovc lavc -lavcopts vcodec=mpeg4:vbitrate=150:vpass=2 -lameopts cbr:br=64:mode=3 -vf scale=320:-2:::,eq2=1.0:0.6:0.1:0.7 -oac mp3lame -o Z-$1

use/edit/comment as much as possible for each Z model. I saved it as vid2zaurus and use it by "vid2zaurus file.avi". This produces a Z-file.avi.

Note that Z-file :
* automatically keeps aspect ratio
* needs around 100mo/hour
* enlight colors so that you can see them even without full lightscreen
* is a bit chunky as it is only 15 fps
* produces each one of the two passes at around 50 fps on my duron 1.3 ghz 512mo ram. (So a 2 hours film would be ready in about 2 hours.)

To play it, use Xora's script :

FOR GPE USERS :
Code: [Select]
#! /bin/sh
fbset -n -xres 240 -yres 320;
echo 1 >/sys/class/graphics/fb0/driver/w100fb/fastpllclk;
mplayer -cache 16384 -vo w100 -ac mad -ao oss -framedrop -fs -really-quiet -vop rotate=1 $@;
fbset -n -xres 640 -yres 480

FOR OPIE USERS :
Code: [Select]
#! /bin/sh
fbset -n -xres 240 -yres 320;
mplayer -cache 16384 -ac mad -ao oss -framedrop -really-quiet -fs -vop rotate=1 $@;
fbset -n -xres 640 -yres 480

FOR 5XXXX USERS :
remove the two fbset lines (and i have a doubt about the w100 driver for GPE users...)

Now things i'd like to know :
- is there a way to keep the black frames really black ? the enlighting process makes the darks frames look ugly, but without it, movie are unwatchable unless you are in the dark... Anyone who knows anything in matrices is welcome.

- what is the maximum bitrate each  Z models can play ? i need testers for this, or someone who knows haow to calculate this.

- is there a way to make a gui from this ? i don't know anything in coding, if someone wants to take that, that would be great ! Something with a bitrate calculator, and all. (wonder if it would be very usefull...)

- can someone make the same job for Windows users ? i know virtualdub has some sripting abilities in filtering, and that the filtering process can be saved in a file. Can someone post those files here ?
