Backup/Restore over USB?
« on: July 15, 2004, 01:40:26 am »
Does anyone know a way to do a complete system backup and restore over USB? Basicly, I want to try the C860 and OpenZaurus/Opie ROMs, but I want to be able to revert back to my current system if anything goes wrong... I only have a 32 MB CF card, which I'd prefer not to use, but if there's a way to setup a minimal system to boot off the CF, I could possibly just transfer the flash image over the usbnet...
Thanks.

Basically it's not possible. It might be possible, but would require rather a lot of work on your part. You'd be better off buying a larger CF card.

Sorry about that.

But I'd rather use my CF slot for WiFi... and it probably wouldn't be worth buying a CF card just for backup/flash/restore... Would there at least be a way to bootstrap a restore using a smaller image?
If not, I guess I'll just have to see about buying one from WalMart and making sure I can package it up enough to return it a week later

You can do a NAND backup to SD on the Cxx0 models, but you can't use WIFI while doing a NAND backup/restore anyway so your CF wifi is useless during bavkup/restore.

Also you will need your ac adapter when you do a NAND restore or flash the ROM

SD is too expensive for me... And if I get a CF perminantly, I'm going to want to use it for more than just backup/restore...

Backup, then copy the file to the PC. Then use the card. If you need to do the NAND restore you've then got the backup file on the PC and can clear out the CF card and copy it over, etc.

The point is... if I am going to buy such a card, I'm not going to want to use it and then ignore it... I can't afford "throwaway" CF...

Well in that case you're fine. That's exactly what I was saying. Just use the card to perform the NAND backup, save the file somewhere (like your PC, a CD-R, whatever) then start using the CF card for storage/installation etc. with your Z (after deleting the NAND backup file as you've got it elsewhere).

You completely missed my point, but oh well...

My apologies, humour me and state it again so that I might understand it. I can't see the problem.

:-) I think I just realised.

I forgot about this, it was only that my connection was on a sponsored go-slow and it stopped on this posting that meant I read it again.

In this case I understand what you're saying, but still they aren't very expensive and if you want to flash ROMs then you'll need one. Plus when you're not using WiFi you can listen to mp3s, watch videos, etc.
