Thanks Varti!

I thought I got lucky today, but it was a dead link:

http://www2u.biglobe.ne.jp/~fsasaki/download/pp4zaurus-1_0-ea4a-linux-arm-OptimizedJIT_nosym.zip

Yes, it seems that personal-profile-for-zaurus_arm.ipk is contained within pp4zaurus-1_0-ea4a-linux-arm-OptimizedJIT_nosym.zip.

I have checked at home in my personal archives but I have not found it. I'll see if I'll find the other file you mentioned, I see it was the actual package inside the .zip file. In the meantime I have tried to ask support on the www.java.com site (though I highly doubt they'll still have the archive) and tried to add a comment in these two old blogs, maybe we'll be lucky and they still have a copy of it, though I'm not sure my comments have passed through...

I have also tried to ask on Reddit, there still seem to be a couple of users lurking there, though my post is being rejected by Reddit's antispam filter, I have sent a message to the mods:

As per recent announcement the upcoming Sauna 4.6.0 release will be the last update for kernel 3.x based devices.
The list of devices affected includes the Gemini PDA.

This follows the restructuring of Jolla:

  • 4.5.0 EULA update enables us to provide Sauna SW release as over-the-air update for all currently supported devices (Jolla C, Jolla Tablet, Gemini PDA, Xperia X, Xperia XA2, Xperia 10, Xperia 10 II, and Xperia 10 III)
  • stopping selling new licenses for older devices on the Jolla Shop 96
  • The 4.6.0 Sauna would be the final release for older devices (Jolla C, Jolla Tablet, Gemini PDA, Xperia X)
  • SW releases after the 4.6.0 Sauna release will only be available for devices that we support through the Jolla Shop

What if someone brought over the vendor kernel to something newer such as 4.4?  I've been working on bringing the kernel vendor code over to the AOSP 4.4 kernel but I've postponed that venture for now.  4.4 LTS and 3.18 LTS are both similar enough to where I think it's very doable.  I have very limited knowledge and experience with the C programming language and Linux kernel development though, but I'm hoping that my project is one of those cases where knowledge of both subjects aren't needed so extensively (I hope).  I'm quite optimistic as a lot of the code that was vendor-specific was already there with the 4.4 LTS kernel.  There's a good chance that a lot (or at least a decent chunk) of the code left for me to bring forward won't even need to actually be brought forward as it would already be there.

I found this also: https://github.com/NotKit/kernel-4.9-geminipda
It looks like the AOSP 4.9 with vendor patches applied to it.

Do you happen to know where I could get a Sailfish OS image for the Gemini PDA?  They took down the Gemini PDA from their webpage rather unfortunately but I'd like to give Sailfish OS a try on this device.  I don't believe there is a technical reason to why newer Sailfish OS releases wouldn't work on the ancient 3.18 LTS kernel.  I wouldn't be surprised if Sailfish OS doesn't start using any actual Linux 4.x kernel features until sometime later.

Astro Slide - Hardware / Re: Keyboard-mat

Is it possible to lift the the mat in that corner and use a tiny amount  of contact adhesive to secure a small carbon pad to repair the hole. I don't profess to know the exact method planets keyboard uses but if they work by pushing a carbon pad against a contact on the board below then I assume the carbon pad is what was punctured, so I was thinking you may be able to patch it? Otherwise sounds likely the Cosmo mat is the same but seems a last resort if the Cosmo is still ok. Another possible would be to transplant the rubber cone from another key on the astro. I would try planet again as they will have Cosmo keyboard mats even if they couldn't get many Astro spares

Hi,

tried with my local repair-shop. He was kind of astonished over this device - and said, they only take main-stream... :-( ... if I could only get hold of the connector mat! Ifixit doesnt have spares either ...

I only ever found a couple of very old items on there. Discord or here seem to be the best.

Hi Varti,

Good to hear from you and thanks for looking into this for me.
I am trying to run some Java Swing applications. I was able to get them working in Jeode, which runs Java 1.1 and works well with the swingZ.jar library. I was also trying to get it to work with the latest version of Sun's pp4zaurus (1.0-fcs-b25-1_arm), which is Java 1.3, but that isn't compatible with Swing 1.1. I get a 'getPeer()' error. It seems that Java 1.3 is looking for java/awt/peer, I'm not sure if this has anything to do with sun/awt/peer.

Looking at this post from 2002 - https://forums.oracle.com/ords/apexds/post/swing-on-ipaq-step-by-step-7569 - the older version of pp4zaurus does work with Swing 1.1, which is why I am trying to get hold of it.

I am looking for pp4zaurus build 1.0_ea4-b18.

Thanks

I have also done a search on archive.org, hoping that for one of the multiple redirections there would be a backup, from a different date, to an actual page, but to no avail. I have checked among all the attachments here too, no one has ever uploaded it here. I'll search through my archives this evening and let you know.

Is this required by some program you're attempting to run?

Hi,

Does anyone still have a copy of the original pp4zaurus?

pp4zaurus-1_0-ea4a-linux-arm-OptimizedJIT_nosym.zip

It can't be downloaded from http://java.sun.com/developer/earlyAccess/pp4zaurus on web.archive.org.

Thanks

P.S. I do have personal-profile-for-zaurus_1.0-fcs-b25-1_arm.ipk but I am looking for the earlier one.
