ROM juggling on SLC860
« on: January 21, 2004, 12:16:50 pm »
What is the best method for \"ROM juggling\" on the C860? I\'m currently using the Cacko Qtopia ROM and was wondering if there is any compelling reason to try the TKRom.

If I decide to do so, how do you manage your installations, preferences etc when bouncing from ROM to ROM?

TIA,
 Mike

It would be good to know a comparison between these two] I habve not tried the Cacko one yet but I have heard that TKC have the USB module within the ROM etc. Can someone do a comparison document. Thanks.

The latest cacko and the latest tkc both have the usb reader bit working on my cl760.

There is not much to choose bewtween them at the moment, but I settled on the cacko rom as it had a few extra bits installed that I use like the keno media player.  Also some bits worker better on the cacko rom, ie the sharp video player.

I did a full nand backup when switching which includes all the extra apps I installed, this way I could go back to an install very easily.

The PIM stuff is easy, just sync to outlook before you flash, then sync again afterwards.

Other data files like word docs, spreadsheets, mp3 files etc are help on either my sd card or my cf card so don\'t get wiped anyway.

Any other data I send to my linux box using rsync, and it can then be sent to the new install very quickly and easily.

I love rsync, it is so much better than the built in backup/restore progs. it only syncs changed data so is very quick, but is flexible so it can be used to backup/restore single files as well as whole directories/filesystems.

Thanks for the advice! If I switch, I\'ll definately try the NAND backup. So far haven\'t found a compelling reason to switch from the Cacko Qtopia ROM but I\'ll keep reading. The X11 ROM sounds cool, but without full synch with Exchange at work, I won\'t be able to use it. Maybe someday...

The Cacko & tKc are very similar (tKc was originally based on Cacko). tKc has prettier graphics in terms of icons. I like the extra task switching icons on the task bar. Otherwise, they are very equal IMHO.
My advice is to try them alll including X11.

Cheers,

FYI , Kino2 installs & works fine on tKc.

Indeed it does, but it is preinstalled in the rom on cacko.
