I've just uploaded Zubuntu 1.0 Release Candidate 1. This release supports following Zaurus models:
- SL-C700
- SL-C750
- SL-C760
- SL-C860
- SL-C1000
- SL-C3000
- SL-C3100
- SL-C3200
Instructions on how to install the release can be found on my blog (http://www.omegamoon.com) later today. Please be so kind to give your feedback, report problems, share fixes, enhancements etc.
Merry Christmas to all of you!
Cheers,
cortez

Merry Christmas to you too...
Quick question,
does Zubuntu support kexec? So I can also keep my Cacko on NAND?
Here's how it's done with Angstrom. I'm ready to switch from Angstrom because it seems like a lot of stuff is incomplete.

Quick reply Yes, kexec is supported. Zubuntu adds a special kexecboot kernel from which you're able to boot into whatever distro you want.
Make sure to backup your current Cacko distro!!
Cheers,
cortez

HI Cortez,
Could you add a version for SL-6000(Tosa)?
Can SL-6000 flash the kernel of the version of C7x0 ?
I think the user of SL-6000 don't want to miss the Zubuntu .
Thanks.
-

When time permits, yes!
Can SL-6000 flash the kernel of the version of C7x0 ?
No, this unfortunately doesn't work
-
On my C1000 I have no access to CF cards. They don't show up in dmesg. I'll investigate further in the morning. Otherwise its still really cool
-
Merry Christmas indeed
-
I also have no access to CF interface on C3100
cortez,
I did the zubuntu installation according to instructions on your website. It looks really sharp!
I haven't really used it much yet, as I'm trying to get my other two OS's to boot.
I already had angstrom-opie installed to my hard drive, and
I have cacko installed in NAND
My questions are:
Can I keep my angstrom and cacko installed on HDD and NAND as it already is?
I really don't want to install these OS's onto SD cards, as I want to use what is already available on my Z. (hdd and NAND)
I'm trying to figure out how to mount my angstrom partitions and my cacko NAND partition, so I can place these files in /boot
Angstrom is on hdd1 and hdd2 (/dev/hda1 and /dev/hda2) I tried mounting these partitions in zubuntu, but they don't exist.
As for cacko, I want to try to mount the NAND on /dev/mtd1 and /dev/mtd2 (I'm not sure if this is correct or not)
Edit: I could have put these files in /root on the other OS's before I flashed the new kernel, but I'm already here and haven't access to these OS's now, but hope to figure it out soon..
Simply create a /boot directory in the root of the filesystem. Rename the the kernel image to zImage and copy it into the /boot directory. Create a file named kernel-cmdline containing the kernel startup command line and optionally add a file named image.nfo containing a description of the distro, all in the /boot directory. After rebooting the device your new distro will show up in the boot menu automatically.
-
Thanks to Stefani for mentioning that you need to add the following entries to /etc/modules (and reboot) for working sound and CF slot:
snd-soc-corgi (for c7x0 only, Spitz and Akita is okay)
pxa2xx_cs
Somehow, tskeys seems to be very resource hungry. I ran "top", wrote down the PID of the tskeys process and killed the process (kill <PID>). No problems so far ;-)
Maybe it's needless to say, but Zubuntu runs much-much-much better when using a high quality memory card. I tried a dane-alec 1Gb and a peak 2Gb card first, but these were sloooow. Now I use a Sandisk 2Gb Extreme III SD card, and the difference is really noticeable. Apart from that, use a swap partition of course! Just make sure to add it to the /etc/fstab file so it is used on next reboot.
@Jon_J: It should be possible to mount the HDD and/or NAND partition from Zubuntu. Use "mount -t jffs2 /dev/mtdblk3 /media/cf" to mount the Cacko partition.

where do I find the kernel startup command line for various distros?
I untarred angstrom onto another SD card and it boots from the multiboot menu, but I don't know in which file the kernel startup command line is located.
Thank you.
I did use "pxa2xx_cs"
but CF cards don't seem available
-
I tried Zubuntu on my 860.
I have the same errors as Stefani.
I can't click, i have the message : "selected device is not a touchscreen i understand"

You have to mount manually your CF card.
It worked for me.

The kernel cmdline for Angstrom should be much like the one used in Zubuntu (if not equal). For other distro's I don't know yet. I have to check for Cacko for instance. You can check the source code of course, it's in there somewhere
Try running "dmesg | tail" to see if your CF is recognized

I have the same errors as Stefani.
I can't click, i have the message : "selected device is not a touchscreen i understand"
Could you run "cat /proc/bus/input/devices" and see what handler is displayed for the touchscreen?
If you run "nano ~/.profile" you see a line saying
export TSLIB_TSDEVICE=/dev/input/event2
Maybe this needs to be adjusted for the 860
-
I have three devices :
Corgi Keyboard
Corgi Touchscreen
Touchscreen offscreen keys
For Corgi Touchscreen, i have "Handlers=event1 mouse0"
So i changed TSLIB_TSDEVICE with event1 but no change.
Sorry i forget to disconnect : it works now.
ts_calibrate works now too
-
dmesg | tail only produces SD card mount
Internal HD and 1GB Lexar CF card is not shown.
When I try to manually mount the CF or microdrive, there are no "hda, hdb, or hdc in /dev
I earlier tried MAKEDEV to place hda in /dev
I ended up with 24 hdaxx in my /home/root dir
Then I tried this while I was in /dev
I got a lot of errors:
udev is active
cannot remove hdaxx Read-only file system
I wasn't sure what to do after that...
-
Hmm, strange. You did use "modprobe pxa2xx_cs" or reboot after changing /etc/modules did you?

I didn't know I needed to do this, I'll do it as soon as I reboot and see if that helps.
Thanx

modprobe pxa2xx_cs
Could not load /lib/modules/2.6.26-omegamoon-akita/modules.dep: no such file or directory
I need to get to bed, it's late here (6:22 AM)
-
First have some sleep, then afterwards run "depmod -a"
-
I added snd-soc-corgi in /etc/modules but i still have no sound.
-
I have a problem with the clock.
/dev/rtc doesn't exist.
-
First have some sleep, then afterwards run "depmod -a"
depmod -a

I know I'm a newb, but could I have used the wrong switches when I un-tarred the archives to my SD?
I downloaded these onto my win xp machine:
zubuntu-desktop-rc1.tar.gz
spitz-root-addition.tar.gz
MD5 sums were correct.
Then I transferred these to my other machine (puppy linux), and copied both to my ext2 formatted SD card, then I un-tarred them like below:
First the big file:
tar -zxvf zubuntu-desktop-rc1.tar.gz
About 1/2 hour later, no errors.
Then
tar -zxvf spitz-root-addition.tar.gz
No errors here either.
-
@Jon_J: You did okay I guess. I have still have to check whether or not I messed things up, but my card reader stopped working, so it's kinda difficult to check currently.
-
Does Multiboot support NAND?
I remounted / rw under Cacko and copied the required three files to /boot
Then I remounted / to ro and rebooted.
The Cacko partition doesn't appear in the multiboot menu.
I have to boot angstrom to access kexec to boot Cacko.
-
I'm poking around in /lib/modules and I find:
/lib/modules/2.6.26-omegamoon
but not
/lib/modules/2.6.26-omegamoon-akita
Under "/lib/modules/2.6.26-omegamoon" there seems to be the standard set of modules.
When I issue lsmod -l
I get:
Could not load /lib/modules/2.6.26-omegamoon-akita/modules.dep: No such file or directory
Is there a way to point this to:
/lib/modules/2.6.26-omegamoon/modules.dep (as it is located there)
Edit:
I renamed /lib/modules/2.6.26-omegamoon
to
/lib/modules/2.6.26-omegamoon-akita
Now lsmod -l lists several screens full of modules. (opps, that was modprobe -l)
I rebooted and issued:
modprobe pxa2xx_cs
Module pxa2xx_cs not found
Then I ran depmod -a
the console was busy doing something for about 2 seconds and returned back to the prompt.

My C3000 is currently running OpenZaurus OPIE. Flashing new zImage.bin did not seem to change the boot menu.
My C3100 is currently running yonggun's debian. Once again, flashing the new zImage.bin did not seem to do anything.
I've prepared a 2G SD card with two ext2 partitions and pre-loaded Zubuntu on the first partition.
In both cases I was flashing from a FAT CF card as I dont have any other SD cards to hand. Is there any reason why I cant flash from CF?
-
I flashed the new zImage.bin (multiboot kernel) last night. I used a CF card.
There should be no reason that a CF card won't work in the Sharp Japanese menu, except, be sure the CF is formatted as FAT 16
I have always used compact flash cards for flashing with no problems.
Once the new kernel was flashed, I had no access to my angstrom on HDD, or Cacko on NAND. Then later I got angstrom working by untarring the angstrom archive to a SD card and placing the files in /boot as described on cortez's site. Once I booted "this" card (angstrom), I was able to place the files in /boot onto my HDD installation, and now it is available in the multiboot menu. I later un-installed altboot, which I had previously installed in angstrom.
Sorry for the long off topic stuff, but this has been my experience so far when flashing this new kernel over my existing angstrom/cacko setup.

Hooray!
Ok the story so far
1. Equipment:
Zaurus SLC 3000
D-link DCF 660 Wireless Card
256mb Panasonic SD
4GB Transcend SD 150x
2GB Panasonic SD Class 4
2. Zubuntu:
Downloaded the Zubuntu install files on xp, transferred onto a fat card (oh dear).
Formatted to ext2, unzipped in Ubuntu on my macbook :-D
booted but got errors messages to do with akita sound lib not found
lsusb listed nothing
cardctl didn't work (even after adding etc/module entries)
lsmod listed nothing
No usb devices are recognised or powered.
3. Speed on Zubuntu:
Used 2gb and 4gb and when I loaded the sound app (audalicious?) the window dragging had a noticible 2 second delay. I'll get a sandisk extreme III and test it when I can. Also I'll get a 16-32gb CF and test that too ;-p
4. Multiboot:
Couldn't get kexecboot to work fully.
.nfo wasnt picked up on the partitions but partitions did show up. All partitions were made in Ubuntu 8.10.
a) Zubuntu booted off the first partition but I copied cacko (slc3kb1) to another partition
zImage.bin
updater.sh
mversion.bin
initrd.bin (then deleted it)
hdimage1.tgz
then unzipped spitz-root-addition.tar to each partition
c) renamed zImage.bin to zImage
d) had no idea how to change the kernel cmdline
booted and said hda not found.
Why I am doing this
I had a Hp200LX and it was the best thing ever. Since then I'v had every single pda under the sun (from sony clie to psions to blackberrys to nokia) Best thing ever was that old clamshell, qwerty keyboard. Then I saw a zaurus clamshell so I've been playing with it for weeks.
5. Problems (I've reflashed about 40 times in 4 days so no problems there)
a) pdaxrom full is too slow and a bit unresponsive. Wake up from standy is too slow.
cacko is good but the apps seems a bit limited. I like the functionality of pdaxrom but it really is just too slow. So i'm back to cacko.
c) Dlink DCF 660W. Damn thing isnt recognised by any distro. Cartctl just returns nothing. Card ident - nothing, Card info, nothing. Bought it second hand :-( but getting a Belkin F5D5050 USB to 10/100 LAN Ethernet Adaptor so i can at least get internet. I have tried everything to get this card to work (dlink) but nothing happens. The light goes on but nobody is home.
d) Mplayer can play a movie off the terminal but nogo in x11. Rotated and the sound is out of sync though it is larger than 640x480.
Hope you get zubuntu up and running fully as it would be great for the clamshell. Haven't tried bsd or angstrom yet. Want something quick to type with and mayeb play music and watch movies.
6) When you reflash back to cacko everything is still there.
phew i was up until 6am last night (morning) trying to get it working
-
moomincity,
I'll answer maybe two or three questions for you. Use pccardctl in 2.6 kernel distros, such as zubuntu, angstrom, debian, and latest pdaxrom.
It seems that on my zubuntu install that my entire pcmcia subsystem is non-functioning.
My problem with modules seems to be a mis-named directory, or a config file that points to a mis-named directory.
All my modules are under /lib/modules2.6.26-omegamoon
Any errors I get related to modules spit out:
/lib/modules2.6.26-omegamoon-akita: File or directory does not exist
I have angstrom already installed to my microdrive as instructed by the official page for the spitz.
I just placed the three files into the /boot directory and on next boot, my "microdrive installed" angstrom is available in the multiboot menu.
(It even has a nice CF icon in the selector)
I did the same thing with my "cacko on NAND", but for some reason, cacko doesn't appear on the multiboot menu.
I am also wondering about the kernel-cmdline file, since I think this should be different for other distros, than the one supplied with zubuntu.
cortez told me to just use a copy of kernel-cmdline that comes with zubuntu to boot other distros.
I removed the very last part which is: dyntick=enable debug
I did this for both angstrom (on HDD) and cacko (on NAND).
I didn't think I needed debugging enabled in these two distros. I left it as is for zubuntu.
My *.nfo files don't appear to do anything either, but this is just a description file and should not affect booting.
Oh, one more thing. the Belkin F5D5050 USB to 10/100 LAN Ethernet adaptor draws 160mA under angstrom according to lsusb.
You will probably need a powered hub with this adapter, because it's just 10mA over the new restriction in the later 2.6 kernels on the USB port on the Zaurus.
The Zaurus USB is limited to just 150mA under 2.6 kernels.
The older distros just ignored it, and most USB stuff just worked.
The new distros will "shut down" the USB port when it encounters a device that claims to draw more than 150mA
I haven't gotten my Belkin F5D5050 USB to 10/100 LAN Ethernet adaptor to work because I think my powered hub is borked.
The Belkin F5D5050 USB to 10/100 LAN Ethernet adaptor works fine in pdaxii13, which is a 2.4 kernel distro.

Here my observations....
Installation went smoothly and besides the already lnown issues with the CF slot I noticed the following issues on my Akita device(C1000):
- tskeys is swallowing 80% of the CPU load after booting. Have to kill it manually, but then the brightness keys do not work any longer.
- CF cards always load the orinoco driver additionally to the hostap for my D-Link WLAN card. This is not the best option as the orinoco driver does not support WPA encryption=> fixed by blacklisting the modules
- firefox needs swap space to work. It takes 3-5 minutes on a standard installation to load it and is unusable due to heap shortages =? repaced firefox by midori
- The WICD network manager (announced on the blog) could not be found in the installation
- sylpheed is not in the start menu, lacks a desktop entry
- no ssh daemon is running so remote access is prohibited=> installed dropbear
- there should be a package manager available => fixed by installing synaptic
- rotation does not work in the standard installation
- Pidgin segfaults while starting

Hi,
I'd like to give the Ubuntu installation a try.
Can someone do a step by step guide for beginners like me.
At the moment I'm using Cacko on an SL-C3100 (completely standard).
I have a Belkin USB 10/100 ethernet adaptor (F5D5050) that I can connect to my home
network router and an ADSL internet connection. Do I need a anything else to get started?
I'm running Ubuntu edgy on my desktop PC if that helps.
David.

What do you mean, is the step by step guide (http://www.omegamoon.com/blog/static.php?page=ZaurusUbuntu) not clear enough?

OK, I have to ask...
From the Mojo page: http://mojo.handhelds.org/node/62 (http://mojo.handhelds.org/node/62)
It appears that those Ubuntu packages are built with armv5el optimizations (the best possible for the Z). Are these the ones used in Zubuntu? If so, is it noticeably faster than Debian?
If you can't tell, I'm getting impatient waiting for my Pandora to get here to have a new device/OS to fiddle with.
Thanks.
EDIT: I guess armv5el with VFP would be the best, not just armv5el.

Yep, these are ones used in Zubuntu. I've build the additional packages missing in the Mojo repositories natively with the same optimizations.
If I say it's faster than Debian this may well be because of the installed set of applications. For me, in it's current form, it's much faster. But really, you have to try it out yourself to see if you notice any difference.

I find it many times faster than Andromeda, but I also changed to a new SD card. I went from a Transcend 150x 4gb, to a 16gb Kingston SDHC. Not sure how much of a factor that would be. Even python apps run better (pysol is easily 5x faster. almost no delay). There could also be other factors I am missing though.

How is the amrv5el from Mojo different from Andromedia's base? I can get fast out of LXDE or Fluxbox from Andro's base. I am curious though how much faster the Mojo would be running heavier WM's and Apps?
-
I'm not planning on running the standard WM
Optimizations make a BIG difference. Debian armel is made to run on just about any ARM cpu, so it can't optimize for anything higher than that, causing a slowdown. It's like that all-in-one tool that does everything decently, but nothing extremely well.
Time to go dig out my SD card
-
could it be that spitz-root-addition.tar.gz (http://www.zaurus.org.uk/cortez/ubuntu/download/zubuntu/spitz/spitz-root-addition.tar.gz) has a zImage for akita instead of a 3x00 kernel?
I'm trying ubuntu in sl-c3200 and spitz-root-addition.tar.gz zImage gives me an uname -r:
2.6.26-omegamoon-akita, no modules loaded because modules are not for the included kernel. any other download link to get a zImage for 3200?
thanks for your work
EDIT: I found a zImage-spitz.bin downloaded some time ago from the comments page of omegamoon and it works, testing it right now. nice
-
LOL - Well Cap'N you know from my posts I fiddle alot with WM's, especially the main stream ones. So I will see how well the "optimized" version of debian runs
Will download and experiment with zBuntu very soon it seems.

I eagerly await your report, as I seem to have lost my big SD card. My 64MB one isn't quite large enough

I can not boot to the rootfs of the zUbuntu
everytime when I select the multiboot kernel in the first.
why my multiboot can not display the description of the image.info?
just display the partition of the internal CF slot.
/dev/hda1 (ext3) # Zubuntu Rc1 release.
/dev/hda3 (ext3) # debian Andromeda
when I select the first one to boot to zubuntu, and the zImage is load to boot, but I wait for the message for so long time "Watiting for root device /dev/hda1...." , can't boot to the next step.
what is the problem with it?
But I can success to boot the debian(second option).
-
Thank you very much Cortez for this great release.
I am especially impressed by the speed, even on my cheap sd card. Much better than Andromeda.
As for problems, I have the same as Jon_J with the modules.
Thanks.
-
Cannot seem to resolve my CF Wifi cards issue, it just blinks. Forced into static mode just to get past the "Can't get addrlist" error, which is no small bit annoying, in fact with multiple ip ranges I work with as I go from place to place it's almost a bust. Have manually edited the interface file, issued the same iwconfig's that worked in every other debian install etc ... still no love. Works fine in Andromedia
No default way to measure battery life, needs to be fixed for a release (fine for in house). Apm cli is present in Andromedia by default, figured it or something akin would be in this.
Right Mouse configuration seems to be very limited compared to the "mouse-r & mouse-m" method.
Working on a list of other things, pretty much does not feel "ready for release" too me yet. Just my opinion, great work and I look forward to the end results.
Sound still hit or miss, mostly miss. This is another BIG issue too me, and bears weight when comparing to Andromedia.
I have an 8gb card holding this for further tests, but atm its not ready to replace Andromedia on my rig.
-
Just a note on sound. I have tried the below method in both zbuntu and angstrom.
zubuntu I get no sound
angstrom I get sound
I pasted a quote from angstrom mailing list:
The standard way that I use to test if sound is working on any linux box is this:
cat /dev/urandom > /dev/dsp
That will play white noise until you hit Ctrl+C, and means that you
don't have to be concerned with knowing application x behaves
correctly or not. If you don't get any sound with the above, play
around with all the controls in alsamixer (ipkg install
alsa-utils-alsamixer) until you hear something.
One other thing, when I reboot back to zubuntu, I get an error about SD card not being properly unmounted, and efsck is automatically ran. several times efsck shows a message that it failed.
I never remove my SD card.
I don't know if this has to do with me booting with two different methods.
Normal method is: reboot and choose angstrom from menu.
Second method is: reboot, and since I cannot boot to cacko directly from the menu, I boot angstrom, then kexec -f to cacko
-
Just to let you know, there is a new boot-kernel and zubuntu-kernel coming up for Spitz. I hope this solves some of the problems, like booting from internal flash, wrong modules (spitz instead of akita), build-in support for some of the hardware (compact flash, mtd etc) and extra (wireless) networking kernel modules.

Cacko has a different kernel. I have problems with it recognizing my 4gb because doesn't have a fat partition.

Is the Transcend an SDHC card of an SD card?
-
I have a transcend SD 150x 4gb not a SDHC formatted to fat, havent tried it formatted to anything else. From the other posts Id say it was an issue with the cacko rom as I always needed to flash the testsu sd patch for it to work.

Thanks for the update.
Yes these fixed 1) modules issues like CF access 2) multi-boot menu does show the descriptions of different distro.
However, two new issue arouse to my C3100:
1) the new multi-boot kernel takes several minutes probing /dev/mtdblockX
2) after startx, an error msg prompted 'Unable to establish connection with FAM. Do you have "FAM" or "Gamin" installed and running?' and I lost the background. I also found the pointer flickers a lot.
As such, can anyone send me the original multi-boot kernel? Thanks in advance!

Fatty, sent original spitz multiboot kernel via PM here on OESF
EDIT:
I haven't tried the latest release, I'll download it now.

First I just untarred the new spitz-root-addition to my SD card, I haven't re-flashed the new multiboot kernel yet, I'll do that next.
All my CF partitions are available and mounted now, both internal and external.
I also have a volume control on the taskbar.
One new error though, with my quick observation:
"Zubuntu login: Can't open display :0"
I just typed in "root" (the curser was in the middle of the bottom of the screen)
Then startx
X started with just a hatched background and mouse pointer and nothing else.
I then restarted X (ctrl-alt-bkspace)
X started again like above, then after a moment the desktop appeared.
I going to flash the new kernel now, maybe this will resolve this issue.
EDIT2
Flashed new kernel, cacko isn't on the menu. Maybe I need to get my mtd partition numbers correct in /boot/kernel-cmdline (in cacko)
I selected Zubuntu.
Checking filesystem with fsck, got to about 85% and it failed, then it rebooted automatically.
2nd boot, it didn't need the filesysytm check.
I still get the above error message:
Zubuntu login: Can't open display :0
I had to restart X a second time, it still acts like I posted above.
I tried to set the date/time with the "date" command. The screen flashed and locked up.
The date/time changed on the taskbar to the new entry. (the old date was jan 01 1970)
I need to use the reset switch in the battery box now.
Back in Zubuntu. Taskmanager is showing CPU @ 100% constantly now. On first install, it would vary and settle down to about 40-50%
I don't see any high numbers, I have about 12 entries showing -1% all others are 0%
terminal takes a lot longer to launch now.
Using top, tskeys is using 92.5% CPU. Before I tried to kill it, it just went away by itself.
EDIT3
If I wait long enough after X starts, I also get the error that Fatty posted about above.
'Unable to establish connection with FAM. Do you have "FAM" or "Gamin" installed and running?'
-
Fatty, sent original spitz multiboot kernel via PM here on OESF
EDIT:
I haven't tried the latest release, I'll download it now. (I've been at another forum reading about ripping/saving blu-ray discs)
Thanks JonJ! Flashed and is much faster! Since the description is not a must, I'll keep using the old one.
BTW, any Pretec WIFI CF user able to bring up wifi under Zubuntu? With the new patches, my card is recognized as wlan0 (from dmesg), but I failed to bring up the interface and the CF keeps blinking. The CF works under Debian as eth1.
-
I've tried to run Cacko from NAND with zubuntu with my C860
I can see Cacko in the menu but it doesn't want to boot.
I used /var/log/dmesg for kernel-cmdline.

If yes, please send me a copy of the kernal. My Planex GW-CF11X also fail to load...

PMed.
That will fix the slow probing issue, but no distro description will be shown.

i have tried this using my 3100, but i found the following traps
a/ the boot menu options are different: it has no (Internal Flash Experiment) option, only the CF option is displayed (the internal CF)
b/ when i choose this option the kernel was trapped by saying "Warning: unable to open an initial console".
it seems like there should be a step on flashing the Internal installation on the Zubuntu. Please advise for any extra steps involved. Thz.

a. The internal version is only experimental. The method provided by Cortez at the moment install the distro in SD only. In fact, afaik, the multiboot kernel will search any valid partition (SD, CF, internal HDD or even internal mem block) with valid boot image/kernel command/description within /boot. So it is only up to you where to place the distros.
b. For the initial console issue as well as rtc one could be solved as advised by suggested in Cortez's blog:
Booting in the emergency system, mounting the zubuntu root file system, changing to /dev and there doing:
mknod -m 660 console c 5 1
mknod -m 660 null c 1 3
mknod -m 660 rtc c 10 135

O...... i've just reformated the MD for android.... seems like i need to untar the desktop again for another couple of hours ... lol

I'm trying to get wifi working and the settings files seem to be in different places than pdaxrom or angstrom.
I have an ambicom WL1100C-CF. This card works fine in cacko, pdaxrom, and angstrom.
What is the preferred method to get wifi connected in ubuntu/zubuntu? (without a GUI for now)
My access point is open with no encryption when I'm trying this.
So I went to ubuntu forums and studied this howto:
http://ubuntuforums.org/showthread.php?t=5...=network+config (http://ubuntuforums.org/showthread.php?t=571188&highlight=network+config)
Unencrypted Connection
All commands typed at the command line:
<interface> = wlan0 in my case.
ifconfig down
dhclient -r (error: There is already a pid file /var/run/dhclient.pid with pid 0 wifi0: unknown hardware address type 801 Can't create addrlist socket)
ifconfig up (card lights up and flashes)
iwconfig essid "ESSID_IN_QUOTES" (card lights up and stays lit)
iwconfig mode Managed
dhclient (error: There is already a pid file /var/run/dhclient.pid with pid 0 wifi0: unknown hardware address type 801 Can't create addrlist socket )
-
I'd try removing the pid file and trying again, and maybe also killing dhclient (killall dhclient).
If that still doesn't work, I've had issues with usb0 making dhclient fail for wlan0 for some reason (that wouldn't be the error here, but it might pop up afterwards).

@jon_j: I have the same card and had the same problem: here I what I did to get it work.
1. get the modules which work: Orinoco does the job, while hostap/hermes don't, so add the following lines to /etc/modprobe.d/blacklist:
blacklist hostap_cs
blacklist hostap
backlist hermes
2. If you don't reboot, unload hostap with rmmod
3. next time you put your card in it should be attributed eth0, so set it up in /etc/network/interfaces
4. to avoid the problem with dhcp, set it up with static ip: for example
iface eth0 inet static
address 192.168.11.4
netmask 255.255.255.0
gateway 192.168.11.1
5. ifup eth0
6. if it still doesn't work, check that /etc/resolv.conf points to your router's ip. For example:
nameserver 192.168.11.1
Hope this helps
-
Mine is a Pretec wifi cf and works when dual boot to Debian (up as eth1). In Zubuntu, the card is recognized as wlan0 so I tried editing /etc/network/interface & /etc/resolv.conf directly (all static settings) as in Debian but with no luck. Card keeps blinking.
Time to work and will test later.
-
There is also another problem on the /dev/shm as well.
[initscripts: BOOT FAILURE: checkroot.sh can't fsck /dev/shm/root because /dev/shm is mounted nodev]
However, I have searched the Debian bug fixed site and found out the following work-around:-
http://bugs.debian.org/cgi-bin/bugreport.cgi?bug=386347 (http://bugs.debian.org/cgi-bin/bugreport.cgi?bug=386347)
attached is my modified /etc/init.d/checkroot.sh aligned to the suggestions raised in that URL

I've removed wicd at some point. You can try to get (wireless) network going by re-installing wicd. It is untested, but it may be worth a try
Cheers,
cortez

I have the zubuntu system on a 4G SD card, but the big SD card cannot be detected in the emergency system.
-
@lineager: Why not make a small partition on this 4Gb card and install a small console image in it. Works great as an emergency solution! When you add the nand utilities you're even able to flash the NAND partitions from there.
By the way, people reporting that detection of the NAND partitions takes extremely long during booting, try erasing or re-flashing the NAND, this solves this problem.
-
I'm not going to go with matthis's suggestion to use orinoco and blacklist hostap.
Every thread I have seen regarding orinco vs. hostap suggests using hostap with wifi cards with prism2 chipset and newer firmware.
This card works with hostap and wpa/wpasupplicant in Cacko, pdaxii13, and (angstrom GPE and opie)
I now have a question. How can I force apt-get to find a local package?
I copied wicd_1.5.2_1_all.deb to my cf card. Card is mounted.
apt-get /media/cf/wicd_1.5.2_1_all.deb
E: Couldn't find package wicd_1.5.2_1_all.deb
So I cd to /media/cf and tried both:
apt-get /media/cf/wicd_1.5.2_1_all.deb
apt-get wicd_1.5.2_1_all.deb
Same error as above. There must be a way to force apt-get to "see" a package that is in the same directory.
I also tried apt-get wicd
Thank you
Jon
-
You could use dpkg -i instead.
-
You could use dpkg -i instead.
Thanks, that worked. I was searching the ubuntu forums for apt-get and local packages, with no results.
Unfortunately I'm now dpkg -r wicd, as it locks up and doesn't respond when I try to set up it's preferences.
cortez, I don't think wicd is ready for installation. It seems to be too heavy and auto-loads into the tray.
When I launch it, it takes awhile to load and goes into "not responding" mode, if it doesn't display "not responding" and I select preferences, the following dialog goes into "not responding" mode and I have to close it. That's why I uninstalled it.
-
There is also another problem on the /dev/shm as well.
[initscripts: BOOT FAILURE: checkroot.sh can't fsck /dev/shm/root because /dev/shm is mounted nodev]
However, I have searched the Debian bug fixed site and found out the following work-around:-

I tried this and it seems to work so far. I just renamed /etc/init.d/checkroot.sh to checkroot.sh.bak then copied your checkroot.sh to /etc/init.d/
I was previously having problems with my card being unmounted improperly. I boot angstrom, then kexec to cacko from within angstrom. I think somewhere in these boot processes, the card is unmounted wrongly.
Many times, booting zubuntu gives me an error about filesystem being unmounted uncleanly.
Then fsck starts automatically, but previously, many times it failed and either auto-rebooted, or sent me to a maintenance console to perform a manual fsck.
-
Great work. as soon as some clarification on installing to flash is available count me in. Also, i think it would be interesting to test the netbook remix interface on the zaurus seems like a good fit until some headway is made on the UbuntuMID platform. Im using the remix right now as a matter of fact, on a dell mini 9.
edit: if time avails are there any differences between the installation procedure for a multi-boot set-up and a single boot that i should be aware of? personally, i would like to commit to one distro. threesomes are not my thing, after all you can only boot one at a time.
-
I've now re-flashed my C3000 with Angstrom plus the multi-boot kernel. Zubuntu now boots fine from my SD card, I'll check out getting Angstrom working shortly, but first, I"ve been itching to see Zubuntu in action.
Cortez. this is a stunning piece of work, my warmest congratulations to you! Seriously, it is exactly what the Z has waiting for! It seems to be very fast and responsive, and (important for me) easy to adjust the fonts to make it easy on the eyes on such a small screen.
Unfortunately, I've also hit the same issues as others on this thread regarding access to CF devices. For reference, the cards I've got availale for testing are as follows and I cant get anthing out of any of them. I managed to get yonggun debian working by manually configuring /etc/network/interfaces but nothing seems to work here.
3 wifi cards:
Symbol Spectrum24
Netgear MA701
Ambicom WL1100C
Socket Bluetooth rev F
Planex 10baseT
Plus various sizes of CF memory carsds which I cant seem to mount.
-
Wildherb, I got my Ambicom WL1100C card working by installing wifi-radar from the repository.
Look at this thread, it's kind of messy, but it works for me with hostap. I blacklisted orinoco

Ah, of course! no need for google - the answer was right in front of me if only I had engaged my brain to look for it!
I'll try this tomorrow.
Kind regards.

so far i've tried to make it run in the MD. However, if this can be installed in NAND instead of using the MD as the based system (say like pdaX), the performance should be much better since the loading speed is quite slow - for heavy disk activities are involved on loading from MD).
Please advise whether there is a guideline for that turns to reality. Thx.

Hi. Thanks for working on this great distro for zaurus. :-)
I have properly installed zubuntu kernel and rootfs on my c1000.
Unfortunately, It seems to can't recognize CF devices like wireless lan card and CF memory.
After inserting CF memory card, I typed 'cd /dev' and 'ls'. I looked for device hdx but I couldn't find one.
I want to get my CF device working on c1000.
Thanks for reading this. Happy new year!

That's not necessarily the issue. Angstrom runs off of the MD, but it doesn't take forever to load. I'm guessing it has more to do with Ubuntu being a distro not optimized for disk usage or something instead.

Have you tried running modprobe pxa2xx_cs?
Loading this kernel module should get your CF cards working. Add pxa2xx_cs to the file /etc/modules to automatically load this module on next reboot.

For the C3000 using the latest Spitz kernel pxa2xx_cs is compiled into the kernel already, so you won't have to load it manually. Please insert a CF card and check dmesg | tail to see what's going on

Then I selected it and hit "Run action"
No output in the console
I didn't save this, I want to leave it as is until I can figure out what is wrong.

I renamed /etc/zaurusd/scripts/zaurus-hinge to zaurus-hinge.bak and replaced it with the one attached here and rebooted.
I now get this error:
"selected device is not a touchscreen i understand"
My touchscreen works as it did before. I don't have right click with the stylus, and my USB mouse is reversed. The USB mouse acts like it is in portrait mode. I'm not sure if these two things are related, as most people don't use an externel mouse. I just have been using it to access right and middle clicks.
I didn't get this error this time: "Unable to establish connection with FAM. Do you have "FAM" or "Gamin" installed and running?"
I removed /lib/modules/2.6.26-omegamoon directory.

This is because of the x server version we are using. Unfortunately there is no way to fix it without recompiling either the mouse driver or x server.

Kill tskeys (using top if you want, or just "killall tskeys") before you type startx. will save you loads of time.

tskeys is responsible for the "selected device is not a touchscreen i understand". It tries to use the device used for the offscreen keys (home, mail, contacts etc) which is configured for Akita on default (sorry, my fault). Try to delete the files /etc/zaurusd/mach-config-funcs and /etc/zaurusd/mach-config-vars and reboot. With a bit of luck the message is gone

I just got to install Zubuntu (It's booting now), and have my usual question:
What kernel patches have been applied?
Other stuff:
-The MD5SUM of the Kexec kernel listed on the main page is incorrect (at least for Spitz). The one in the actual download dir is correct, however.
-Is there a way to change the "theme" of the kexec menu? I'm guessing that would take a kernel recompile, but I thought I'd ask.
-Thanks for all of your work! This is really cool!

- Kernel patches from poky repository + Android 1.0 patches
- MD5s are corrected, sorry, very sloppy!
- Theming the kexec menu would mean rebuilding indeed. But there are lots of ideas for making the bootmenu even more advanced, so maybe a little theming could be done
Glad you like it!

Unfortunately, It seems to can't recognize CF devices like wireless lan card and CF memory.
After inserting CF memory card, I typed 'cd /dev' and 'ls'. I looked for device hdx but I couldn't find one.
Have you tried running modprobe pxa2xx_cs?
Loading this kernel module should get your CF cards working. Add pxa2xx_cs to the file /etc/modules to automatically load this module on next reboot.
Thanks! I'll try it.

woohoo, I am up and running. I am using the microdrive on my C3100, to get the multi-boot I had to do this:
1/ put the zubuntu kernel, rootfs desktop tar.gz on the card (calling it android-root.tar.gz), along with the android updater.sh and gnu-tar; booted the OK menu and did the install from scratch, flashing the kernel, wiping the disk and unpacking the tar.gz
2/ replaced the rootfs tar gz with the spitz spitz-root-addition.tar.gz, replaced the zImage with the multiboot zImage, went through OK update, flashed kernel, didn't format disk, did the unpack
now when it powers up it asks me what to boot, it finds the microdrive rootfs, boots and runs!
CF ethernet worked as before, as did wifi (hostap was default, hooray!). I still have the same old dhcp problem as with the previous release :-(
wifi0: unknown hardware address type 801
Can't create addrlist socket
so I've used a static IP.
WEP works fine needing only entries in interfaces file; haven't tried WPA yet but I imagine it will work OK.
Speed seems much much better!
--edit--
screen orientation was already landscape.
no ssh/sshd, installed dropbear, worked first time
created a swapfile as before, added entry to /etc/fstab so it'll start one up at boot
--edit2--
I put, in the interfaces file,
pre-up /sbin/pccardctl resume 1
pre-up /bin/sleep 2
post-down /sbin/pccardctl suspend 1
and it now automagically saves power when wlan is idle.
--edit3--
When I tried "apt-get install kismet" it downloaded stuff, but errored with dpkg: dpkg - error: PATH is not set. Ahah, had to do "export PATH", so I think there's something wrong in the /etc/profiles or something when it sets PATH. Noticed that kismet_ui.conf had the default sound player, installed "bplay" and changed config thus soundplay=/usr/bin/bplay. Sound doesn't appear to work, alsamixer looks OK, sound not muted.
Hmm, mplayer isn't in the repository, although other packages refer to it :-(
Audacious, preinstalled, appears to play an mp3, but I don't hear anything.
-
My initial thoughts/observations:
-dhclient is broken (same problem others have expressed)
-Orinoco/hermes is modprobed by default (I think there's something that can be done with making a list of card IDs or something similar)
-There appear to be some extra Python packages installed, probably left over from WICD's removal
-
Does anybody know how to rebuild the X server (I gather it's in the Xorg sources, but I suspect there's more to it than just "--enable-kdrive")?
I'd like to rebuild it with the XKEYBOARD extension.
Thanks.

I just commented out the whole block, IIRC.
I managed to get Kdrive built, no idea if it has XKB support or not. I'll get to testing it eventually.
The dhclient issue seems to be kernel-related, since when I boot with the 2.6.24-Yonggun kernel it works fine (still get the unknown hardware message, but it works).

OK, thanks, I'll do a completely fresh install with all the latest files and make sure my card is Ext2 at the same time. Will report back later this evening...
Cortez. I've done a fresh install using the spitz tar file in your link an the other files from your blog - I trust that will give me the latest kernel. I've also made sure my SD card is formatted ext2 this time. I still cannot see any CF devices and hence cant even manually configure a network interface. My symptoms are:
no /dev/hdx devices listed at all
no output from pccardctl ident
Here is my dmesg | tail output:

Has anyone mapped the menu key on the clamshell zaurus to zubuntu's menu yet? If so how?
I have tried xbindkeys-config, but it wants a two key combination when making new shortcuts.
-
Using Fluxbox makes it easy. I don't know if there's a way to switch Openbox out for it (I didn't see anything obvious, ln -s should work ), but you could disable the Fluxbox panel and it should act the same (and eliminate the need for xbindkeys).

Just a quick post to say that I'm now up and running with my C3000! Wifi is running just fine and the microdrive is recognised. apt-get seems to work fine. Thanks Cortez and everybody else!

Zubuntu uses LXDE, which is based on Openbox. For instructions on how to change mouse and keyboard mappings in Openbox, see here (http://icculus.org/openbox/index.php/Help:Bindings)

Hi Cortez,
This looks like a promising release but I haven't had any luck with my SL-C860. I went through changing the event2 to event1 for the touchscreen but when startx runs, it opens a window in "portrait" mode but upside-down. I have the zaurus open for the keyboard.
Mouse clicks are far off the mark.
At bootup I get
/usr/sbin/alsactl: load_state:1313: Cannot open /var/lib/alsa/asound.state for reading: No such file or directory
Can't open display :0
/usr/sbin/alsactl: save_state:1251: No soundcards found...
I hope to get it running to see how it does but have only command line for now.

Some progress - I edited .xinitrc and it helped but the mouse is way off. Is there a way to calibrate it?
Thanks!

I do get an error "Extended Input Devices not yet supported. when I abort startx
ts_calibrate does the trick. Now I have to figure out how to configure networking with a symbol technologies card I guess.

the socket/symbol wifi card is soft-mac, so you have to have a firmware uploader for it - spectrum24 chipset IIRC. I think it was posted to this forum a while back, let me know if you don't find it as I can probably dig out a copy (I had one once, but traded up to a prism2-based zonet/mercury zcf1100).

My Socket Low Power Wifi CF works.
Initially, it complaints for fw. I goes to /lib/firmware and find nothing there. As I have Debian installed also, I copy all files from there to Zubuntu's and the interface comes up at eth0. Of course, I have to configure the /etc/network/interface manually beforehand. Now my ugly Pretec (works with both Debian & Zubuntu) can now goes to Akita
I also replaced the internal 16G CF (which replaced the original MD long long time ago) to a Socket bluetooth CF (works when dual-booting to Debian, yet to figure out how to set up a ppp connection with my HTC Touch Pro). If everything goes right, I will have a dual wireless Z

Thanks for the reply. I hope I don't have to update the firmware. It works with Cacko and Angstrom - not sure what is different. I searched and didn't see anything for the firmware so if you have it I could try it. Not sure how I would upgrade it since I have mainly Apples or Linux desktop-wise.
I wasn't getting any response to the card at first but after searching, I ran:
modprobe pxa2xx_cs
Looks like something to do with firmware because I get the message:
spectrum_cs: Cannot find firmwared: symbol_sp24t_prim_fw
spectrum_cs: Firmware download failed
hermes @ c4880000: Timeout waiting for card to reset (reg=0x0000)!
eth0: failed to initialize firmware (err = -110)
spectrum_cs: register_netdev() failed
Thanks!

I don't mean you have to update firmware in your card. I mean you don't have the firmware (driver) in Zubuntu's /lib/firmware. (In fact the rootfs of Zubuntu release doesn't contain the firmware)
I've sent you the files which are from Andromeda Debian in case you don't have. It work for me.
-
Thanks! Got the file and put it onto the SD card. The symbol is now blinking so that probably does it!
Now to wrestle with iwconfig.
Thanks again!

I would like to try Zubuntu on my c860. It has languished for a long time. But do I gather from the above that there are extra files I need to make it work? I have found the following:

But is there anything else I need?
Thanks

Hi. Can you elaborate on what you did to get beyond the rotated screen. I am stuck there.
Thanks
-
Sure thng..
In .xinitrc remove the line that has xrandr in it.
To calibrate your mouse -
In terminal before you do a startx run ts_calibrate as root.
Then when you do a startx everything should be ok.
Good luck!

OK, thanks.
Screen now looks good but ts_calibrate returns an error:
determinent is too small -- 0.000000
Calibration failed
This was run as root before X started. On starting X cursor is 1/2 screen out.
Any ideas?
Also, will there be sound (seeing errors about alsa)?
Cheers
-
OK, thanks. I'll have a go. Where do I find .xinitrc?
In your home directory :
cd
vi .xinitrc

I sorted my screen and cursor on my c860 thanks to this and other threads. Thanks everyone. Zubuntu looks good!
Now I wonder what next? I need to sort out my wifi and would like to know if there is a feed to install applications from if I ever do get networking.
Thanks

yes, but instead of ipkg and other things specific to sharp and angstrom, it's the regular debian package repository arrangement, so type "apt-cache search fred" to search for a package with "fred" in the name, and "apt-get install fred" when you'd found one. "dpkg -l" will list installed packages.
note if you're behind a proxy, do "setenv http_proxy http://myproxy:myport" (http://myproxy:myport") and then you can use the apt- commands no problem.

CL860 suspend issues:
issue 1: suspend happens after no user interaction EVEN if the power suppy IS plugged in.
Is there any way to set the machine to suspend if the unit is battery only powered ?
issue 2: using the metal power button on the side of the unit to resume from suspend wakes the Z for half a second and then resuspends repeatable ad infinitum.
Using the keyboard "home" power button is the only way to wake the zaurus completely.
Otherwise great work! I will be donating as soon as I get some money !

doh ! stupid stupid stupid, of course the Z was not going into suspend mode but simple terminal blanking (screensaver) !
to disable just use [div class=\'codetop\']CODE[/div][div class=\'codemain\' style=\'height:200px;white-space:pre;overflow:auto\']setterm -powersave off -blank 0[/div]

Where can I get 2.6.28 for sl-750 with kexec?
Thank you.

I have a Zaurus C=860.
I put on the first partition of the SD card (which has the first partition as ext2 - I did sudo mke2fs /dev/mmcblk0p1 after creating this partition - and the second partition as linux-swap) the files extracted (i..e. untarred & unzipped using my laptop's Ubuntu Extractor) from the zubuntu-desktop root file system. I then copied the extracted files from the appropriate root-addition archive to the extracted zubuntu-desktop directories on my laptop (i.e. the 3 files from the root-addition /boot directory to the zubuntu-desktop /boot directory and the 2.6.26 directory & its files from the root-addition /lib/modules directory to the zubuntu-desktop /lib/modules directory). I copied the resultant file structure to the SD card's first partition.
I flashed the multiboot kernel OK - using a CF card as I presumed that I wouldn't need to do it again. I got the Omegamoon screen showing the Zubuntu 1.0 distro (as per the instructions). I selected Zubuntu 1.0. The SD card was recognised there was a message 'VFS: Mounted root (ext2 filesystem) readonly' and a message stating 'Freeing init memory 84K). Then there was a message 'Warning: unable to open an initial console' and the Zaurus froze.
Help please!

By the way, people reporting that detection of the NAND partitions takes extremely long during booting, try erasing or re-flashing the NAND, this solves this problem.
Thanks Cortez for all that you have done with zubuntu. It is working well for me.
I tried re-flashing NAND (with the kexec kernel) and still get a long partition detection time. There are several parts to the NAND. Which would I erase if I wanted to shorten the NAND detection time?

I had the same problem with slow probing flash and solved it by installing mtd-utils_1.1.0+git-r1_arm.deb (from "Running Zubuntu from internal flash" blog post) and using command flash_eraseall /dev/mtd2 and /dev/mtd3 (default root and home partitions for Sharp ROM). I don't know if you use those partitions for anything, so take care .

I don't know if you use those partitions for anything, so take care .
Thanks. Reboots in no time.
newbie worry: in looking up flash_eraseall I saw something about maybe including the -j option. I didn't and hope this was ok.

anyone has ever tried to use Planex GW-CF11H ( a prism3 card) on Zubuntu?
Do I need any specific drivers and settings on my C3200?
I'm a newbie and any help would be great :-)

remove /etc/udev/rules.d/70-persistent-net.rules
in /etc/modprobe.d/blacklist
you should have
blacklist orinoco
blacklist orinoco_cs
blacklist hermes
then reboot, if iwconfig outputs an eth0 interface instead of a wlan0 interface
delete those modules: in /lib/modules/2.6.26-omegamoon.../kernel/drivers/net/wireless/orinoco* and then hermes*
and reboot
then iwconfig should return wlan0, if nothing is returned, do a modprobe hostap_cs if module is not present in lsmod
then just add to /etc/network/interfaces
allow-hotplug wlan0
#use this config if WEP
iface wlan0 inet dhcp
wireless_essid ACCESS_POINT_NAME
wireless_mode managed
wireless_key PASSWORD
#use this config if WPA
iface wlan0 inet static
wpa-ssid ACCESS_POINT_NAME
wpa-psk PASSWORD
address 10.0.0.20
netmask 255.255.255.0
gateway 10.0.0.1
use dhcp or static, just merge the configuration that fits you
then
ifdown wlan0
ifup wlan0
i don't know if firmware loads are required, i don't need it, my card fw are:
PRI: 1.1.0
STA: 1.7.4

Thanks same, finally I can get my 3200 wifi on with Zubuntu.
However, I notice it can't get online if the ssid is hidden (not broadcast)...
Anyway, does anyone ever able to get sound on 3100 or 3200?

I'd try redownloading the files and extracting from the command line:
cd sd-mount-point
tar -xvpf zubuntu-tarball.tar.bz2

To get sound going, run alsamixer and unmute all channels. This should do the trick
-
no luck on sound .... i went into alsamixer, and flip everything that listed as mm to the opposite setting.
A restart won't help either... help...... :-(
-
no luck on sound
jeh, run alsamixer as cortez said, then use the right arrow and go to the end, after one hundred column' devices you'll see "Speaker" "column" in my case must be > 90 to hear some sound
-
oh wow, you guys are the best!!!! Thanks, now my zubuntu is fully functioning, woo hoo!

Hi Same
It seems you are able to run pdaxii13 on HD of SL-C3200 and zubuntu on SDHC. This is precisely what I want to do, but I have failed. I got Kernel panic: no init found ...
Can you give some hints on the installation? e.g. what is in your kernel-cmdline? Thanks in advance.
pdaxii13 (akita) on HD SL-C3200.

I unmuted every sound output, turned volume up to max and I get no sound out of the speaker
and then on a hunch, I plugged the headphones in, and guess what! no sound either.

And what applications did you guys use on Zubuntu?

i use xbattbar
added the following command to /root/.xinitrc before the launch of desktop:
xbattbar -a -t 2 -i darkorange -I green -o black -O black -p 15 right > /dev/null &
it paints a 2 pixels bar to the right of the screen, when charging is green, discharging darkorange. it's a small program.

Hey all,
Any chance someone could post the dm9601 module for this kernel?
Thanks,
Canguy

Just been reading the full thread.
Should have done that before asking stupid questions in other threads ...
Sorry,
Having fun with Zubuntu,

Help me!!
I have installed zubuntu 1.0 on my zaurus c-1000. When I insert wifi cf card, my zaurus behaves like "I don't know what this card is.". The card's led doesn't even blink!! (just turned on)
Typing "pccardctl ident" :
Socket 0:
product info: "IPOne", "AirGate2000C", "Version 01.02", ""
manfid: 0x0713, 0x0002
function: 6 (network)
"pccardctl info" :
PRODID_1="IPOne"
PRODID_2="AirGate2000C"
PRODID_3="Version 01.02"
PRODID_4=""
MANFID=0713,0002
FUNCID=6
"pccardctl ls" :
Socket 0 Bridge: [pxa2xx-pcmcia] (bus ID: pxa2xx-pcmcia)
Socket 0 Device 0: [-- no driver -- ] (bus ID: 0.0)
On Yonggun's latest debian kernel and pdaxrom beta1~3, the card worked perfectly.
I think this problem caused by missing of proper driver.
WHAT SHOULD I DO???

WHAT SHOULD I DO???
try sudo modprobe hostap_cs
or the driver that debian use, if the command allows the card to be detected, do a
echo hostap_cs >> /etc/modules to force module load at startup
edit: thnx ofels, fixed the error
-
cat hostap_cs >> /etc/modules to force module load at startup
echo hostap_cs >> /etc/modules to beprecise, not cat.

Thanks for a helpful tip, but still doesn't work. [-- no driver--]
Here is the windows driver of my wifi card. (will be deleted later.)

Here is the windows driver of my wifi card. (will be deleted later.)
(i don't know what to do with the ipone win driver)
anyway, what is the driver used by debian? hostap_cs? pcmcia_cs? any hint?
on the other hand, if you say it works under debian, a quick way would be to use zImage (kernel) and modules from debian, (until someone that uses your card with ubuntu can help you):
[blockquote]- just copy the zImage to /boot/ folder (rename the other to zImage-ubuntu)
- copy the /lib/modules/2.6.24.4-yonngun/ from debian to /lib/modules/ in ubuntu
- then you'll have to change the TSLIB_TSDEVICE="/blablabla/" in .xinitrc or .profile (can't remember), read this, explains how to find the correct ts device: https://www.oesf.org/forum/index.php?s=&...st&p=181584 (https://www.oesf.org/forum/index.php?s=&showtopic=26510&view=findpost&p=181584) (ignore step 4)

On debian the wifi card uses "hostap_cs". By the way, I will try your alternative plan.
-
maybe check "dmesg" first.
What does appear in dmesg after inserting the card ?
Just doing "ifup wlan0" or another interface might be enough to fix the problem.
Chero.

you're right, i assumed those rutine checks as already done, and might not be the case
-
I solved the problem by using debian kernel instead.
I think 'ifup wlan0 (already tried) cannot solve the problem. Checking 'dmesg' will be done later due to my laziness and different kernel which was subsituted before few hours - debian.
Thanks for very kind helps.

I had the same problem on and off for quite some time. So sometimes it worked, but most times it didn't. I finally bought a new card reader, which solved all these problems. So for me it was "just" a shitty reader.

hostap_cs
I went with this module and blacklisted
orinoco
hermes
I did notice that on my /etc/modules file hostap_cs was commented out
#hostap_cs,
so that may have cause me some problems. I am running the RC 1 candidate from cortez omegamoon site with the zubuntu-desktop-jaunty-rootfs_feb.2009-rev-armel on top of that. I tried the RC4 but it froze my cursor and keyboard so went back. This is on Akita.
I have been getting my but kicked for several days and it is nice to relearn a lot of this. I have had wireless network running once but lost it on next boot. The one time it worked after I manually put in the essid and when i looked at iwconfig after something appended a "p" at the end of the essid??? I want to thank cortez and everyone else or I would not have gotten this far.

Got my troublesome wifi card working and running xfce4 atm. Good job on the distro and thanks. It seems to have less broken packages than the present armel of debian too. Kde for instance is not broken.
I switched the mouse key references in xkeybindrc so the fn tap is right click.
No Sound still, all channels are [00] ... all I get from the speakers is a loud buzzing and then when the song stops it stops. This will be a deal breaker for me, like the distro but I dinna have nearly these issues getting sound working in andro debian. Volume is all the way up too, all mixers enabled.
-
Got sound now, not all of them need to be [OO]. Anyhows been testing WM's in zUbuntu.
KDE is now as of version 4.2 WAY to heavy for the Z, very pretty but bogging all the time.
XFCE4 installs well and for the most part performs at a speed where its usable without too many compromises.
IceWm of course the default runs smooth and with the provided themes, is even palatable to the eye.
The usual speed's and issues from Blackbox, Flux and Openbox.
On too test full on Gnome
