How to get more free memory (storage) with a C1000. I have already sym linked most of my soft and fonts and libs, and i reached a maximum of 35MB free in the home partition, how to get more free memory?

PS : all that to try to install Thundirdbird (so X/Qt), after X/QT installed (meanie's site process) i get 25Mo free, but ipkg failed to install it.

Are you confused between RAM and flash space?

/home is flash (or HDD) on your machine if I'm not mistaken.

well, to be honest, i'am not sure how the 128M memory are splited. 64/64 i presume, if the first 64 are for RAM and the other 64 for storage, then where are the rom files? is a part of the storage place is takes by the rom?
for my need, i just would like to free more storage memory, not the 'RAM' sorry..., i will edit my message

You have 128MB flash memory and 64MB Ram.

I think what bolbit is asking is this: Is the flash partitioned? In other words, are user-installed apps put into the same bucket as the ROM's factory apps, or is it divided into two distinct parts, with one for the factory apps and one for user apps?

In the latter case, a custom ROM could probably reduce the amount of space taken up by the factory apps and dedicate more to user storage. (Similar to the 5500's partitioning between storage and RAM but instead between two different storage areas.)

yes, BlackCardinal, that was the idea.
so if i summarise :
- there is 64MB for RAM (this is to say memory used when you lauch the software, like RAM for a PC..)
- 128MB of flash memory (like a hard drive for PC..).
- And as BlackCardinal said, the 128MB flash sould be splitted with 64MB as ROM (ie flash memory only read, let's say like a CDROM) and 64MB for the user (the usable memory (HD)).

And the ROM (preinstalled software by sharp) sould be in a other partition than the usable memory.

I read in this forum that if you remount the 'rom' rw, then you are able to remove some files from the 'rom' but it does not give you more 'usable memory'.
you can move somes files to the rom (rw this time, so no more realy ROM) to free space in the 'usable memory'.

maybe it is so clear, but i think i have undestood a little bit more. thanks.

result : i need to remount the root in rw, remove unused soft, copy other stuff, remount the root ro.

well on the C3100, and I guess it would be similar on the C1000, the 128MB is split into 3 parts: smf, root and home.

root is the read only partition which is 32 MB in size and is where the OS and pre-installed software is.
home is read write of course and is where applications get installed to by default and is 89 MB in size
smf is the partition you get in the emergency boot in single user mode on the command line and gets what is left over in space I guess

Interesting. I thought it would be the same but it looks like they sized the partitions quite differently. No wonder you guys with C1000s run out of space so much quicker. I ran out of space on my C3100 too though it has 32MB more on the /home partition. Though you could squish XQT into your root partition in theory. Are both /root and /home jffs2 partitions? (just in case they made that different too)

it seems , fstab :
/dev/mtdblock2 / jffs2 ...
/dev/mtdblock3 /home jffs2 ...

and at the end your cramfs xqtjumbo :-))
