General Discussion / ROM Comparison?
« on: May 24, 2004, 08:16:44 pm »
a bare-bones ROM would be very useful if we wanted to create our own custom ROM.  In other words, very little ourside the workings of the OS (hardware support and useful software like fdisk, samba, etc.

General Discussion / sl5600 - SD flash keeps going read-only
« on: March 16, 2004, 04:45:13 pm »
I just got off the phone with Sharp\'s Zaurus support.  They told me that they have not recieved any (many?) tech support calls about this problem.  However they did sound highly interested in resolving this issue!

They have asked me to reformat my Lexar SD card and try to get it to work that way.  If (when) that doesn\'t work, they have given me a phone number of a Zaurus \"guru\" at sharp who may be of additional assistance.  If anyone would like to assist me in attempting to resolve this issue, I would greatly appreciate it.

I have a new SL5600.

I\'d like to use the /mnt/card (SD flash) device as general purpose storage,
but whenever I try to use it, it automagically gets set to read-only mode
somehow.  even after I remount it in read-write mode, some other process
forces it back to read-only...
ron

Any further progress made on this problem?  I have a lexar 64MB SD card and am experiencing the same problem.

Has anyone made it back from this problem, or am I eternally screwed?

Angstrom & OpenZaurus / ROM Choices for SL-5600?
« on: March 14, 2004, 01:40:18 am »
brycenut, thank you for your confirmation!

I would like to find a little info on building my own rom.  Does this entail building a new kernel, or is it a bit simpler than that.  BTW, what exactly is a rom anyway?

I have a couple questions about the Zynergy rom for my 5600.

Does it use the Sharp PIM apps?  If so, how can they be replaced?

Will I be limited in the apps I am able to run?  More specifically, will there be a number of apps which will run on the Sharp rom but now the Zynergy rom?

Let me clarify.  Is the vpnc program the only client which works for both 5600 and cisco hardware?

thanks

I have SSH and noMachine.com\'s NX Client installed on mine which seems to work nicely.

Oh yea, what is the NX Client?

I searched for VPN, Octave and Latex and got results for each.  Hopefully that\'ll help.

As far as the rest, I recommend tkcRom.  I\'ve tried all the 5600 rom\'s and it\'s my favorite.  It has SSH installed, as well as a terminal and Opera 6.  You can download a PDF Reader and I\'m not sure about the kb or emacs.

I have SSH and noMachine.com\'s NX Client installed on mine which seems to work nicely.

Thank you for this information.  I have the octave and ssh installed and things seem to be working well.

I am having many problems with the VPN client (VPNC).  It appears to hang after reading my vpnc.conf file.  Is this the only vpn client compatable with cisco vpn?

Hello All,

I have recently purchased a Zaurus 5600, and would like some advice from you Zaurus experts.

I am a researcher, so I spend a lot of time away from the office working on the road or at the library.  Currently, I have a netgear wireless network card that is working well.  I am also using the original ROM which came with my 5600.

My goal is to have the following capabilities:

    1. samba or nfs mounting
    2. ssh
    3. terminal
    4. a good browser
    5. a good pdf reader
    6. keyboard (i\'m leaning toward targus universal wireless keyboard)
    7. emacs
    8. VPN
    9. a better set PIM programs (i am using the default ones that came with my Zaurus)
    10.OCTAVE
    11. LATEX?
    12. suggestions (like a different ROM)?
I want to use this device to do some simple writing/editing of papers, writing of simple scipts to manage experiments, monitoring remote processes which are running on remote workstations, email, and simple web browsing.  Unfortunately, I need a &*&(* VPN client to do nearly all of this.  My University uses a Cisco VPN concentrator.

I thank you all in advance for any help I might receive.

Accessories / Trouble-free wireless network CF cards ... anyone?

I am also using the Netgear MA701 card with the sharp rom and have had nothing but sucess.  I have also noticed the behaviour you describe when trying to use a \"broken\" wifi card.  I like the netgear, and would go so far as to suggest you buy another one...

Currently, I am trying to get vpnc to work on my zaurus 5600.  However, this is proving to be a bit difficult.

Has anyone gotten vpnc to work on a 5600?  If not, does anytone have an alternative vpn client?

I desperately want to have a functioning vpn client on my 5600!

Thank you!
