Gemini PDA - Android / Usability: Save vertical screen space?
« on: December 25, 2018, 06:57:38 pm »
Hi all,

many apps that have a menu and some icons / tabs on top take 1/3 to almost half of the screen height for those elements, leaving only the lower 2/3 or half of the screen for real work (example: Metal app for displaying Facebook content).

Also, in many other apps there are icon bars that are way too large compared to the actual working space in the GUI of those apps (example: Aqua Mail when displaying the list of E-Mails).

Is there a way to reduce the height of such GUI elements to make such apps use the screen real estate in a better way?

Thanks,
Daniel

Gemini PDA - General Discussion / Facebook app doesn't work (Android)
« on: December 04, 2018, 05:32:06 pm »
Hi guys,

when starting the Facebook app on my new Gemini, I only get a white app window with a Facebook logo icon at the top. Nothing else. No login entry fields whatsoever.
Does anyone have an idea what's wrong there?

I tried deleting the app's data and restarting the app, to no avail.

Thanks!

General Discussion / Umid M1
« on: December 20, 2010, 04:07:05 am »
Hi to all M1 users,

I have a UMID M1 with 32GB and HSDPA which has a keyboard problem.
In the pocketables forum, noone can help.
Maybe someone here is able to help?

The problem:
The keyboard controller is not working properly.
When typing quickly, i.e. when sometimes a key is pressed while the previous ke has not been released yet, the keyboard controller generates additional unwanted key codes.

E.g. when typing "sudo" quickly, I get "suyadois". this is an extreme example.
Mostly, two keys which are side-by-side generate a third key code of a key which is also directly besides the two pressed keys. E.g. "er" generates "erw", "io" generates "iou" etc.
This is very annoying.

This happens in Linux as well as in Windows. There does not seem to be a dependencce on the EC controller firmware version. version M.31 and M.30 both do not solve the problem.

In the pocketables forum thread, we have collected quite some facts about the problem, but no solution yet.
Any hint is much appreciated!

Thank you!

Yes, that's the old discussion...
I definitely fall into the category prefering mature software over new software.
dhns put it correctly in my opinion:
Having a mature kernel eliminates the need for long periods of testing, and as we saw with the Zaurus project: Once the basic system finally is quite stable and feature-rich enough to make the device really useful, the manufacturer stops making the device.

So I really like the approach of this phone here.

OTOH, a smartphone without a QWERTY keyboard is not really useful for me.
I have one now, a T-Mobile SDA running Windows Mobile.
It replaces the zaurus now in some aspects, but it is a pain.
Text can only be entered using the phone numeric keyboard and using T9.
Text entry via touchscreen, as this new phone features, makes it a bit easier, but this would not be enough for real work for me.
I need to maintain databases, enter a lot of text (writing notes / diaries / web pages / papers...) and all this should be as compatible as possible to my Windows PC at work an my mac at home.
I admit this is not an easy profile to meet with a Linux smartphone. ;-)

But, as someone else said, I only need Linux on a phone if I can really make use of the flexibility, i.e. if this is my always-with-me mini PC. If I only use it as a phone, and carry a seperate "Mini-PC" with me, I don't need Linux on that phone.

Well, my 2 cents. As always, YMMV.

Nonetheless, a very interesting phone which could be einteresting for special projects and for some (!) private users.

In order to sell 1000 of then, though, I think you will need to find a larger company using this phone for a project.

Or maybe, with good advertising, this can be made a new standard phone for companies with field staff, which must communicate with each other a lot and sync with intranet servers etc...
Like the comany I work for.
Having different systems when sitting at the customer's plant makes it difficult for us to share information and PIMs.

If we all had one kind of flexible phone, which is able to sync with the Intranet server (Lotus Domino / Notes), and which allows to enter information easily and quickly (keyboard...) etc., then we all would be much happier.
Maybe we should discuss that offline ;-)

Software / Is Kde Pim/pi Dead?
« on: April 09, 2008, 05:26:20 am »
Hello Lutz,

what a surprise to hear from you! It's great to see that KDEPIM/PI is still - well - maintained (if not "actively under development" anymore).
The vanishing of pi-sync.net and the fact that version 2.2.7 now is almost 3 years old suggested that you dropped the project entirely.

How about the sync features?
As far as I understood, you intended to make KDEPIM/PI compatible with a lot of sync partners, also using SyncML, and also with Outlook.
Any plans for KO/PI Outlook sync under Windows?

I must admit I have switched to outlook and Windows Smartphone for the PIM stuff now, this is necessary for me for my work, and I actually hate it.  OTOH I don't want to maintain more than one calendar / todo list etc., so I switched away from KO/PI, although I really, really liked it (as you know :-).
Having outlook sync would again allow useds like me to use KO/PI while not having to maintain different calendars.

And thanks for 2.2.9! Will anyone compile it for pdaXrom? :-)

Thanks

For Sale / Wanted / Who Wants Sl-c3000 With Built-in Bluetooth?
« on: April 01, 2008, 09:55:40 am »
Hello,

I have one Zaurus device here which is a bit special:

It is an SL-C3000, which has a Bluetooth module built-in, connected internally to the USB port, so the USB port is non-functional for other connections, but the machine has Bluetooth functionality. From the outside, this modification is not visible (well, right now there are some wires leading to the outside to a hardware switch to enable / disable the module, but I could cut the wires and switch, it doesn't work to enable the USB port for other connections anyway).

This SL-C3000 resides in the case of an SL-C3200 (the silver shell, instead of white).

Currently, the device has pdaXii13 installed.

It is in very good condition.

Anyone interested?
Please make a reasonable offer (PM)

I would expect something like 300 Euro for it. Plus shipping from Germany.

For Sale / Wanted / Fs: Sl-c3200, Socket Bluetooth Cf And Cfxga Card!
« on: March 17, 2008, 11:31:51 am »
Just to let you know:
The Zaurus is still available, as well as the CFXGA card.

I lower the price of the Zaurus now to 330 Euro

The CFXGA card is down to 100 Euro.

I can throw in a WLAN card for the Zaurus for 35 Euro.
It is a taiwanese noname card but it is much more robust than the DLink cards and works flawlessly.

Next weekend I will lis tthe items on ebay, unless someone buys them here.

Software / Is Kde Pim/pi Dead?
« on: March 17, 2008, 11:28:29 am »
I had some contact with the author, zautrix, a.k.a. Lutz Rogoswki, shortly before he stopped the development. I have discussed many ideas for improvements and also some bugs with him, and he announced new versions, even with better Outlook sync capabilitities. Unfortunately, something made him stop the further development. There must be some new code for Outlook sync in his hands, but he never released it :-(

So my point of view is that developemnt is dead currently.

But hey, it is open source, so everyone is entitled to improve the programs!

Hi guys,

I'm selling an SL-C3200 in very good condition (only few signs of usage).

did you buy another geek device?

Not yet (I have three more Zauri).
But i will definitely have a look into the eeePC hype, maybe not now but only when the new generation with bigger screen comes.

For Sale / Wanted / Fs: Sl-c3200, Socket Bluetooth Cf And Cfxga Card!
« on: March 07, 2008, 05:16:09 pm »
Hi guys,

I'm selling an SL-C3200 in very good condition (only few signs of usage).
[blockquote]It has had  a screen protector from day 1.
It comes with the usual accessories, has the CE certificate (for EU - it has been bought from Trisoft IIRC), plus some extras, see picture:
- an original Sharp EA-70s AC adapter (on request I can exchange it for an US ro Japanese adapter)
- an additional European AC adapter, smaller and lighter than the original
- a small mouse
- a spare stylus

USB client and host cables, as well as unused ear phones, and the three CD-ROMs are included.
The Zaurus comes with Trisoft's ROM preinstalled (sorry, pictures show weeXpc instead, but that's not preinstalled!).
Asking 350 Euro for the package.
[/blockquote]

THIS ITEM IS SOLD:
Also, I am selling a CF Bluetooth card made by Socket.
[blockquote]I think it's Rev.E (according to the label, see pictures).
It does not stick out of the Zaurus when inserted, so it is very convenient to always leave it in the slot.
It works flawlessly with pdaXrom, weeXpc, and AFAIK also OpenZaurus / Angstrom. Not sure about Sharp and Cacko ROM. But you can find info about compatibility in this forum.

I am asking 23 Euro for the card.
[/blockquote]

Last but not least I decided to part with my IODATA CFXGA card.
[blockquote]This is a quite rare card for VGA output. There are programs to mirror the Zaurus' screen on an external monitor or projector, and the "Presenter" application coming with Sharp / Cacko ROM has a direct way of controlling the card, so you can use the remote control to switch between slides. Very convenient. The "Presenter" application is stable, but I had problems using the screen mirroring software.

This card was expensive. I think I paid 150 or 200 Euro for it. It has not been used often. I will let it go for 120 Euro now.[/blockquote]

If someone wants to buy all three items at once, the Bluetooth CF card is free.

I may put the items on ebay soon if noone buys them here.

Shipping costs are additional. I can ship worldwide, but please consider the additional insurance, import tax and customs costs.
Shipping within Germany is 4,00 Euro (Hermes).
Shipping within EU is 15,00 Euro (Hermes).
For other shipping fees please ask.

Software / Ka/pi Address Book Migration To Outlook 2003
« on: January 18, 2008, 08:24:00 am »
Hello,

what is the easiest and safest way to migrate KA/PI address book data to Outlook 2003?

I have tried CSV export from KA/PI, heavily modified the resulting file in a text editor removing newlines from notes etc., then imported into Excel, saved as Excel sheet, then tried to import the Excel file into Outlook. The last step crashes Outlook!

When I export another CSV from Excel and try to import the CSV into Outlook, the fields are not recognized. All data is redognized to be in the first column (as if one opens a CSV file in Excel via the "file open" menu instead of "Data / Import"...

Is there another way?

I have 450 contacts in my database and have used a lot of the more common fields (home/work addres/phone, company/role information, birthday etc.

Is synchronizing via Sharp DTM safe (i.e. can I be sure that no data is lost or assigned to Outlook fields in a wrong way)?

Thanks a lot

Daniel

C1000/3x00 Hardware / C3100 Dead... :(
« on: January 14, 2008, 04:06:18 am »
Well, there is also the Fn-D-M key combination instead of D+M. This is a backup copy of the diagnostic menu, IIRC.
It has helped me out once when nothing else, including D+M, worked.

Good luck!

General Discussion / Hinge

IIRC, it was mentioned that if you twist the Z's screen 90 degrees and tighten the screws normally hidden by the screen, the issue should be fixed.

Be careful!
I have tried that, too, and somehow the screws can be twisted and twisted and never reach a stop.
And for me, this didn't fasten the hinge.

Any other experiences?
