Gemini PDA - Android / Usability: Save vertical screen space?
« on: December 25, 2018, 06:57:38 pm »
Hi all,

many apps that have a menu and some icons / tabs on top take 1/3 to almost half of the screen height for those elements, leaving only the lower 2/3 or half of the screen for real work (example: Metal app for displaying Facebook content).

Also, in many other apps there are icon bars that are way too large compared to the actual working space in the GUI of those apps (example: Aqua Mail when displaying the list of E-Mails).

Is there a way to reduce the height of such GUI elements to make such apps use the screen real estate in a better way?

Thanks,
Daniel

Gemini PDA - General Discussion / Facebook app doesn't work (Android)
« on: December 04, 2018, 05:32:06 pm »
Hi guys,

when starting the Facebook app on my new Gemini, I only get a white app window with a Facebook logo icon at the top. Nothing else. No login entry fields whatsoever.
Does anyone have an idea what's wrong there?

I tried deleting the app's data and restarting the app, to no avail.

Thanks!

For Sale / Wanted / Who Wants Sl-c3000 With Built-in Bluetooth?
« on: April 01, 2008, 09:55:40 am »
Hello,

I have one Zaurus device here which is a bit special:

It is an SL-C3000, which has a Bluetooth module built-in, connected internally to the USB port, so the USB port is non-functional for other connections, but the machine has Bluetooth functionality. From the outside, this modification is not visible (well, right now there are some wires leading to the outside to a hardware switch to enable / disable the module, but I could cut the wires and switch, it doesn't work to enable the USB port for other connections anyway).

This SL-C3000 resides in the case of an SL-C3200 (the silver shell, instead of white).

Currently, the device has pdaXii13 installed.

It is in very good condition.

Anyone interested?
Please make a reasonable offer (PM)

I would expect something like 300 Euro for it. Plus shipping from Germany.

For Sale / Wanted / Fs: Sl-c3200, Socket Bluetooth Cf And Cfxga Card!
« on: March 07, 2008, 05:16:09 pm »
Hi guys,

I'm selling an SL-C3200 in very good condition (only few signs of usage).
[blockquote]It has had  a screen protector from day 1.
It comes with the usual accessories, has the CE certificate (for EU - it has been bought from Trisoft IIRC), plus some extras, see picture:
- an original Sharp EA-70s AC adapter (on request I can exchange it for an US ro Japanese adapter)
- an additional European AC adapter, smaller and lighter than the original
- a small mouse
- a spare stylus

USB client and host cables, as well as unused ear phones, and the three CD-ROMs are included.
The Zaurus comes with Trisoft's ROM preinstalled (sorry, pictures show weeXpc instead, but that's not preinstalled!).
Asking 350 Euro for the package.
[/blockquote]

THIS ITEM IS SOLD:
Also, I am selling a CF Bluetooth card made by Socket.
[blockquote]I think it's Rev.E (according to the label, see pictures).
It does not stick out of the Zaurus when inserted, so it is very convenient to always leave it in the slot.
It works flawlessly with pdaXrom, weeXpc, and AFAIK also OpenZaurus / Angstrom. Not sure about Sharp and Cacko ROM. But you can find info about compatibility in this forum.

I am asking 23 Euro for the card.
[/blockquote]

Last but not least I decided to part with my IODATA CFXGA card.
[blockquote]This is a quite rare card for VGA output. There are programs to mirror the Zaurus' screen on an external monitor or projector, and the "Presenter" application coming with Sharp / Cacko ROM has a direct way of controlling the card, so you can use the remote control to switch between slides. Very convenient. The "Presenter" application is stable, but I had problems using the screen mirroring software.

This card was expensive. I think I paid 150 or 200 Euro for it. It has not been used often. I will let it go for 120 Euro now.[/blockquote]

If someone wants to buy all three items at once, the Bluetooth CF card is free.

I may put the items on ebay soon if noone buys them here.

Shipping costs are additional. I can ship worldwide, but please consider the additional insurance, import tax and customs costs.
Shipping within Germany is 4,00 Euro (Hermes).
Shipping within EU is 15,00 Euro (Hermes).
For other shipping fees please ask.

Software / Ka/pi Address Book Migration To Outlook 2003
« on: January 18, 2008, 08:24:00 am »
Hello,

what is the easiest and safest way to migrate KA/PI address book data to Outlook 2003?

I have tried CSV export from KA/PI, heavily modified the resulting file in a text editor removing newlines from notes etc., then imported into Excel, saved as Excel sheet, then tried to import the Excel file into Outlook. The last step crashes Outlook!

When I export another CSV from Excel and try to import the CSV into Outlook, the fields are not recognized. All data is redognized to be in the first column (as if one opens a CSV file in Excel via the "file open" menu instead of "Data / Import"...

Is there another way?

I have 450 contacts in my database and have used a lot of the more common fields (home/work addres/phone, company/role information, birthday etc.

Is synchronizing via Sharp DTM safe (i.e. can I be sure that no data is lost or assigned to Outlook fields in a wrong way)?

Thanks a lot

Software / Sfdisk Partitioning Question
« on: October 30, 2007, 09:13:50 am »
Hello,

I need to partition SD cards from a shell script using sfdisk, but don't know how to to that in a safe way.

No matter what the size of the SD card is, I would like to create a 128MB SWAP partition at the END of the card (i.e. as the second partition /dev/mmcda2) and the remaining space at the beginning (/dev/mmcda1) needs to be linux ext2.

I have used something like

Code: [Select]
sfdisk /dev/mmcda -uM << EOF
,128,S,
,,L,*
;
EOF

in order to achieve the opposite, i.e. 128MB swap as partition 1 and Linux ext2 as parition 2.

Any idea how to use sfdisk to achieve what I really need?
Thanks a lot!

Accessories / 4gb "sd" Cards On Ebay
« on: July 08, 2007, 04:01:38 pm »
Hi guys,

on ebay I see a lot 4GB "SD" cards listed. They don't mention SDHC, nor do the images show SDHC logos on the listed cards.
Use the ebay search form and enter
SD 4GB -SDHC

Are these really non-SDHC cards?
Any experiences if they are compatible with the Zaurus' enhanced SD drivers (pdaXrom/Cacko)?

Thanks

Zaurus - pdaXrom / "latest" Zgcc By Meanie Incompatible With Beta3?
« on: July 04, 2007, 06:18:05 am »
Hi huys, esp. Meanie,

some day ago, I downloaded the "latest" zgcc image by Meanie and compiled GTK apps for beta3.
However, these apps crashed often when calling gnome_vfs_shutdown() or various GTK dialog functions.

Recompiling with an older zgcc by Meanie created intact binaries.

Any ideas why that is?
Can't I use newer zgcc images anymore for beta3?

Thanks

Zaurus - pdaXrom / Problems With Samba From Mac
« on: June 19, 2007, 06:41:14 am »
Hi guys,

when mounting a Samba share on my Mac, I sometimes (not always) have problems shen copying something over to the Zaurus.
The Mac complains about not having enough free space on the target.
But there IS enought space.
Also, when this problem appears, it doesn't go away, even after deleting files on the zaurus so that there is additional free space.

Sometimes it just works, though.

Any idea, what the reason could be?

Thanks a lot

General Discussion / Gtd With Ko/pi
« on: June 15, 2007, 08:35:09 am »
Hi guys,

I know about the articlehttp://www.kunstmusik.com/2006/08/25/gtd-with-korganizerpi
which describes an approach to use Paul Allen's "Getting things done" paradigm with KO/PI.
However, that approach is not entirely what I need, because it disregards the, IMHO very important, bucket approach of GTD.

Actually, GTD speaks about "buckets" (context lists for actions), categorized by situations, e.g. one list for telephone calls, one for Internet recherche actions, one for things to be one at the office, one for things to be done in the home garage, one to be done in the car or when driving around etc. etc.
I think this is a very good system. Having heard of it a year ago, I only learned the details today, and now I want to change my time management system according to GTD.

This it what I have planed (not entirely identical to the method outlined in the articel above):

If I create trees of todos (hierarchical structures of sub-todos), one tree should be one project, the sub-todos being the actions of the project.
The actions of that project, however, must go into different "buckets", dependent on the situation in which they can be acoomplished.
For the buckets I wanted to use KO/PI's categories ("GTD-Telephone", "GTD-Internet", "GTD-Home", "GTD-Office", ...)
So, when writing down the actions for a project, I write them down as sub-todos for one parent-todo (the project), and apply the categories according to where / in what situation I can accomplish the todos.
E.g. if I enter the action "Look up tax tables on Internet" for the project "Taxes", I will put it into the category or bucket "GTD-Internet".

Then I can use a filter in order to see all todos from all projects which can be done in the current situation.
E.g. if I sit in front of the computer, I can activate the filter "GTD-Internet" and KO/PI shows me all todos from all projects which I have thrown into the "GTD-Internet" bucket, i.e. all actions which can be done using the intenet.

KO/PI seems indeed to be a very good tool for it, having only one problem:
If I have a parent-todo of category "GTD-Project" and that has a sub-todo with category "GTD-Internet", activating the filter "GTD-Project" only shows the parents. That's OK. But when activating the filter "GTD-Internet", the "GTD-Internet"-Sub-Todos are NOT shown, because their parents do not belong to that category.
So a work-around (tested) would be to apply all "GTD-*" categories to the parents, but that means a lot of maintenance work when adding a GTD "bucket" or when creating a new project.

So the key question is:
Does anyone know of a solution to make sub-todos show up in filters which their parents do not apply to?

Or from the other point of view:
Does anyone know of a bucket-based GTD approach realizable with KO/PI?

Thanks a lot

Zaurus - pdaXrom / Crashing Battery Applet
« on: June 14, 2007, 03:06:25 am »
Hi guys,

in beta3, the battery applet crashes from time to time and has to be restarted.
Do we know the reasons for that?
Any workarounds?

I didn't find out when this happens.
It seems as if it only happens if the Zaurus has been suspended before. But it could also be a matter of (up)time.

Zaurus - pdaXrom / Fsck.vfat Fails On Hard Drive
« on: April 23, 2007, 07:00:53 am »
Hi guys,

on my SL-C3200 with a 3GB third partition (FAT 32), fsck.vfat fails:

Code: [Select]
root@˜>fsck.vfat /dev/hda3
disfsck 2.11, 12 Mar 2005, FAT32, LFN
Seek to -1279934976:Invalid argument

Does anyone know this symptom?
I have observed it on three different SL-C3200 with slightly different partitioning (hda3 sizes 3GB and 4GB)
fsck.vfat works fine on flash cards.

Thanks

Zaurus - pdaXrom / Wpa Settings Integration Into Lan&wifi Config
« on: April 19, 2007, 12:28:18 pm »
Hi guys,

I began to integrate WPA settings into the /usr/bin/network.py (LAN&WiFi settings) of pdaXrom 1.1.0beta3.

Since my Python knowledge is very limited, I have a working version, but it needs some tweaking.

What I have done so far is:
- Enhanced network.py by the necessary input fields for WPA settings,
- Write these WPA settings to the config file ~/Choices/network.cfg
- Read settings from ~/Choices/network.cfg when starting network.py and selecting a WPA-enabled scheme
- add "WPA=y" to the corresponding /etc/pcmcia/wireless.opts section when WPA is enabled
- Call wpa_passphrase "your SSID name" "your passphrase" > /etc/wpa_supplicant.conf
when hitting "OK" after configuring WPA, so that the wpa_supplicant config file is created.

So this version should be able to correctly create everything which is necessary for a WPA-enabled WiFi connection.

However, there are some problems:

1. When reading the settings from ~/Choices/network.cfg I get an error in line 553 of the script and the stored value of the wpakey_type is not read in correctly, resulting in an empty combobox field. Not a serious problem, but annoying. Don't know the reason due to limited Python knowledge.

2. Generation of the /etc/wpa-supplicant.conf file as it is now allows for only one WPA-enabled scheme (or more schemes sharing the same WPA settings).
How is it handled to have more PCMCIA / network schemes with different WPA settings? That's not primarily a problem of the python script, but rather a conceptual problem... except there is a syntax in wpa_supplicant.conf file which allows for this which I don't know yet.
Is it possible to simply append other network={} sections with different SSIDs to the file?

3. The input dialog size is a bit large when "wireless" is chosen (i.e. when the wireless tab is enabled). This is due to the additional input fields.
There is still some room for optimization (e.g. don't stack the checkboxes for "any ESSID" and "Power management", but put them side by side). but due to my limited Python knowledge I don't know how to do that.

I have NO experience with WPA so far and almost no experience with Python.
So don't consider this a professional approach please

Also, I haven't tested the enhancement yet. Will do so on the weekend when I have time to set up WPA at my office. I think it should work because I designed the improvement to meet the instructions for WPA on the Tyrannozaurus Cacko website (search for "WPA")

Please find the new python script attached. Remove .txt extension before executing.

Any hints for improvements are appreciated!
I hope we will soon have a fully working WPA-enabled LAN & WiFi config GUI.

Thanks

Zaurus - pdaXrom / Processes Started "high Priority"
« on: April 17, 2007, 04:52:17 am »
Hi guys.

I have observed that sometimes the overall system performance of pdaXrom 1.1.0beta3 is not optimal.
For example when pressing the "Menu" button, it takes some seconds until the menu comes up.

Now I know why this is:

On some boots, processes are started "high-priority" -- according to PS output description the "<" which I then see in the "ps" output means that these processes are "not nice" to other users.

In most cases it is enough to reboot and have the normal priority for these processes again.

Any idea why on some bootups these processes are started high-priority and how to avoid that?

Below is the output of "ps ax" on my Zaurus. once with the high-prio processes which cause the lower performance (with the "<" in the ps output) and once without that, taken after a reboot.
It seems that in the bad case everything which runs under or after "X" and including "X" is started high-prio, while in the good case only "X" is started with high priority. But why??

Thanks

daniel
