Has anybody ever encountered the distinct odor of burning electonics whilst playing MP3s off of a CF card? I was playing MP3s on my 5500 and it gives off this incredible burning odor.
I have two CF cards from my digital camera that I was borrowing to use in my Z to play MP3s. Both produced the same odor. It didn\'t seem to occur when playing MP3s from RAM or an SD card (although I did not do any rigorous testing).
Any thoughts? I just bought it 2 weeks ago, so I think I will send it back for another just to be safe.

Electronics work by capturing the smoke at the factory 8) . Anytime you use an electronic gadget and smell or see smoke, you have let the smoke out and broken it  . Since you just smelled smoke and didn\'t see any, I think you just have a small leak and haven\'t lost all the smoke yet. Just to be on the safe side, I would send it back immediately.
Hope this lecture on the basics of electronics manufacturing was helpful .

I can think of two possible reasons that might have joined the forces to drive you nuts. One is that the cards got dirty, so you don\'t have clean contact with the pins. That could provide some resistance to the electrons and might cause heating if you use a lot of I/O. The other might be that you bought noname CF cards that have been manufactured using low-quality plastics, so it isn\'t heat resistant enough. If you smell smoke only when you play MP3 files, that might be extra heat produced by your hard working CPU. You didn\'t overclock it, did you?
Oh, on the other side, there might be another reason for that. It might be that you\'re using pirated MP3 files to listen to the music you didn\'t pay for, and the smell is the reminder to stop doing it unless you want to spend eternity in one hot, smelly and smoky place!
P.S. ... listening to Milly Vannily.

You didn\'t soak the card thouroughly with any soda or other liquids before you inserted the card, did you? I\'ve found that that doesn\'t work out too well. Appearantly those cards don\'t like soda as much as I do.

maybe ugly dust in the connection part of your card??? or on the Z?

I know we are all making jokes, but I\'d freak if that was me, it don\'t sound good at all.
Must be the music, play some Bob Marley, chill it down. Try some Michael Jackson stuff, if the card ejects itself and starts running down the road screaming, it\'s the card. :-) Or maybe the Z has developed a sense of taste!! LOL!!!!
