Now that I've got X/Qt & Debian running OK, I'm trying to get IceWM under control...
1) Right now IceWM works, but looks lousy, white on white...
When I select other themes from the pop-up menu list, it takes a minute for the screen to
refresh, but it comes back the same way it was, no change.
I've checked on the IceWM website and there's some apps out there like IceWMControlPanel
that has some nice GUI controls to changing themes, etc.
When I tried to install IceWMControlPanel, it says that I need PyGtk2. Anyone know if this is available and would work on the C3000?
Or other suggestion for managing themes in IceWM?
2) Are other WM's like Fluxbox, xfce4 better than IceWM to use on Zaurus?
Easy to manage themes and other preferences?

Managed to get PyGtk2, thanks to ellomea in the Python forum.
Now I get the following error messages when I try to install IceWMControlPanel:

i just apt-get install icewm-themes and now i've an entry called "themes" in the IceWM start menu; so now i can swith themes from there.
you can also try to apt-get install iceconf
it's a graphical IceWM configuration tool

Could you please explain how you change your iceWM theme?
When I try to change it from the IceWM start menu, I select one of the themes from the list, the screen goes blank for a bit and then I see the same theme as before, NO change.
When I try to change in the iceconf app, browse, I couldn't seem to locate any theme files to select from.

Is there an easy way of moving the icewm menu bar from the bottom of the screen to the top or do i need to install iceconf?

ArchiMax, it sounds as though you're doing everything correctly in terms of changing theme. It should just be a matter of selecting the theme and it being applied. I personally use IceWM with pocketworkstation's debian image (using fbvnc) on a c3000 without any problems; perhaps there's something odd about the version you installed?
Meanie, you can just set the value "TaskBarAtTop = 1" in ~/.icewm/preferences. You can change any setting within IceWM without a separate configuration program, they just make it much simpler than having to look up the relevant keywords to set.

I looked in this directory and nothing is in it.

Unfortunately or fortunately, depending upon how you look at it...
I just installed the new Cacko v1.23b1 for the C3000....couldn't resist after
waiting so long....works great! Only bad thing is that it erased everything on the
microdrive....
So guess I have to reinstall X/Qt/Debian again......
Oh well....maybe it will be better this time...

I use fluxbox and configured .xmodmaprc and fluxbox hot keys for maximum performance for laptop as well as pda mode.
IMHO fluxbox is lighter and allows much better options for pda mode operation.
If someone wants I could upload the .xmodmaprc, ~/.fluxbox/keys and a simple rotate script I use in my debian setup.

Thanks meanie, but I looked there already. Maybe my eyes are bad, but what I see when I go to the download page is actually the 'glib-additional_1.2.10-2_arm.ipk' file not the 'glib_1.2.10-0v13_arm.ipk' file.
Meanwhile, would like to clarify two more things in your install instructions, please...
1) You mention that you can use the 'xqt-debian-scripts_0.1_arm.ipk' file. Do you install this AND the other 'xqt-startup-scripts_0.0.3_all.ipk' file too. Or just one of them? I do want to install Debian...

OK, deinstalled and reinstalled again (for the 5th time today....) and still no go....even with the latest info from Meanie....
When I click on StartX icon it just crashes....
Tried opening it in Console...and get the following messages:
/opt/QtPalmtop/bin/Xqt: error while loading shared libraries: libfreetype.so.6:
cannot load shared object file: No such file or directory
xinit: No such file or directory (errno 2): Unable to connect to X server
xinit: No such process (errno 3): Server errror.
Any suggestions?????

OK, deinstalled and reinstalled again (for the 5th time today....) and still no go....even with the latest info from Meanie....

This means that it is missing the freetype [freetype_2.1.5-1_arm.ipk] package. Try installing it and see if it works. Strangely, I did not have to install that package to run Debian and Firefox ( but it is needed for Minimo)

OK, installed freetype. Now, here's what happens:
A) If I click on 'StartX' icon, it doesn't open, just see that crash graphic on icon.
If I use Konsole, and type at prompt 'startx', I now get the following messages, but X does open up:

Does the locale error relate to not installing one of the locale files (included in other install instructions, but not Meanie's) ??
Again, I in option 'B' above, I did get X to open and if do 'fullscreen' I see what I think is the top of the rxvt window at the bottom of the display. At least I think it's just the top as I only see the title bar of the window, the rest of the display has that B&W grid look on it.

well, you had it working before. leave blackbox in there. it is what is keeping x running, if you remove it, x will just finish. by default blackbox provides a very bare minimum taskbar at the bottom which is what you saw before. if you want something fancy, replace it with flushbox or fvwm, etc... or just use debian's icewm.
if you want to get rid of the locale errors, just install the eucjp locale

well, you had it working before. leave blackbox in there. it is what is keeping x running, if you remove it, x will just finish. by default blackbox provides a very bare minimum taskbar at the bottom which is what you saw before. if you want something fancy, replace it with flushbox or fvwm, etc... or just use debian's icewm.

ArchiMark, if you followed the PocketWorkstation/XQT instructions on the debian Wiki you are running as root. The startup script calls su -c to issue the chroot, this leaves you logged in as root whilst the environment is running.
For some reason though, the environment still seems to have the idea that the ~ path is /home/zaurus and the instructions assume that your home is /home/root (as in the passwd file).
If you get back to where you were then issue the following command from a terminal window (from the Debian environment)...
ln -s /root /home/zaurus
Then try setting your theme. Themes are not being saved in your example because the theme manager couldn't find your home path to save the settings.

Actually I think I have found the better answer (if you have sudo installed, as you would with Cacko3K).
In the Qtopia envonment /home/zaurus/.xinitrc should contain...

Also if you are having keymap problems then one thing that's going to get in the way is KeyHelper, for some reason it works well now with standard XQT but as soon as you go debian it fails.
To avoid this issue if you have KeyHelper installed (or are using Cacko3K and it's built in) edit your /opt/QtPalmtop/bin/startx file add at the top...
khctl disable
and at the bottom...
khctl enable
Finally you probably want to create your .xmodmaprc in /home/zaurus (in the Qtopia environment) that looks like this...
keycode 69 = comma slash
keycode 70 = period question
keycode 142 = braceleft
keycode 143 = braceright
keycode 22 = minus grave
This will get the the comma, slash, period and question marks available.
Fn + O = {
Fn + P = }
Shift + - = `

When I try to do that I get:

So it looks like '/usr/sbin' is in my path right??
I checked that directory and don't see 'visudo' in there...

Turns out that somehow, I installed an earlier version of sudo by mistake...
After installing the later version, I was able to use visudo!
Edited sudoers file and Debian opened up OK....

Good to see that you got it working! I am currently trying to revamp some parts of my website, in particular the X/Qt section to make it a bit clearer. Hopefully I will be done before the weekend because then I'll be off to New Zealand again and not be online.

Good to see that you got it working! I am currently trying to revamp some parts of my website, in particular the X/Qt section to make it a bit clearer. Hopefully I will be done before the weekend because then I'll be off to New Zealand again and not be online.

zaurus ALL=(ALL) NOPASSWD: /sbin/ifconfig, /sbin/dhcpcd, /usr/bin/apache, /sbin/chroot, /bin/mount, /sbin/swapon
(per meanie's website)
When I enter # visudo in the console I get:
# subdoers file.
#
#This file MUST be edited with the 'visudo' command as root.
#
#See the subdoers man page for the details on how to write a subdoers file.
#
#Host alias specification
#User alias specification
#Cmnd alias specification
#user privilege specification
root ALL=(ALL) ALL
"/etc/subdoers.tmp" 15 lines, 294 chars
(this last part is highlighted and I am not able to input anything)

visudo is a shell for editing /etc/sudoers using vi, so it works exactly like vi. do a google on vi tutorials if you don't know how to use vi. I am a vi fan, so I will not be suggesting you to use any other editors
