Title: WarCraft on the Zaurus (640x480)? "FreeCraft" or &
Post by: TonyOlsen on May 05, 2004, 06:03:30 pm
Did I get your attention?   There are opensource movements to get a WarCraft II clone.  (I wasn\'t sure which forum to put this in)

This thread is for discussing that.  It is a break-off from the http://www.zaurususergroup.com/index.php?n...er=asc&start=15 (https://www.oesf.org/forums/index.php?showtopic=3559&postdays=0&postorder=asc&start=15) thread.

Here\'s the last comment I made in that thread.

Anyone want to try recompiling FreeCraft (now known as Stratagus) for the Zaurus?

http://pingus.seul.org/~grumbel/tmp/wargus/ (http://pingus.seul.org/~grumbel/tmp/wargus/)

etc..

Also:

http://sourceforge.net/search/ (http://sourceforge.net/search/) (search for \"stratagus\")

This is the open-source version of \"War Craft II\". Anyone else drooling over the idea of having War Craft II (rated the best computer games for a number of years) on their Zaurus?

Hey Tony,

I will be very interested in trying to get emulators running, along with many games once i get my c860. Unfortunately it seems to have been lost by USPS on its way over to Ireland.

I like the idea of getting many full games running. Have you checked out ScummVM?

Would it be at all feasible to try and get the original command & conquer to run on one of these emulators? I\'m going to look now to see if anyone has make a port or an open source equivalent. TonyOlsen,  what machine and os are you running?

I installed it, but the installation says it needs some additional libraries, and it didn\'t run when I tried to open it (the screen switched to 240x320 mode and said something like \"Please Wait...\" and then, a few seconds later, switch back to the 640x480 screen).  This has happened before with other applications when I fail to install a needed library... but I haven\'t had time to look further into it...

QTopia on Zaurus SL-C860.  I guess I should put my specs in my signature like everyone else.  I\'ll go update that...

I\'m glad to see, from the poll, that there are at least a few people out there who would be interested in having WarCraft II on their Zaurus.

Let\'s get the post-er of that source code involved in this thread.  Maybe he/she can shed some light on this.  Maybe there are some libraries that are also needed...

In one of the link at the top they claim to have already compile ARM binaries.  Has anyone looked at that?

You must use CD warcraft2 version DOS and wargus-2.0pre1.tar (http://wargus.sourceforge.net/download.html) .
In the tar there is a script build.bat for windows and build.sh for linux , this file will allow you to catch the data of CD of warcraft 2  , the result of script is a directory data.wc2 , to copy this directory data.wc2 in SD or CF.
To launch stratagus :
stratagus -d /mnt/card/data.wc2
or
stratagus -d /mnt/cf/data.wc2
and victory .......Warcraft  2 on Z.....It\'s beautiful......

I\'ve tried to load the game \"magnant\" but I haven\'t got enough memory... (I can see the splash screen behind the memory dialog box)

You need the SDL and Lua libraries on your system.

you need to start the game (in 640x480) like this:

Code: [Select]
./stratagus -d -v 1

if you specify
Code: [Select]
-v 6 then it should render in 320x240 (I\'ve hacked the source code...)

Woohoo! This sounds great!

A nicely documented procedure seems like just the thing to get this to a wider audience maybe?

Who will host the war2 image :-) ? Wonder if Blizzard still worries about copyright in WC2?

Does it play with decent speed???

Sounds like just the thing to impress people with my C860 when it FINALLY arraves! :-)

I can\'t get the wartool.exe to create the data.wc2 file.  I typed:

Code: [Select]
wartool D:DATA

Detected UK/Australian original DOS CD

Please be patient, the data may take a couple of minutes to extract...

It then ends after a few seconds.  No errors or anything.  What did I miss?  Can the data.wc2 file be called something else?

I bought my copy of WarCraft II a couple of years ago (I bought the battlechest which included WC1, WC2, and Expansion Set)... could I just get the wc2 file from someone?  online?

Thanks!

I tried running the stratagus attached to this forum on my QTopia.  I tried running it without any parameters and this is what I got:

Code: [Select]
bash-2.05$ ./stratagus

/?stratagus: error while loading shared libraries: libz.so.1: cannot load shared object file: No such file or directory

libz.so.1?!?  Is that a PDAXRom library?  Was this compiled to work with QTopia?

libz.so and libz.so.1 is part of a compression library (zlib).  I usually need it to work with openssl and openssh.  I see that it is on my tkcrom and I imagine it would be present for any ROM that has openssh.

I downloaded the Lua libraries ( lua_0.4_arm.ipk ) from http://zaurus.zefamily.org/files/ (http://zaurus.zefamily.org/files/).  (I hope that\'s the correct file/version).

I reran stratagus by itself and it is improving...

Code: [Select]
bash-2.05$ ./stratagus

Display size = 480x640

could not open translation file /home/QtPalmtop//i18n/zh_TW/lib1.qmid

filename:/home/QtPalmtop/lib/fonts/arial_140_50_t10.qpf

fontName:lcfont , size:10

Display size = 480x640

Maybe those will clear up when I run stratagus with the actual Data.wc2 file and with the correct parameters mentioned above.

Make no promises about this as I\'ve not tried/tested it or ever used lua but I downloaded the source and cross compiled it.... and here\'s the shared library you appear to need.  Unzip it and make sure it has 755 permissions.

Good Luck

OK, I\'ve installed libSDL-1.2.so.0 and the liblua.so provided by tecknobabble, but now I get:
Quote
# ./stratagus -d ./data.wc2/ -v 6
QSocket::writeBlock: Socket is not open

QSocket::writeBlock: Socket is not open
QSocket::writeBlock: Socket is not open
No Qt/Embedded server appears to be running.
If you want to run this program as a server,
add the \"-qws\" command-line option.

It\'s not asking for the zlib\'s; but how do I get around this?

Ok, I get different errors to you, I already had zlib and the sdl stuff and installed the liblua.so provided by tecknobabble,
and I get
Code: [Select]
SLSharedManager: can\'t get proc entry

Display size = 480x640

./stratagus: error while loading sharedlibrariesL ./stratagus: undefined symbol: lua_open

Does liblua.so also require links like liblua.so.0 etc?

It is finding liblua.so as the error message changed when I copied it into /home/QtPalmtop/lib and it is 755 too.

I did say in another thread that warcraft2 would not run on the zaurus, but I woud love to be proved wrong

Tony Olsen:  I D/L\'d (from http://wargus.sourceforge.net/download.html) (http://wargus.sourceforge.net/download.html)) the \"Windows Binary and Source,\" whcih was wargus2.0-pre1.zip, unzipped it, and (With my WC2 CD in the drive) ran \"build.bat,\" which said something about detecting an original US DOS CD, and then \"Please be patient, extraction will take a while.\"  When it exited, the data.wc2 directory had been created in the same directory as build.bat.

I suspect the lua driver I found on the web (see above) works.  I no longer get any lua error messages.  I suspect that the one compiled above has a problem with it (because of the socket errors).

I think that the Windows WarGus makes a \"data\" directory, whereas the other os makes a \"data.wc2\" directory.  That would explain my confusion.  I suspect I have the data files I need.

I think the problem is the screen resolution.  When I try running it I keep getting 1 or 2 error messages that say:

Code: [Select]
Display size = 480x640

If you type

Code: [Select]
./stratagus -h

...you get the help screen.  V=1 is 640x480, and 2,3,4, and 5 go up from there.  I think that WarGus thinks that my screen is 480x640, even though I\'m running terminal in landscape mode, and it says it can\'t run it.  When I switch to 480x640 mode, it doesn\'t say the display error message, but it gives other error messages.

Why does stratagus think I\'m in 480x640 mode when I\'m actually in 640x480 mode?  Is it getting that reading incorrectly from somewhere?  I suspect that if I can change it, it should work.

What do you think?

Ethereal,

That\'s the difference.  About 10 years ago a friend gave me a cracked copy of WarCraft II (doesn\'t require the CD).  I played it and loved it.  About 1 year later I finally bought the game (to ease my conscience), but I never actually used the CD... I continued playing the cracked version (only 16 MB and no CD required).  That was 9 years and 8 moves ago... I haven\'t seen that CD in ages, although I DO have the cracked game still.  Apparently (from my post above) my cracked game came from Australia or UK, even though my CDs were US.

I already bought the game once (and actually, all I wanted was WarCraft II, but it wasn\'t sold by itself anymore, so I had to buy the whole battlechest instead... even though I didn\'t care for WarCraft I and wasn\'t really interested in the expension set.).  I really don\'t want ot have to buy it again...  Can anyone talk to me offline and see if I can get a copy of your \"data.wc2\" directory?

Auughh!  My worst nightmare--the silent failure!

OK, I was getting an \"undefined symbol: lua_open\" error with tecknobabble\'s liblua, so I changed to the lua_0.4_arm.ipk, and now

# ./stratagus -d ./data.wc2 -v 6

yields...nothing!  The screen on the Z flickers (not even long enough to display a perceptible start screen) and the prompt comes back, with no further messages from stratagus.  Nothing in /var/log/messages, either.

Help, please--not only does it not work, but now there\'s no error message to troubleshoot!

I couldn\'t make the stratagus binary posted here running. I compiled lua and stratagus from the sources. stratagus runs (or at least it thinks it does , but I see garbage on the screen, garbage out of the speaker. It kinda look like the real warcraft screen, so I suspect it is working fine.

I suspect that the problem is with SDL. Which SDL package are you guys using on SL-CXX0 (Sharp ROM)?

I tried running it with the bos data pack (which works on my pc) and get the same, ie nothing with or without -v.

-e does the same (should launch the editor)

I am using the 1.2.6-zports_c7x0-1 libsdl (from package manager) and ceds compile of  stratagus.

If i type echo $? to get the return code it is always 255, that is the only hint of an error message I get.

lucho, how about posting your binaries for us to test?

They seem to get a little further.

Peter.

I think the problem is the screen resolution.  When I try running it I keep getting 1 or 2 error messages that say:

Code: [Select]
Display size = 480x640

Why does stratagus think I\'m in 480x640 mode when I\'m actually in 640x480 mode?  Is it getting that reading incorrectly from somewhere?  I suspect that if I can change it, it should work.

That\'s not an error message, and it is coming from sdl.

It is a minor issue due to the fact that your screen is rotated and can be easily fixed with environment variables, if the game worked that is.

Here is my binary. It doesn\'t depend on SDL or lua -- they are linked statically. The SDL library I used is 1.2.7 downloaded from the SDL website.

I just compiled stratagus to use shared libSDL and tried it with libSDL_1.2.6-zports_c7x0-1_arm.ipk -- it worked! )

Here is the new binary:

That doesn\'t quite work for me, but only because my data directory is wrong. I just get a load of file not found type errors looking for the .wav files.

It still seems to be looking for orc type wav files even when trying to load bos.

I guess I need to look for another warcraft2 cd. The irony is that you can\'t actually buy it anywhere, except maybe from ebay, and blizzard wouldn\'t get anything from that sale anyway.

How does it play?  is it fast enough to be useable?

Peter

I had to create 8MB swap file in order to play it. I also get alot of \"Can\'t load the sound ...\" but it still works.

It is playable -- I have to play it on a normal PC for a while to see how big is the difference.

The latest ipk (posted above) works without the lua librarie!  Thanks!

It appears to get farther than before.

I type:

Code: [Select]
./stratagus -d ./ -v 1

It appears to be trying to draw the screen in 480x640 mode (instead of the 640x480 mode I\'m in).  It only quickly flashes that then exits.  It was mentioend that the 480x640 mode is easy to be fixed via environment variables.  Can someone post how to change/fix this? (Thanks  )

The page doesn\'t respond for a while... and then a page full of messages appears, including the \"Can\'t open file \'.....wav\'\" stuff mentioned above.

It then displays \"stratagus\" information (disclaimers, written by, etc), and then it says it can\'t find the file...

...and the terminal stops responding.  I have to close terminal and re-open it to try again...

...but it looks like we\'re getting closer each time!

TonyOlsen,

Which version of SDL do you have installed?

On my Z it does the same -- the only difference is that it is working  I don\'t see the error messages and stratagus information before I exit the game though -- I guess they are printed after the stratagus  window is created.

I opened \"Add/Remove Programs\" in QTopia and found 3 SDL libraries listed:

Code: [Select]
libSDL             1.2.6cvs-1

libSDL-mixer       1.2.5cvs-1

libSDL-net         1.2.5cvs-1

No other \"SDL\" libraries were listed.  Am I missing a library, or are these the wrong versions?

TonyOlsen,

Try http://prdownloads.sourceforge.net/zports/...rm.ipk?download (http://prdownloads.sourceforge.net/zports/libSDL_1.2.6-zports_c7x0-2_arm.ipk?download)

lucho,

So, I take it I\'m using the wrong version?  Does this replace only the main libSDL library, or all 3 of them?  (I need to know since I assume I\'ll need to uninstall a library before installing the newer version.

I found the stuff for rotating and changing display size.

It\'s is from a japanese site, so I had to run it through babelfish.

Code: [Select]
   * SDL_FB_SIZE=XRESxYRES(@)

Screen mode is fixed to XRESxYRES. 640x480 (important point special kernel) and 480x640,320x240,240x320 can be chosen. If @ is attached, width of an argument and height will be disregarded and full-screen screen size will be made into the screen size of application. (About for snes9x) It does not become direct paint mode.

and the enc variable for rotation was :-

Code: [Select]
Put SDL_QT_ROTATION of them 0 or 1 or 2 or 3

Then the screen turns

I can\'t try this as my data dir is not working.

Peter.

Great!   ...so where do I find SDL_FB_SIZE and SDL_QT_ROTATION?  I\'ve never set an environment variable in Linux before.

you can run from the command line

Code: [Select]
export SDL_FB_SIZE=320x240

export SDL_QT_ROTATION=1

the above (after the = sign) are only example values, you may need to change them. You can also run export with no arguments to see what the current environment variables are set to.

Do your binaries include ced\'s -v 6 hack for 240x320 screens?

ok, I created war2.sh which contains:

Code: [Select]
export SDL_FB_SIZE=640x480

export SDL_QT_ROTATION=0

./stratagus /v 1 /d ./

I tried SDL_QT_ROTATION with 0 and 1, and it still doesn\'t work.  One of the messages says: too many files

I suspect I don\'t have the correct data files.

Ethereal,

It doesn\'t. I can try putting it -- do you need 320x240 or 240x320?

TonyOlsen,

Can you run stratagus from the command line (no special variables set) like this and then post s.log?

./stratagus -v 1 -d `pwd` 2]&1 ] s.log

Note that the the quotes around pwd are backquotes.

Oh well, just in case you really need 320x240 -- 6 is 320x240, 7 is 240x320.

Get it from here (http://moria.ionkov.net/zaurus/stratagus/stratagus.gz).

lucho,

I think I need a bigger swapfile (currently 8MB), but that is AWESOME!  It\'s a little slow, and especially with my insistence on using 240x320 (I may give in and rotate shortly), some things are hard to see/understand, but it unquestionably works!

On the less humble Zaurii--with more RAM and VGA screens--this is going to kick @$$!

Other than disabling fastload for everything and enlarging the swapfile, and suggestions for increasing available RAM?

I obtained a copy of the data.wc2 directory and retested stratagus.

Code: [Select]
./stratagus -v 1 -d data.wc2

It takes a few seconds and then the main screen appears (it says: \"Stratagus\" and has a picture of a castle on a mountain).  The music starts, but it sounds all garbled.  I can make out a melody through the static.  Then a WarCraft II style menu appears and I select \"single player\".  The screen we know from War Craft 2 appears with the menu to select the scenario, etc... then I start the game.  The game hints window appears.  I close that I see my single peon on the screen.

Everything looks good, until I go to click on my peon... the whole Zaurus (SL-C860) freezes up and I have to pull the battery to reset the computer.  I\'ve tried this 3 times with the same effects.

I once even tried loading the game, but then exited without touching the peon.  The games exits, but Terminal is frozen.  The Zaurus is still able to load other programs, but the Terminal will not close or respond.  I have to do a soft reset to recover from that.  (But, honestly, I\'m okay with doing a soft reset each time I play WarCraft II... it\'s a small price to pay  ).

I wonder if the music problems are because I have the libSDL-mixer library installed.  This library is needed for PrBoom (Doom).

I don\'t know how to do screen captures inside the Zaurus.  Do you need special software?  If someone would show me how I could try to post some screen shots.  Otherwise I\'ll just take some pictures with my digital camera.

...we\'re getting closer and closer...  has anyone actually played a full game of WarCraft II on their Zaurus?

lucho,

Do you know of any differences between your Zaurus and mine?  Model?  Installed libraries?  Versions of Stratagus?  Screen resolution (I\'m running in landscape 640x480 VGA mode)?

TonyOlsen,

SL-C760, one of the first cacko QTopia ROMs, libSDL_1.2.6-zports_c7x0-1_arm.ipk, no other libraries, VGA mode. I removed Fast Load from all apps and now I can run stratagus without swap file.

That sounds close enough to mine.

My problem only appears when I click on a unit by tapping on the screen.  At this point I take it the unit\'s menu buttons are supposed to appear... but I never see them.  The system simply freezes/crashes.  Maybe the stratagus isn\'t able to load up that menu?... maybe the needed datafiles aren\'t there.

There are 930 files in the data.wc2 directory.  I would like to compare the files in my directory to those in yours.  Could you e-mail me (offline... Ferris@Myself.Com ) a directory listing of all of the files in your data.wc2 directory?  (Filenames, sizes, and relative/full path from data.wc2).

With that I can compare and see if anything is missing (I suspect some needed files, or an entire directory, may be missing, which is causing the crash).

Another thought as well...  we may be using different versions of Stratagus.  I\'m using the one that was posted early on in this thread.  It is 1037132 Bytes.  What\'s your stratagus file size?  Where did you download it from?

Also, do you set any environment variables before you play?  Does WarCraft freeze up the Terminal when you leave the game?

Thanks,

OK, I don\'t know if it\'s ever going to be playable in 240x320 (but thanks, lucho, for at least letting me try!), but I can scroll around the map, select units (but can\'t see the actions menu to make them do anything!)...at this point, the screen is the biggest handicap, closely followed by memory:
Quote
# free
                  total         used         free       shared      buffers
Mem:        29876        29024          852            0          152
Swap:       32764        25640         7124
Total:        62640        54664         7976

lucho, if you happen to compile another binary, a 480 x 640 mode for the SL-6000 folks who might want to play in portrait mode would be the only added touch I can suggest...

I have attempted unsuccessfully to run stratagus on my Zaurus SL-C760 with Sharp ROM 1.20 JP. In the process, I learned a few things that I hope to pass on to others more knowledgeable than myself (I am not a computer programmer, but an end user).
First, I believe I was successful in converting the Warcraft2 data to the data.wc2 directory using the wargus program on Windows 2000. The Windows version of wargus can be downloaded from the following URL:

http://prdownloads.sourceforge.net/wargus/...e1.zip?download (http://prdownloads.sourceforge.net/wargus/wargus-2.0pre1.zip?download)

It is important that one use the build.bat application and NOT the wartool.exe application. When I tried using the latter, it created a \"data\" folder that was not compatible. Instead, by issuing the command \"build.bat /warcraft2\", I was able to generate a \"data.wc2\" directory that appeared to be in the proper format (it will create this directory within the wargus directory). The total generated output was a 13.4 MB directory. Note that I did not use the original CD-ROM, nor is the original CD-ROM necessary. I had a version of Warcraft2 that was installed on my harddrive so that it could run independent of the CD-ROM. What is most important are the data files it is looking for in the \"DATA\" directory of the Warcraft2 game.

After bringing this \"data.wc2\" directory into my Zaurus on an SD card, I turned to getting the stratagus binary file to work. I downloaded the Zaurus compiled version provided above at the following URL:

http://www.zaurususergroup.com/index.php?n...=download&id=96 (http://www.zaurususergroup.com/index.php?name=PNphpBB2&file=download&id=96)

Attempts to run the program were unsuccessful. At first, I received repeated error messages about lacking the lua library. After installing the lua library files I downloaded at the URL below, I was able to get past these errors:

http://zaurus.zefamily.org/files/lua_0.4_arm.ipk (http://zaurus.zefamily.org/files/lua_0.4_arm.ipk)

The SDL library is also essential, but I am not sure what version works (best). I am using libsdl_1.2.5-slzaurus20031118_arm.ipk since it appears to work best for my other applications on a SL-C760. If I use 1.2.6, prboom does not display correctly on a Zaurus 7x0. I tried installing 1.2.6 to see if stratagus would work, but I was unsuccessful in getting it to run with any of these versions of SDL.
When I execute the program using the command \"./stratagus -d /mnt/card/data.wc2 -v 1\", the screen briefly flickers, then it displays:

SlSharedManager: can\'t get proc entry
Display size= 480x680

I have experimented with the various parameters, but have not been able to get the program to run. I suspect that it is a display problem, perhaps related to SDL, but specifically related to the SL-C7x0 series. The others who have reported success runing stratagus were running it on earlier models. I thank ced for compiling the Linux Zaurus binary file, but I can\'t help wondering if the source code needs to be hacked/edited so it is optimized for a SL-C7x0.

I would welcome any assistance or advice from those who have greater experiencing with SDL and the unique display properties of the SL-C7x0. Thank you.

In this thread, there is a later version of Stratagus that was compiled without needing the lua libraries.  My data.wc2 directory is 28.6 MB and contains 930 files.  I also had tried creating the data.wc2 directory from the cracked version of WarCraft II, but I had used wartoool instead of build.bat, which resulted just like you said.  I\'m running on an SL-C860, and, like mentioned above in the thread (with the pictures requested) I\'m able to get it to run up until the point when I click on a character... then it freezes up.  (possibly needing lua library?)

Inside the data.wc2 directory there is a scripts directory which contains a bunch of lua files.  The version of stratagus I was running was compiled without needing the lua libraries... so what happens when it attempts to run these lua scripts?  Maybe that is my problem?

I uninstalled my previosu version of the SDL libraries and installed the version posted to this forum (also the same version, but differen\'t port), and my PrBoom not only works, but now it isn\'t upside down anymore!   Try installing that version (and still keep you sdl-net and sdl-mixer libraries) and PrBoom should still work, and maybe WarCraft 2 will also work?

\"luco\" has compiled stratagus statically with lua library therefore the binary has lua built into it.
If you want I can give you my dynamic lua library which I\'ve used to compile my stratagus binary.
I can\'t test wc2 right now, I need to find the CD... (in my messy house) :-)

Yes, I used that version of stratagus.  The file size was smaller than the first one, so I incorrectly read the post as saying it didn\'t need the lua librraries, not that it had them built in.  You\'re right, I missed that.

Ok... so I guess the lua library isn\'t the problem.  hm...

I was wondering if someone could show me the text I need to compose a script to launch startagus? I am hoping to link that script to a graphic icon in the launcher. I tried writing several scripts, but the application never executed properly.
I want to launch stratagus with a script instead of manually issuing a command in the konsole. Everytime I run stratagus, I run out of memory, and it asks if I want to quit the konsole program. Usually, it freezes at that point.

It sounds like low memory (32 MB and less) Zauri need special setup with a swapfile (see above)... but ... the 320x240 screen doesn\'t appear to be large enough to see all of the menu buttons needed to have units do things (see above).  It looks like Stratagus will only really work on a VGA Zaurus and up...

Correct me if I\'m wrong on this.

On that note, is it possible that stratagus is crashing/freezing on mine because my 64 MB RAM (SL-C860) isn\'t enough?  (I don\'t have a swap file... at least, not that I know of).

Actually, SL-5500 might have an advantage, since it has 64MB of physical RAM, and I know there are ROMs out there that use all 64MB as RAM.  Screen size issue might still hose you, though...

I compared the list of files from my data.wc2 directory and the directory listing sent to me by Lucho.  (Thanks, Lucho!  ).

There are 2 differences.  My data.wc2 diretory is missing the following:

Code: [Select]
[b]/graphics/ui/ore,stone,coal.png[/b] file

The entire [b]/scripts/scripts[/b] directory (this contains a few dozen lua files and directories)

Perhaps this is causing my problem.  Specifically, when I click on the unit, maybe it is attempting to load up one of the lua files and can\'t find it... hence the crash/freeze.

I\'ll try to obtain the missing files and see if that makes the difference.

Just to finish the job, I created an ipk with the stratagus executable. You can download it from here:stratagus_2.0.0-1_arm.ipk (http://moria.ionkov.net/zaurus/stratagus/stratagus_2.0.0-1_arm.ipk)

The executable expects the data directory to be located in /opt/QtPalmtop/lib/stratagus. You can still override it using -d parameter.

I don\'t think I\'ll do anything else regarding stratagus soon -- there are other doomed products besides Zaurus that need my attention ... ;)

I copied over the missing files and now I\'m able to click on a character and have the menu on the left appear... but the game then freezes when I tell the unit to \"Go\" and then click on the mine.

I suspect my data.wc2 directory is bad.  Maybe the files I replaced are a different version from the ones I already had.  I\'ll keep playing around with it...

I was able to get the Stratagus to work on my Zaurus Sl-C760 with the original Sharp ROM. The program runs beautifully! I have not had any freezes or other problems at all. I got it to run with the 13.4 MB \"data.wc2\" directory from a WCII version that was hacked to run without the CD-ROM. Being able to launch it directly without running the konsole seems to have provided the last needed bit of memory to get the program over the hump and running smoothly. If you have not already, be sure to turn off the fastload and restart for all your applications that are eating precious memory.

As for library files, the latest compiled version doesn\'t need the lua library, and I expect that most SDL files will work, but it is best to stay with those that are optimized for SL-7x0 systems. The problems I had resulted first from bad data files (see below) and insufficient memory. For those who are having problems with the data files, especially errors that it cannot load files, then I strongly suggest that you first zip the \"data.wc2\" directory in Windows, load the zip file into your Zaurus (using SMB or FTP), and then unzip it from within the Zaurus. I believe that the files become corrupted as a result of being converted into Windows icons/files (resource/data fork problem?). At any rate, by doing this first, I was able to run the program without any problems. As long as Wargus finishes creating your \"data.wc2\" and says soemthing about having completed (without error), I believe that the data files should work with Stratagus.

Many thanks to Lucho and the others who have made this achievement possible. Perhaps Lucho should consider uploading his ipk to www.killefiz.de/zaurus software index in order to draw more attention to the availabilty of Stratagus/Warcraft on the Zaurus.

You might want to run free afterwards, to make sure it all went off as planned.  You should see 128M of swap represented, nearly all of it free, to begin with.

Be sure to swapoff -a before rebooting/shutting down, or make sure that it is done for you in /etc/rc.d

I logged in as su and then successfully created a 128 MB swapfile (Thanks, Ethereal!  ).

...but WarCraft2 still freezes at the same point.

Here\'s exactly what I do.  For those of you who have WarCraft2 working, try this as well (same keystrokes) and let me know if it works or not.

I\'m using the new stratagus.ipk (Thanks, lucho!  ).  I open Terminal, go to that directory ( /home/QtPalmtop/bin ) and then I open run it using the data.wc2 directory on my CF.

Code: [Select]
./stratagus -d /mnt/cf/War2/data.wc2

I see the stratagus title screen.  I wait and then the menu comes up.  I select campains, then human campagins.  I close the helpful tips screen.

Then I click on the peon, select the \"Return with Goods\" button (it has a \"G\" on it... but don\'t use the keyboard for this).  Everything is good so far.  Then I select the gold mine.  ...it freezes.  The actual image is below.

Does anyone else have trouble when doing this?

I\'m now going to try uncompressing the data.wc2 zip file on my Zaurus, although I would be suprised if this changed anything.  I haven\'t heard of binary files getting corrupted when compressed/uncompressed from one OS to another.  (I know that Mac OS does a bunch of \"frk\" stuff)  I know that Ascii files can get corrupt when translated from one OS to another, but binary is binary and I thought that OS\'s know not to try to \"translate\" binary files.  Anyone else have any thoughts on this?

Thanks!

I don\'t know.  I clicked the \"Move\" button and then select the Gold Mine.  The peon moves to the Gold Mine, but doesn\'t enter... but that\'s only because the game have frozen up again...  I\'m guessing you don\'t need to right click if you use the buttons (or shortcut keys) on the menu on the left...

I think it is only certain combinations of things that causes this.  When I click on the town hall, I build someone without problems.  I can click the peon and select \"Go\" and select some empty area, and he goes there... but when I ask the peon to go to the Mine and try to select another Peon, it freezes again.  *sigh*

TonyOlsen,

Try running the stratagus binary from the launcher file included in lucho\'s ipk. You will need to link his /opt/QtPalmtop/lib/stratagus directory to the location of your data.wc2 directory. I had problems with it freezing when I would click on the peon (I usually got a memory dialogue asking if I wanted to quit the konsole application), but after I was able to run it without the terminal or console open at the same time in the background, it worked fine.

/opt/QtPalmtop/lib/stratagus  ... ah... so that\'s where that stuff is stored.  I was looking for that before but didn\'t know Linux enough to locate it.  Thanks!

My stratagus icon hasn\'t worked since I tampered with the stratagus.desktop file.  I changed:

...and the icon hasn\'t worked since.  I\'ll move it back to the way it was and instead start looking around in the lib directory...

...I can\'t find any stratagus files (that I can recognize) in the lib directory.  What am I looking for?

TonyOlsen,

Perhaps lucho has a better explanation for why the data directory is set for /opt/QtPalmtop/lib/stratagus. You will not find any files there or a \"stratagus\" directory. Instead, this is the location where you are supposed to put your wc2 data files. Since no one wants to put a huge number of files there, it is better to create a symlink to your data.wc2 directory. Since Lucho has set the directory to stratagus, you will need to rename the link in /opt/QtPalmtop/lib from \"data.wc2\" to \"stratagus\". This process can be easy done using Tree!Explorer or FileManager.

By the way, I am now able to run the program successfull from the terminal (don\'t ask me why, but it does). When I quit stratagus from the normal exit menu, the last lines in the konsole display the following:

Trigger not set, defining trigger
Thanks for playing Stratagus

From this, I believe that the trigger message does not indicate a failure or problem with Stratagus. Therefore, I believe that is most likely a system error (perhaps memory?) that is causing the crash.

(Weird... it appears that /opt/QtPaltmop/lib and /home/QtPalmtop/lib are the same thing.  Maybe there was a symlink in there that I missed..   )

Ok... just to make sure I understand this correctly:

I need to create a symlink in /opt/QtPalmtop/lib called stratagus (NOT data.wc2) which points to /mnt/cf/War2/data.wc2.  Did I get that right?

Using KCommander I created a symlink called stragaus for the data.wc2 directory.  The symlink resulted in the same directory as the data.wc2 directory.  I moved the new stragaus symlink to /opt/QtPalmtop/lib.  Then I rebooted my Zaurus (just to be sure).  Then I clicked on the \"stratagus\" icon...

...that was 5-10 minutes ago.  The hourglass is gone, but the \"flash explosion\" graphic over the stratagus icon is still there.

I must\'ve done something wrong...

I think I created my stratagus symlink incorrectly...  In the lib directory the symlink is 1037132 Bytes (1 MB?!?) in size.  I tried the following:

Code: [Select]
bash-2.05$ cd stratagus

bash: cd: stratagus: Not a directory

Is there a terminal command for creating symlinks?  (I never thought I would actually ask for a terminal command instead of actually doing it in GUI    )

ln -sf /opt/QtPalmtop/lib/stratagus /mnt/cf/War2

that should work.  just test it by going into the directory and seeing it your data.wc2 file is there:
cd /opt/QtPalmtop/lib/stratagus
ls

I open terminal.  (I assume that this command can be executed from any directory)

Code: [Select]
bash-2.5$ ln -sf /opt/QtPalmtop/lib/stratagus /mnt/cf/War2

ln: /mnt/cf/War2/stratagus: Operation not permitted

bash-2.05$ su

# ln -sf /opt/QtPalmtop/lib/stratagus /mnt/cf/War2

ln: /mnt/cf/War2/stratagus: Operation not permitted

#

I looked at the ln help and I think we\'re running it wrong.  I CD-ed to the lib directoy.  Enterred \"su\", and then ran:

Code: [Select]
# ln -sf /mnt/cf/War2 stratagus

That appears to have worked right.

I exited the terminal and clicked on the \"Stratagus\" icon...

same as before...

whoops, reverse the directories:
ln -sf /mnt/cf/War2 /opt/QtPalmtop/lib/stratagus

sorry, i always get that mixed up.
ln is the command for linking, -s is to make a symlink and the f is to force it (erace a previous one if there)

Then you put the place you want to link and then where to link to.

and yes, probably has to be run as root and make sure the directory is created before you link it:
mkdir  /opt/QtPalmtop/lib/stratagus

you do not have to make a dir to create a link.  You\'re probablty thinking of a mount point.

I even tried uninstalling and reinstalling stratagus_2.ipk .  I move the stratagus.desktop from Applications to Games.  I don\'t think that should make a difference, would it?

Hm... I think I may have stumbled onto something here...

In terminal I did the following:

Code: [Select]
bash-2.05$ su

# cd /home/QtPalmtop/bin

# ./stratagus

Qt/Embedded data directory is not owned by user 0

Aborted

# ./stratagus -d /mnt/cf/War2/data.wc2

Qt/Embedded data directory is not owned by user 0

Aborted

# exit

bach-2.05$ ./stratagus

Display size = 480x640

could not open translation file /home/QtPalmtop//i18n/zh_TW/libs1.mid

filename:/home/QtPalmtop/liob/fonts/arial_140_50_t10.qpf

fontName:lcfont , size:10

Maybe you need to specify another gamepath with \'-d /path/to/datadir\'?

bash-2.05$ ./stratagus -d /mnt/cf/War2/data.wc2

Display size = 480x640

could not open translation file /home/QtPalmtop//i18n/zh_TW/libs1.mid

filename:/home/QtPalmtop/liob/fonts/arial_140_50_t10.qpf

fontName:lcfont , size:10

./stratagus by itself couldn\'t find the /home/QtPalmtop/lib/stratagus symlink I created for it.  Are we sure that it looks for \"stratagus\" at this location?

zaurus:~$ ls -l /opt/Qtopia/lib/stratagus
lrwxrwxrwx 1 root root 16 May 9 15:43 /opt/QtPalmtop/lib/stratagus -] /mnt/cf/data.wc2

In your case you need /opt/QtPalmtop/lib/stratagus to point to /mnt/cf/War2/data.wc2, i.e.

su
rm /opt/QtPalmtop/lib/stratagus
ln -s /mnt/cf/War2/data.wc2 /opt/QtPalmtop/lib/stratagus

That did it!  Now I can run the game from the icon!

Testing...

Human Campain.  Click on Peon, select harvest button, select Gold Mine.  Peon enters mine.  Select Town Hall...

...Zaurus freezes.

...so close!

I had my 128 MB swapfile turned on, and last I checked I had about 160 MB free... that should be enough, so I\'m assuming this isn\'t a memory issue...

While Stratagus was running, I switched over to Terminal to see how much memory was being used.  It went from around 30 MB being used to around 60 MB being used.

In other words, it looks like Stratagus takes about 30 MB to run.  (And I only had about 1.4 MB free.  Thank goodness I have a 128 MB swapfile  ).

More details on the crash: It appears to never happen when I click on a menu on the left and only happens when I click on a unit or building.  This tells me that stratagus crashes while either loading up a new sound file (even though I have the sound turned off) or while loading up the new menu on the left.

you can put all your staff in cf,include Stratagus and data.wc2.
create a war2.sh file like this:
/mnt/cf/war2/Stratagus -d /mnt/cf/war2/data.wc2

put it into /opt/QtPalmtop/bin
give it run permission,
then you can create a new icon in your game tab by the tool ホーム画面設定
this is what I did,it runs fine.

guys,

any idea what the problem might be? When I start stratagus from the console on my Z5500, I get an SDL error, saying that the video device is not available. Nevertheless libSDL 1.2.6 and all related SDL libraries are  installed and working.

I am using stratagus_2.0.0-1_arm.ipk

My commandline parameters:
./stratagus -d /opt/Qtopia/lib/stratagus -v 7

and the error I get on the console right after the start:
Couldn\'t initialize SDL: No available video device

thanks,
Ulf

It \"feels\" like a memory issue.  Is there a way to force Linux to free up X MB from the terminal?... or a way to run a program (such as stratagus) with pre-allocated memory, so that nothing else uses that memory except for stratagus?

It seems like when I move slower in the game it takes longer before it crashes.  ...almost as if the Zaurus has had time to alocate the needed additional memory...

I\'ve finally setup a swap partition using a network block device.
But warcraft doesn\'t render the entire screen in 320x240... half of the screen is hidden, it would be nice if we can un-scaled it by 2.
Do you think is something that I can hack in the SDL library or in stratgus?

I didn\'t have any crash so far with 64M of swap. I\'ve click everywhere but I can\'t play the game because the left panel is half hidden!

I freezes when it is about to load the unit\'s menu (and audio sound?) on the left.  It happens randomly for me... sometimes I can click on a peon have him go to the gold mine, click on soldier and have him move, but then it freezes when I click on town hall.  Other time it freezes on the first click on a unit.

I wish I could take a poll of which Zaurus models are and aren\'t having problems.  It seems like this is only a problem on the SL-C860 models...

I know some of you are going to hate me for this, but in order to track this down I need to know more about the pattern of failure.. so I\'m going to create a new thread with a poll asking which Zaurus you\'ve played WarCraft on.  Please visit it and let me know... and then we\'ll see if it really IS a problem with the 860 or whether that isn\'t a pattern at all...

Other people, who have gotten Stratagus working, have said that they also saw this message.... but they may have been in 240x320 mode and maybe they didn\'t actually click on any units... so maybe they would\'ve frozen too....

there\'s no seem to be any link between sound/pattern loading for me as the zaurii is hanging even if I tap somewhere on the grass over the map (e.g not on a unit ... I think it must a rom/library related problem ... another thing it could be is ... I have a memory problem on my Z which was causing me some trouble to change the rom back in time (fixed with new installers versions) and which is also causing me some visual bugs (blinking pixels over the screen with some roms during the boot up screen etc...) .... I\'ve heard that there were a few \"buggy\" SL-C860 like mine so it may also be the problem

.... when i click on a unit it freeze, sometime I can click on two units but after it freeze up.....

Seem the problem may come from a rom/library version mismatch and not a unit incompatibility  .... I gonna give a last chance to Cacko\'s rom 1.21a then try switching to a different rom

I built stratagus for pdaXrom , and i don\'t encounter any problems of freeze , i don\'t use any partition swap , if you want the binary stratagus , i can you send to test it.

Thanks. lucho.

I got a request from a friend:

Code: [Select]
If you can jot down the one-key command shortcuts (so I can actually get a unit to "do" something) I\'ll enter the results of a little actual gameplay. I haven\'t gotten Stratagus/Wargus working on my laptop yet, SO I still haven\'t seen a command menu...

...so I\'ll jot down some commands here...

If you select a Peon, you can:
* Move - (then select another location to move to... note: at that location, the unit doesn\'t do anything...
* Stop - Stop moving... this is good when your units are about to attack someone/something and you don\'t want them to
* Attack - Attack something.  After pressing this, select the location you want to attack
* Repair - If your buildings are damaged, click this, and then select the building you want
* Harvest - You can harvest trees and gold.  Select this and then select a tree or a gold mine.
* Build Basic Structure - Build a building.  After selecting this you can then select what building to build, such as: Farm, Barracks, and Town Hall.  As you advance in the game you\'ll be able to build more and more buildings.  There are about about 16 buildings you can build.  After you press a key to select the building, then select a location.

Those are only a few of the keys, but it should be enough to play around with and to see if it works or not.   Let me know if that is what you\'re looking for...

The binary is opensource, so it is safe to post the binary on this forum (isn\'t it?).  ronba, Could you post the binary here so pdaXrom users can test it?

Wait a second!  Stratagus is compiled to work with particular ROMs?  So, you can\'t compile stratagus to generically work with all ROMs?

THAT\'S IT!!  I suspect stratagus was compiled for the standard SL-C7x0 ROM, which is pretty different from the standard SL-C860 ROM!!!  Can someone try compiling stratagus for the standard (dynamism or no) Sharp ROM for SL-C860?  I\'m thinking that might be the problem!  What does everyone else think?

No panic with the start stratagus , it show files that cannot read ( I  don\'t know why ? ) , but finally warcraft2 start.
Sometimes there is a problem with the mouse on mini map , it lost the calibre ,so for the recalibrate, you must put the mouse in a corner and move it away from corner , then click around screen center , the mouse will be recalibre.

No problem the binary stratagus on pdaXrom  maybe to share , to test it.

I got WarCraft 2 working on C860, first try.
I installed stratagus package from the forum.
Added the symbolic link /opt/QtPalmtop/lib/stratagus -] /mnt/card/data.wc2
And clicked the Icon.

The games started and I played (and got my butt kicked) for a couple hours.  I did not get to finish my game because when I tried to save the game it died.  When I open it back it shows up under saved games but won\'t load.

Anyway thanks everyone for making this work.

Just to throw in my 2cents, I got the game up and running first try as well (well, I actually thought it had crashed, but it just took a while to load).
I\'m using the TKCrom rom on a C760 (haven\'t gotten around to flashing to Cacko).
I have libSDL 1.2.6-zports_c7x0-1 from the zports page.

Tony & Thc: Given the issues you\'re having - are you sure it\'s not something you have installed that\'s killing the install? Why not try backing up your Z, formatting the flash, and reinstalling clean (with just the necessary libsdl stuff) to see if it\'s not something else?

CACkO Zaurus Qtopia ROM 1.21 Not 1.21a
libsdl_1.2.5-slzaurus20031201 older version, but seems to work
stratagus_2.0.0-1_arm.ipk Thanks lucho!

Seems like the older version of libsdl works best. Looks like joeldc13 got it working with the same version.

I\'ve been playing through the human campaigns.  It\'s been great!...

...but on occasion Stratagus will simply close without warning, and I lose my place in the game.  All in all, that isn\'t too bad.   Stratagus, in most ways, is actually better than the original WarCraft 2, because of the extra abilities.

ThC, I\'m glad to hear that Stratagus is working for you now.

Does anyone else have any remaining problems getting Stratagus working?

Tony,
I was not even getting the gfx screen up when running from the terminal on cacko qt 1.20. I tried the correct sdl as well.

I thought I would add some swap space, but it failed to work using the exact same commands I have always used

Anyway, I was going to re-flash to qt1.21 at some point so I tried that and got the same error messages, and no graphics display.

Anyway, I tried the symlink and ran it from the icon and it works fine, I am on human campaign 4 at the moment, it is a tad slow, overclocking helps a lot, but with a game like this the speed doesn\'t actually hinder too much.

So far no crashes/lockups at all.  Thanks to all involved with this little gem.

Now I really must re-install my apps.

Peter.

The WC2-folder didn\'t contain a graphics-dir, so I tried to use the freecraft graphics.
The problem is... It looks scary. The buttonbars are at wrong positions etc.
Could anybody of you give me a copy of his directory, named \"graphics\"  ?? ... PLEASE

Has anyone (else) tried Stratagus on the SL-6K?  I\'ve got the ironic situation of having gotten it running on my 5600, where I can\'t see anything, and having the all-too-frequently-described \"freeze/crash after clicking on one or two units\" on my 6000.  I\'m using the libSDL1.2.6-zports library, as the other libSDL (that worked on my 5600) doesn\'t render anything correctly to the 6000 screen.

Has anybody managed to complet level 8( I think) on the human campaign?

It\'s the one where the objectives are :-

- Quell the peasant uprising
- Build a castle
- Destroy enemy forces

I have now tried this 3 times and cannot get the game to admit that I have dcompleted it

I have destroyed everything that moves (including sheep) built not just one, but three castles, and then after mining all the availible gold and chopping down every tree, I have then killed all my peons, just to make sure that task one is complete.  I then proceded to destroy all the farms, and then continued this destruction till I was left with one castle and 1 paladin.  Still it will not give me the victory screen

Has anybody got past this level?

Peter

They where pretty persistent in building those shipyards in that duckpond.

And, yes I tried that too.sadly you run out of oil and that old duck pond does not contain any oil at all.

I\'m going to have a go at the orc campaign instead now.  I have a saved game I can go back to.

Funny you should mention that... I was stuck at the same spot having done the same thing.  I have many dozens of flying zeplins patrolling the board and hundreds of knights patrolling every sector.  At almost every second the enitre map is lit up so I can see everything.

I wonder if it is a bug in the Stratagus engine and that the peasants being \"quelled\" didn\'t register.  That\'s my only guess.  I\'ll try killing off all of my peasants and see if that works...

Heya everyone,

First lucho, was wodnering if you wanted to put stratagus ipk on zports web page ? Thats would be a great package  (I am admin there with mteira).

Second, i checked all the thread (well quick reading). Anyone know what is wrong with the zports SDL 1.2.6 ? We always looking forward to fix it, etc etc. Anyway I didnt compiled for a while for my zaurus (especially i broke the LCD), but Im a big WC2 fan so i will probably check this week !

Well i have to check a couples of stuff first, but this is really cool !

Im also looking to compile daphnee-emu.com (sp) (Dragon\'s Lair II and Space Ace emu) in futur, but I cant find the old data yet (the videos).

Cool stuff !

Tried that.  I wasted everything but one castle (required to complete the level) and one paladin (he seems unwilling to kill himself)

I also turned off the \"fog of war\" so I could see the entire screen, I then wasted all the sheep, and just in case, I demolished all the walls from the cities as well.

I believe the peasents that are \"uprising\" are the red ones, the green ones are allies and should not need to be destroyed (not in the original anyway).

IT would help if  the completed objectives got a tick after them once they had been achieved, this way we would know which one wasn\'t being detected properly.

I guess the only solution is to play the level on the desktop, and then move the save file to the Zaurus afterwards.

Hm... maybe THAT\'s the problem.  Has anyone played the level all the way through without saving?  Maybe Stratagus doesn\'t correctly save the \"ticks\"?... so when you reload the game it doesn\'t remember your accomplishments (kinda\' like my boss)...

I can see only 1/4 of screen and cant scroll this... there are and tip, I think if I use vnc server and client... and run this I can resize and scroll, can we change the virtual screen of Qtopia!?

I use stratagus with Wargus in my Zaurus SL-5500, and game play is very good but I have same issues... I can see 1/4 on the game... because my screen is 320x240,

But I found in FREEDROID a possible solution this uses SDL too, and has a "-r N" option where N is a scale factor, I use 0.5 and I play very nice on my PDA.... I think... this feature can be work for us in SHARP Zaurus PDAs!

I have been able to get stratagus with a modified version of the WC2 data to work with the SL-5500  ! It works great! I still need to modify it a bit more to get some of the menus to work right. Other than that it runs perfect! When I think I have modified it enough, I might make a download avaliable somewhere if I can find a place to put it. See the screenshots that I attached.

Althought the game seems to run smoothly as it is reactive, the units movement is rather slow... anyone knows if this is an option-solvable issue?

You can turn up the game speed in the speed options menu. Other than that I don't know any other way.

I played with it and it was really slow at the beginning, and had to overclock the CPU to achieve playable speed. But when you reach stage 4, it suddenly runs faster without any tuning at all! I wonder if it is by design to let players get used to the gameplay initially.

I need to know how to get Stratagus running on my Zaurus SL-5500, and I need a link to download a version of it that is compiled, because I have almost no idea how to get this done on my own.

Does anyone know how to compile stratagus 2.1 for the Z(Qtopia)? It would sure be nicer to have 2.1 than 2.0, and plus the data I have compiled for the 5500 would probably work better. I had original ported it from 2.1 to 2.0.

Does anyone know where I could get a data.wc2 file?  I only have the battle.net edition CD - am I correct in understanding that it has to be the original DOS version CD in order to extract the data file properly?

Thanks!

About compiling stratagus 2.1 instead of 2.0: stratagus with version 2.1 has switched to using opengl and refreshing each frame entirely, thus making it slower than 2.0 on the zaurus.

Please tell me I'm wrong!

How is it possible that pdaXrom has 2.1 and the Sharp rom only has 2.0?

I have installed on cacko rom 1.23 (zaurus 3200) stratagus and data.wc2 The game is ok but the sound not. The problem is the music intro (file default.mod.gz in music directory) toccata.mod It's croaking while the other files (*.wav) are good. any ideas?

Four thoughts:

-Bad rip
-Higher bit rate
-More CPU usage in the background while that one tries to play, causing it to play poorly
-Some combination of the above

I'm no expert in this area, but those are the things that occur to me.

bad rip and higher bit rate I don't believe because stratagus works good. Then when I play I don't use program in background..

That's probably not this but did you uncheck the memory preloading in the options for launching the Sharp PIM apps ?

If you tap and hold the stylus on the icons, it will bring up a window, which has the option to "pre-load" apps, which uses RAM, but makes them load faster. If you uncheck that box, you can free up some RAM.

I tap and hold on stratagus icon, this is the screen shot, but it isn't the option to "pre-load" apps.

Sorry, not on Stratagus, on the other apps themselves. Go through all of them and uncheck the box (I can't remember which ones have it).

I took a screenshot of Address Book's "properties"
Uncheck "Fast Load"
Most of the PIM apps will have Fast Load checked by default in a newly flashed Sharp or Cacko ROM.
Some other apps may also have Fast Load checked, but look at the PIM apps first.
