Title: What The Heck Did I Just Do...
Post by: tcv on January 13, 2005, 11:49:44 am
Whenever I read a message like the one I'm about to write, I find it a bit frustrating. How is it that I am supposed to help someone else with a case of Buyer's Remorse. I don't know what to tell them.

And yet, I feel like >I< have buyer's remorse after having purchased my c3000... and I don't know what I should do.

I received my C3000 yesterday from Dynamism and it's a nice device. It's smaller than I thought, very compact, but easy to use.  The screen is amazing and while I don't really care for the fonts installed, it's pretty darn nice.

Then I asked myself a question that I should have asked BEFORE I bought it:

What the heck do I do with it?

I had planned to purchase it and install Debian as per the HOW TO. I wanted the experience with Linux and I had been playing with a SuSE desktop in my spare time. So, I thought this would be a great experience, plus, with all the accolades I read about Linux and how it's going to help me be a better person (technically, mind you), I figured it's a can't miss.

Then I started to list the things I _COULD_ use it for ... and I came up quite blank. Date Book? Address Book? Phone List? On-The-Go Internet Access? That's all done on my Treo 600.

And then? And then?

I drew a blank. And I became very nervous that since this is a Japanese device and since I don't ultimately know what the heck I'm doing in Linux, I could seriously damage it and wind-up, simply, out-of-luck.

I obviously don't know what I _CAN_ do with such a device. What is it? A PDA? A mini-computer? If it's a mini-computer, how I can carry it as a desktop replacement? Is that even possible? How do I even connect it up to a desktop to transfer files?

Dynamism did not ship any English documentation to me. I was a bit surprised, but I figured I just missed something.

Is it possible to install Debian w/ ICEWM and Open-Office? That would make it a pretty darn nice documentation manager. Does Debian see the same WiFI cards QTopia does?

I am sitting here looking at what could be a simply wonderful device with all kinds of possibilities, but I don't know what I should nor what I can do with it!

For the first time since owning computers, I don't know what the heck to do. ;-)

Any thoughts are welcome.

Cheers,

Mike...

This may help you on your quest to find out what this machine will do and also give you a guide http://www.streamlinecpus.com/forum/local_...n=links&catid=1 (http://www.streamlinecpus.com/forum/local_links.php?action=links&catid=1) as we ship these with each unit doesn't make much sense to ship a unit that is Japanese without being able to supply you a guidline to go with it. Hope this helps.

That URL isn't working. I can ping the IP, but I can't raise a web site there.

Looking forward to seeing what you sent.

Cheers,

Since I'm sitting here unable to access your document, and have a lot of time before I can download it at another spot, what's in it?

tcv,

I have no idea how anything that I say could change your mind, but ...

My C3K arrived last week and I don't have buyers remorse. My basic plan is to use my Z as a power pda. I'm responsible for 8-10 unix/linux servers here ain my shop. The my 3K has already paid off w/ it's built in telnet client. From a sys admin view, this thing rocks.

My official migration from my old PPC is this weekend for the PIM use. I've taken a look at the built in PIM apps and have found them lacking. I'm not sure if I'll buy the TKC apps or just get involved in the PIM development for Qtopia. My C is a bit rusty so maybe I'll get involved.

I seriously doubt that I'll be doing the full debian install. I'll probally hang w/ the stock ROM and just install replacement apps.

Hope this helps.

BTW There's nothing wrong w/ the streamline link. Works fine for me

Just a quick note, Mike...from a fellow C3000 user....

Have used the C760, C860, and now the C3000...ALL very nice little devices!

Have also used everything from Newts, HPC's, Palm's, and PPC's....

The little Z's (especially the clamshell's, IMHO) are great. I tend to think of them as a mini convertible TabletPC like device and less as a PDA. Although, if you just stick with the pre-loaded apps, you can just use it as a PDA. However, if you do that, maybe you'd be just as well off with a Palm or PPC, etc...

The cool thing with the Z's is that they have the power to be much more than just a PDA. With most Z's (less with the C3000, due to it's recent arrival) you can replace your ROM with one YOU want, that does more of what YOU want, or even create your own if YOU want (and have the skills).

You can even put a Linux distro like Debian, etc on it! and then it really is a mini-laptop.

So, maybe the point is that the Z's let YOU decide what you want it to be rather than just accept what the manufacturer, Sharp decided it should be for you.

In the end, it's up to YOU to decide whether this power/flexibility is of any value or interest to you.

For me, it's been a great way to get further into the world of Linux and in a form that I can carry with me almost anywhere.

That's why I like my Z...

Well, I am having a terrible time accessing the site.

I can get there now, but when I click on Downloads, nothing happens. I've tried it in Firefox _and_ IE.

The link provided above produced a 404 in both IE and Firefox.

I wonder if it's my hosts file...

Yes, it is !

I've OpenOffice 1.1.4 installed on my debian chroot.

Maybe you could take a look here (https://www.oesf.org/forums/index.php?showtopic=9654&st=30) (if you're interested)
