Hey guys.
I'd like to compile a list of very good (mature) software for the Z so that newbies don't get overwhelmed by the avalanche of apps available on it.
If you have very good apps you think no one should miss, reply here with name, link, and whatever info you think is necessary.
I'll update with mine in a few.
Please do NOT post questions/comments so this thread stays on-course, and easy to read
My personal list:
KDEP Pimpi (http://sourceforge.net/project/showfiles.php?group_id=104103&package_id=112604) Zautrix is our savior! Send him bug reports here (https://www.oesf.org/forums/index.php?showtopic=10063)
Opie Reader (http://www.timwentford.uklinux.net/) cool text reader.
Joe (http://zsi2.stonekeep.com/index.php?v=d&a=623)'s Own Editor. Just a nice CLI text editor.
QPE Filemanager (http://www.killefiz.de/zaurus/showdetail.php?app=173) Just a little less braindead than the Files tab.
Qpdf2 (http://sourceforge.net/projects/qpdf2/) Get the freetype package.

APPS
NEOCAL
Provides a very good calculator for the Z, much better than the one built in. Free version very usable.
http://www.hudren.com/products/neocal/ (http://www.hudren.com/products/neocal/)
INTERNET TOOLS
GAIM FOR QTOPIA
MSN messenger, Jabber, and AIM support. (A bit finicky in the install. Feh.)

QAZOO
Yahoo Instant Messenger support.
http://qazoo.sourceforge.net/ (http://qazoo.sourceforge.net/)
Software I can't immediately find homepages for that I find useful:
NeIC - IRC client for the Zaurus
EmbeddedKonsole - For Unix programming, much better than the old Terminal.
OpieFTP - Basic FTP client
NETWORK SECURITY TOOLS
http://www.irongeek.com/all.php (http://www.irongeek.com/all.php)
For geeks only. Summary of Wellenreiter, Kismet, ZEthereal, etc.
GAMES
There are some interesting games out there, yes. But occasionally one finds the need to waste small amounts of time playing ZSolitaire. (http://only.mawhrin.net/~geometer/zaurus/zsolitaire.html)
-
The apps I use almost daily.
Tree Explorer QT Plus+ (http://hpcgi2.nifty.com/taku2001/zau/texplorerqt_p/top_en.cgi) (buy it)

Another Zaurus essential : Portabase !
http://portabase.sourceforge.net/ (http://portabase.sourceforge.net/)
-
For the enlightened "mobile developer" :
A complete Python 2.3 (2.4 forthcoming) environment, plus PyQt for GUIs and SQLite3 bindings, in one neat package by Kopsis.
Installs easily as one large image file to a (FAT) CF or SD card, seen as a read/write ext2 filesystem thanks to some Linux magic.
The 2.4 version will also be available as a 'cramfs' image, about 5 times smaller, but read-only.
http://pyqplayer.sourceforge.net/cgi-bin/b...qPlayerDownload (http://pyqplayer.sourceforge.net/cgi-bin/bin/view/Main/PyqPlayerDownload)
EDIT:
For coding directly on the Z, you can use ZEditor (already mentioned in this thread) just like with any text file, or the more specialized VisiScript. It is based on the well-known Scintilla engine (Qt version) and supports colored syntax for several languages (python perl ruby tcl etc.) as well as other niceties usually found in IDEs:
http://www.mneuroth.de/privat/zaurus/visiscript.html (http://www.mneuroth.de/privat/zaurus/visiscript.html)
EDIT2:
The new python 2.4 images by Kopsis are available:
http://pyqplayer.sourceforge.net/cgi-bin/b...qPlayerDownload (http://pyqplayer.sourceforge.net/cgi-bin/bin/view/Main/PyqPlayerDownload)

A touch of the exotic, from Switzerland : ELOG
Not as well know as their cheese, chocolate, gold bars, Victorinox knives and luxury watches, but nice and useful too, and free :-)
Read up on ELOG here : http://midas.psi.ch/elog/ (http://midas.psi.ch/elog/)
It's a versatile, 'batteries-included' weblog app (no separate web server or database needed) that can be turned into almost anything (blog, forum, note-taking, database etc.). Very simple to configure. Can replicate or synchronize between ELOG servers, & much more.
To try it out: grab the tar.gz archive on the site above (no IPK yet, sorry) and follow the Linux install instructions except for the "make" part.
Then get the ready-made binaries for the Z here :
http://fredp.lautre.net/Z/ (http://fredp.lautre.net/Z/)
Copy them to the 'bin' directory under your ELOG installation and off you go...

TextMaker: Word processing with all desktop features of MS Word and combatible to .doc.
Commercial 49.95$
Trial version also aviable.

InkWP http://www.geocities.co.jp/SiliconValley-O...4550/inkwp.html (http://www.geocities.co.jp/SiliconValley-Oakland/4550/inkwp.html)
Handy note take that lets you write on the screen then transpose to text later
Opie Reader - already mentioned above but this app rocks - Thanks Tim! Probably the most used program on my Z.
X/Qt http://xqt.sourceforge.jp/ (http://xqt.sourceforge.jp/)
For when qtopia doesn't quite cut it, but you don't want to install pdaX
FreeNoteQT http://www.urban.ne.jp/home/kanemori/zaurus/freenote_e.html (http://www.urban.ne.jp/home/kanemori/zaurus/freenote_e.html)
Great note app and very usefull for making quick maps, diagrams etc
KeyHelper Applet http://yakty.s31.xrea.com/linuzau/keyhelper/ (http://yakty.s31.xrea.com/linuzau/keyhelper/)
remap your keys, make shortcuts keys to start apps etc etc etc. maslovsky has added keyhelper support to CryKeyboard but it's a little out of date now (latest version is 1.2.2)
Zsafe http://z-soft.z-portal.info/zsafe/ (http://z-soft.z-portal.info/zsafe/)
Keep your passwords in a safe place - have been using this since way before PWM/PI became available.
ZEditor http://satoshi.web5.jp/f_soft/dw_engzd.htm (http://satoshi.web5.jp/f_soft/dw_engzd.htm)
Handy little text editior

I don't do much with my Zaurus, but I do use the Spoken program that converts text to speech. It is a java program that incorporates the flite speech processer and requires jeode. I have used it with my 5500 and 6000L. This has read me the news while I am jogging and walking to work for over a year now. For the money ($13 US) It is the best thing I have bought for my zauri.
http://www.handango.com/PlatformProductDet...xtSearch=spoken (http://www.handango.com/PlatformProductDetail.jsp?productType=2&optionId=1_9_2&jid=C5B9E815B6AC441C32DE3EE6D411AX43&platformId=9&siteId=1&productId=54555§ionId=0&catalog=80&txtSearch=spoken)
-
how does it compare to flite?
-
Stuff I use frequently:
QPDF2
NeoCal
Keyring
QPSword
Zbedic
ZUC
Drawpad
MooView (Fastest JPEG viewer I have found for large pictures)
I'd also like to point out that the Embedded Linux Software Index (http://www.elsix.org) has a voting system, which would be a good way of ranking people's favourites in a more organised fashion.
-
how does it compare to flite?
[div align=\"right\"][a href=\"index.php?act=findpost&pid=64077\"][{POST_SNAPBACK}][/a][/div]
There's a demo available for download. I didn't like it myself. But to each his own I guess.
-
media: mplayer
office:hancom is nice. a port of siag might be pretty cool
browser:opera but isn't gpl. minim(gpe only)o, firefox.
uae (haven't got it going quite right yet, but i have high hopes)
doom
zbedic w/wikipedia
zroadmap
qazoo (would like to see gaim work more reliably)
kphone
opie advanced fm
XQT
gutenbrowser (currently not working properly on shaprrom--worked great in opie)
qtreader
fbvncserver
keypebble
flite
one or two others
-
To try to respond to your question adf, the Spoken program is really just a java front end for flite, the way I understand it. I haven't been able to get flite to work yet so I can't compare the two.
-
hmmm..... My flite was just a binary that I exracted on my sd card. It simply worked when invoked. Maybe you should try a different flite package?
-
Then get the ready-made binaries for the Z here :
http://fredp.lautre.net/Z/ (http://fredp.lautre.net/Z/)
Copy them to the 'bin' directory under your ELOG installation and off you go...
[div align=\"right\"][a href=\"index.php?act=findpost&pid=62558\"][{POST_SNAPBACK}][/a][/div]
I tried elog. very nice, starting to record my experience with 6k into the elog. However, the latest version is 2.5.6. The binary you provided, which works very nicely, is only 2.5.3. Can you update your binary or Can you teach me how to make the binary for Zaurus.
-

TextMaker (http://www.softmaker.de/tmq_en.htm)
[div align=\"right\"][a href=\"index.php?act=findpost&pid=62566\"][{POST_SNAPBACK}][/a][/div]
I had a look at TextMaker and it's so much more full-featured than Hancom Word. Am using the demo (no .doc or .rtf saving) right now. My wife and I are editors/writers and we needed an app with full support for styles and formatting.
... but $50 is steep. Really steep. I don't know if it's worth that much, or if it's just better to deal with the shortcomings of Hancom Word.
As for software, I'm reliant on a lot of what's already been mentioned and linked: Kismet, Gaim, qpdf, KDE-PIM/Pi (with KPhone) and Kino 2.

Well, there are four ways I know of, from hardest to easiest :
- install a cross-compiling environment on your home PC
- install a native ARM gcc on your Zaurus
- access a ready-made platform made available by nice people (handhelds.org)
- have an already-equipped nice person make it for you and mail it to you
See this thread in which I learned these things :
[a href=\"https://www.oesf.org/forums/index.php?showtopic=5167]https://www.oesf.org/forums/index.php?showtopic=5167[/url]
I have tried the last 2 ways myself :-)
Right now I am back on a handhelds.org Ipaq compiling 2.5.6.
I'll let you know when the package on my web page is updated...
(and of course 2.5.7 will appear the very next day :-)
-
There, the new binaries are up now.
Haven't had time to test them on my Z though, you tell me :-)
-
My favorite apps which I run on my Yopy using Qtopia 1.7 are (in order of use):
Opie Reader as many have said, I echo the positive sentiments.
zBedic
Portabase
qPDF
Interstellar Flames (I also play Doom and Xmame a lot but under X)
ZUC
There seems to be a consensus of what is essential ;-)
-
I use my Z pretty hard, and I just recently reflashed with Cacko-lite and installed all my favourite "Best of Breed" software that I've sorted through over the last few years. My current app loadout:
KO/PI
KA/PI
OM/PI -These apps freed my from years of servitude to my Palm(s)!
Portabase - In place of a Syncable Palm Memo-like application. Are there *any* other options? Portabase works, but it's clunky - I really miss my Memo app
Bookreader - As an image viewer. Fast, resamples pics for quality. I tried the sharp Photo Storage app but it was slower, didn't resample the pictures, and I couldn't seem to get it to work in rotated view.
HancomSheet
Textmaker - I just bought it, so HancomWord is on its way out
Sharp Dictionary and Translator
QPDF2
Opie Reader
ZEditor
ZSafe
ZStyle - For setting QTopia Application Fonts for Japanese support
Kino2 - for movies. I still use the original sharp musicplayer for MP3
Opera
Wellenreiter
Netactive - Qtopia bar icon that shows network traffic
Nano - Clone of Pico, my favorite CLI text editor.
Up Next:
I'm going to try ELOG to see how well it works for a media database, then I want to get Zbedic + Wikipedia going. When I get time to study again I'll have to re-sort the options for Kanji study programs - Nihongo(Kanji)Nirvana will make the list again for sure.
-
I'm using wikijserver( http://wikipedia.achterliek.de/index.php (http://wikipedia.achterliek.de/index.php) ) for reading the wikipedia.
I'm dreaming of having images for my wikipedia, but it would be to big.
BilliardZ is really great, I'm still trying to get a configuration where I dont have to move the queue after the first shot and where one team wins in the end. It's for school, where I can't really play.
And of course kapi, kopi, mplayer, konquerror (searching the static wikipedia doesn't work with opera at the moment), textmaker (bought it last week, waiting for my ir-keyboard), powermanga and xmms.

If you travel on an underground railway... anywhere (pretty much)... worldwide you will like ubahnnav.. I always have it loaded. Works well at 640x480 but the icons are a little small.
Great set of worldwide tube maps available.

Take a look at notez . . might be what you are looking for. Its worked as a memo replacement for me

TimWs qtreader now has flite support and works very nicely...my favourite software of the moment.

Speaking of ZSafe...
Have you tried to import the textfile created by ZSafe into PWM/PI? I can't get that to work. I'd love to switch to PWM/PI, because I like the interface better on the C3000. ZSafe doesn't take advantage of the full screen in landscape mode.

I took a look at Notez. It's a good start, but hardly feature complete. (No syncing ability).
I'm planning to do a more fully featured memo-like app as a warm up for a media database.

*Bonus*
Movie Shrink&Burn - http://www.ashampoo.com/frontend/products/...ession_langid=2 (http://www.ashampoo.com/frontend/products/php/product.php?idstring=0137&session_langid=2)
This is a PC application, but I've used it with great success to shrink large movie files town to pocket friendly sizes (some of which I played on the Z)
-
KO/PI
- The cat's meow in terms of Calendaring on the Z, hands down.
KA/PI
- The cat's meow in terms of Address books on the Z, hands down. Is there an echo in here?
PWM/PI
- Used zSafe for years, now I use this. It's vastly better, overall, depsite some odd quirks, imho. Since I have the source I'll likely do something about them, when they become annoying enough. (wink)
NeoCal
- Finally bought this simply amazing little guy, instead of using the unlimited use freeweare version. I've never looked for anything else.
StageOne
- Task list application that does percentage completion for you, supports multiple files, plus images and notes right in the ToDo. KO/PI is better than most ToDo apps, but this is still my favorite.
JustReader
- Found this on this uber-list. Great e-book reader!
QPDF
- Been using this as long as I've owned a Z. Once I figured out how to get it to run in landscape on the C1000 I was very happy! (snicker)
PortaBase
- Found this on this uber-list. Reminds me of the database app on the Psion, which I've sorely missed for years and years. Nice to have it back.
Opera
- Because it's better than any alternative I've tried. Haven't done the Debian/Firefox combo yet.
QKonsole
- Very nice support for larger fonts, full-screen mode, and the ability to remove most of the useless "window dressing", make this beat out Konsole, my old command-line tool of choice.
Tree!Explorer
- Found on this uber-list. VERY sweet app that I'll have to be registering, to have the "SendTo" style functionality.
SystemInfo
- Been using this as long as I've owned Z's, too. It still doesn't show my kernel version correctly, but that's the minorest of minor things in this excellent tool.
Memory Applet
- Used to manage swap with it, now it's just a nice indicator of my memory usage.
Kalarm Applet
- Because it's part of the suite. (grin)
Battery Applet
- Shows battery status in a little pop-up, instead of consuming the *entire* screen for something so simplistic.
BlueZ
- While not an app, per se, it is something I've installed, so it's included. Very slick bluetooth implemention that I'd love to do a little coding on, if'n I could piece it all together somehow.
Asteroids
- From the SL-5000, which runs on the larger screen very nicely. The "Menu" button even gives me shields, which *never* worked on the 5500.
NetHack
- At last I have this available again! It refused to run symlinked to the SD card, and I didn't have enough main storage to load it on the 5500. That's just no longer an issue. (grin)
Barrage
- Nice little kill everything game, in a just wrong sort of way. (snicker) Kinda like Lemmings was, in that regard.
Marbles
- Nice brain buster whose only "fault" is very tiny text. Doesn't affect playability in the least!
Mahjongg, Shisen-Sho, zIQ, zKnights, lTris, lGeneral, Go (SL-5500), BackGammon, Atomic, Word Game (SL-5500), Checkers, Mine Hunt (SL-5500)
Anything not explictly listed, I use the default apps for. Music, word processing, spreadsheet, photos, etc, etc. Haven't gotten 'round to looking for alternatives, yet.
-
Once I decided what I want in my Zaurus, should I install these applications in the Zaurus or in a SD card?
I also downloaded kdepin, but I don't know if it should be part of the ROM core or just in a SD card.
Thank in advance.
-

[div align=\"right\"][a href=\"index.php?act=findpost&pid=81619\"][{POST_SNAPBACK}][/a][/div]
It doesn't really matter. Install in main memory if you don't need the extra space, so you can take the card out and still have working apps.
-
Gotta go for the old apache, mysql and php combination. Along with a good text editor (currently using tkceditor for syntax highlighting) and phpwiki I have all the database, note taking, timeplanning apps I could wish for.

I've read with interest all the thread. Coming more from a business background, I found not much use to me on the more technical applications (I was probably a programmer in a past life, as I am "complicating myself" with a Zaurus), but found more and more business apps on your list. A couple of questions pop my mind:
1. What about Powerpoint, the viewer that comes with Hancom is very limited for real life business presentations. Is there any progress so far in this department?
2. I see much of the conversation do not reflect applications from TheKompany, I saw their site and it seems they have a lot of commercial applications. Is there any specific reason it is not mentioned here. In their site, they mention the SL-5500 which I have, but what about other models?

TextMaker: Word processing with all desktop features of MS Word and combatible to .doc.
Commercial 49.95$
Trial version also aviable.

Textmaker has been coming up on Ebay lately, in Linux (desktop version) form no less. I scored a copy for just $4.99, then asked the nice people at Textmaker if I could have the .ipk version and they obliged!!

Otto,
I've bought several of the theKompany's apps and overall they work quite well and they have pretty good support and email list too.
Think you can try out apps before buying....
I've used them on a 760/860/3000, and now my 3100...
HTH,
Mark

Stuff I use frequently: QPSword
Question, please?
Why QPSword vs JSword?
Is QPSword better?
Will JSword run on the C1000? (I know it requires Java which appears to be OK: http://www.users.on.net/~hluc/myZaurus/custom.html#java (http://www.users.on.net/~hluc/myZaurus/custom.html#java) )
What is the process of loading either QPSword or JSword on a C1000, please?
I really need to get one or the other loaded and running asap.
Thanks! doc

I have QPSword running on my C1000 but am not real happy with the way it looks and
it is quite old (2003).
JSword seems to be more current.
Will have to see to Java and then try JSword.

In testing OpenZaurus 3.5.4, I also ran across Dagger from the Sword project. Its available from the Sword project web page as well as in the OZ 3.5.3 feeds.
The interface is much improved over QPsword. although admit that I haven't tried JSword.

Which version would you recommend for the C1000?
Download
Source code
* dagger-0.9.3.tar.bz2
Binary packages for OpenZaurus 3.5.3 or Familiar 0.8.2
For StrongArm-based devices (iPaq 36xx/37xx, Zaurus 5500, etc.)
* Sword v1.5.8
* Dagger v0.9.3
For XScale-based devices (Zaurus C7x0/8x0, 6000, etc.)
* Sword v1.5.8
* Dagger v0.9.3
Also, is there any reason to believe that JSword would not run on the C1000
based on what you see in the Java available to the C1000 and the requirements
of JSword?
Thanks! doc

Absolute must:
KTrove. Surprised not to see this app in the list. Let you install applications in your card that run only in main memory. (not all but many) and yes i works.
ZEditor. Absolute must, try other text editors too limited. simple, fast, can access any file. Maybe the app I use the most. Thanks!
ZBEDic. Amazing dictionary tool, the amount of available dictionaries is great.
ZSolitaire. I still enjoy simple games while waiting.
zKnights. Cool chess
Now as a developer I like:
apache2-php5-mysqlclient package. Let me test what i code in ZEditor
The embended SQLite database in PHP is great, lots of power, I stopped using mysql which anyway was an old version.
For videos, music, images, docs etc.. I just use the ones that came with full cacko 1.23 (have a c1000) excelent stuff

- I used to use ktrove, but found it more limiting than just copying the files and softlinking them myself, which is all this is doing, but with a script. Or at least the version I used. (grin) I've also found that with Cacko's nearly 100MB main storage free (on a C1K) that I haven't needed to run as many things (read: none so far) from the SD card.
- I did, however, extensively softlink libraries and suchlike to SD with Cricket, my old SL-5500. Cricket simply wasn't usable without "installing" to SD 'cause there wasn't enough space on that little guy. I got every single thing except nethack to run from SD by manually softlinking, about 60MB of software, and kept nearly 12MB free in main storage for operational space. I never uninstalled any of that stuff, anyway, so it didn't matter that there were no scripts to help out in that regard.
- Just my half nibble...
-
Thank you for all the leads.. I'll be having a lot of fun playing with the software mentioned in this thread.
I took some notes:

Anybody having success with Frink? I think Frink might help unleash the motherbox in my c1000.

Depends on what you mean by success. It seems to work on my C1000, but it's so slow that I haven't attempted much with it.
-
It doesn't seem to do anything on my SL-C1000 (Running Cacko)
http://futureboy.homeip.net/frinkdocs/ (http://futureboy.homeip.net/frinkdocs/) reports:
Sharp Zaurus (despite the filename, this isn't ARM-processor specific--it's pure Java, and might work on other platforms that use the .ipk package format.) Note: I need help testing and improving this installation package. Please contact Alan Eliasen if you have experience with Zaurus installer packages. Hint for helpers: an .ipk file is just a .tar.gz file, so you can open it up and poke around, but I don't have a Zaurus to test on.
I don't have any useful output, so I can't help.. but if others can do more useful testing, then it sounds like it could help.
A separate thread talking about the application would probably be best.
-
thought I'd bump this thread as it's got lots of great tips!
