the site gets on average 4k - 7k hits per day (it was half that before the zaurus.com crash in November)... but the stats for the site show that it\'s been busy, both yesterday and today. Yesterday we got 59714 hits, and today we\'re already at 40746 hits. That\'s quite a jump from just a few thousand.
I\'ve checked around the various news sites to see if there have been any recent referrals... but nothing.
Mind you, I think it\'s great, but I\'m just wondering what\'s driving the traffic...

I think the people finally starting to realize that there\'s not much more to expect from Sharp (except great Hardware). They are bascially just _hosting_ zaurus.com/dev/board, but doing nothing else. You are doing much more for the Zaurus community - this is why this board also attracts developers like me. I already started to slowly fade out participation on both the zaurus.com/dev/board and the externe.net/zaurus/forum.

Mickeyl - i agree - its the best source for news and info..

I don\'t know how many people got an SL-c860 for Christmas, but that\'s why I\'ve been here.
-
This seems to be the place for the clamshell zaurus, but 5500 and 5000s are not getting much attention here.
-
Well. Honestly, I am getting cxx envy. the 5xxx had it\'s fun, but the clamshell does appeal to me with a bigger keypad and a wider assortment of ROMs available to it. If I had the money, off to a C760 I would go

When the Sharp site went down I went through withdraw and turned here. Before, I would check here from time to time but the majority of discussions seemed to be on their site and it kept my attention. Now that there is a lot more activity it keeps me interested and I check it more often than the Sharp site.

I first heard of this site when i heard about the SL-6000, since then, I\'ve been looking around the site, and i finally decided to join in. I don\'t have my zaurus yet, but i hope that will come soon...
Wether it\'s a 6000, or if I take the risk of no warranty with a 7x0.
I like to be extra careful with support and warranty, you never know when you have a non-techie girlfriend. :-P So far she\'s ruined my digital cam, and my old clié. Not to mention the few dents she\'s put on my clié... now that i think of it, maybe i DO need a ruggedized pda with her around...
i guess i have to pick between ruggedized pda+gf, or cool clamshell... hmmm... tough pick. what would you guys do? :-P
-
Sorry that was probably me.
Works been quiet today

keep the girl, and get the clamshell. just don\'t let her touch your Zaurus!
damn, my wife knows better than to go near my Zaurus (now if I could just figure out how to protect my Jeep!)
-
www.dynamism.com does provide warranty and support for their products. You just can\'t call Sharp directly for support. From what I understand, dynamism\'s support and warranty are really good.

Well my wife saw my Zaurus a liked it (she is not a techie) so I got her a 5500 used on ebay. She\'s yet to get interested in coming out here but she does use it alot as a PIM and to surf the net. The surprising part is I\'ve had to do very little for her with it she figured out how to flash it and has installed several packages on her own.

I knew this site existed before the big crash (not wallstreet the sharp/dev crash).
It was the first place I visited in an effort to find out what hapened to the Sharp site.
I was also really pissed at them for taking down community, just when I needed some files from there. Some friendly bod uploaded them here and saved my bacon. Sharp never offered an apology, or even a reason and I hate them for that.
I must admit, the Sharp site was my favorite mainly because of Spencer.
Now he has gone, nobody has stepped into the breach, and it doesn\'t seem as friendly in there anymore.
No question about it, Spencer *was* Sharp/dev.
Personnally, I now check this site before the Sharp site, so when the same question gets asked on both boards, I tend to reply on this one only. This makes people think that they get a better response over here.
I also agree with edl867, this site is more clamshell orientated (the home of x.11) and now I have one, it makes me prefer this site even more.
If this site didn\'t exist, then I may not have bought the clamshell at all.
Here we have moderators that are firmly committed to the zaurus, they even own at least one themselves.
Keep up the good work ORG.
Just my 2p\'s worth

I\'ve noticed a few times in the past week that spencer has been logged onto Sharp/Dev. Not sure if it\'s him or someone else from Sharp using his account. I will agree it is definitly not the same there now. Very few posts.

Offroadgeek: getting her to stop going for my car was easy... she\'s just attracted to gadgets even though she\'s not a techie. For her a PDA is a gameboy for grownups.
TAIM: I know about dynamism, it\'s just that... is it really worth all that extra money? :| For the extra $100 I could get a decent sized CF card. It\'s not just about warranty, but value.
ZBones: I have to agree with you, the moderators for the site are really great and helpful. Keep up the good work. I hope this site will also be a great home for people who buy the new 6000\'s

Yes, Spencer was great to have around, but, IMO, the community was more than one person. There are so many people who pitch in to help out to answer questions and post \"look what I was able to do\" examples. There are few if any questions that don\'t get an answer, even if the answer is a link to a previous thread with a reminder to try searching. I found the forums invaluable for making things work on my Zaurus.
Several months ago, I joined a simlar board dealing with IBM\'s Websphere. I tried using it for research and was amazed at the number of threads that would just dead-end or get no response. I came to realize that I was spoiled by the people in the Zaurus community.
-
The community is great here. Seems to be gaining ground. The fact we don\'t have to trust in sharp to keep this one going.
The reason for the comments about spencer, I think, is that he kept us informed about goings on at sharp/dev.
The community around hand held linux is great in general. The work being produced is great. I love having a handheld computer that can double as a pda
-
The other reason thatcomes to mind, and this may be just me. But it seems that the site trippled in speed not all that long ago. When this site started it took me so long to load a page that i never bothered to come because it was so damn annoying.
You\'ve got a great site here ORG, All it took was a reason for people to start coming (i.e. november crashes) and folks have spread the word.
-
I was really pissed at Sharp, because with a flick of the switch all of the information (thousands of hours of time in contributions) posted by the user community was gone. I\'m sure they had no intention of bringing it back up. Even though they did bring it back after some major negitive feedback, the fact that they dropped it in the first place just goes to show how much the guys in charge of Sharp US actually don\'t get it.
I do trust that the information I post here will not get trashed, I don\'t feel the same about my posts at the Sharp site.
-
I\'m here because it\'s much more comprehensive than the Sharp site, and Linux was built by enthusiasts, not corporations. That Sharp blew out their community group only shows that they are a corporation. The users here have provided me with more, better, and faster answers than I have ever gotten from /any/ manufacturer. Hopefully I\'ll be able to repay the community at some point.

It\'s not just you... that\'s one of the reasons why I wanted to do the server move a few months ago... the speed on the other host was terrible.

I\'ll try not to sound too cheesy now, but I think WE have a great site here... I just help maintain it.
-

I know what you mean. There were a number of posts on the old sharp/dev where i had found important answers that i couldn\'t afford to loose. The minute the site came back up I saved lll of the posts with information that was crititcal to me (two in particular) to my hard drive so iw ouldn\'t loose them.
O.R.G., I know what you mean and I agree. The sense of community on this site is realy starting to develope nicely. Lot\'s of friendly banter and lot\'s of help dished out all around.
-

Yes but you host it and have all the bills to pay :-(
The only two things I dislike is the fact that i often get \"logged out\" when revisting and that the forum is so sensible about topics you have read - it quickly marks them all as read when you go in and out of the forum and thereby the \"View posts since last visit\" looses it functionallity.
-
Unfortunately the zauruszone forum is still MIA, there was a lot of useful info there.
More developer/hacking stuff than the devnet. Shame.
-
Some of the traffic is my fault. I released Gentoo For Zaurus and posted in freshmeat and sourceforge and included a link to this forums.
-
Yeah, I think the X11 followed by gentoo have stirred up a lot of activity, and probably more than a few zaurus clamshell sales.
-

ahh.. that must have been it... it\'s only sites like those that drum up that much traffic...
don\'t be sorry, link all you want! the more traffic the merrier!
its good to see the new server can take a licking and not slow down
-
i remember back when we were slashdotted. when you had the very first ever real photo\'s of the sl-6000. now that was quite a slam in traffic. I bet somehow we could get a link to here from /. regarding Cacko Linux and GentooForZaurus. that would really bring in a lot of traffic.
-
I noticed right away that after zaurus.com went down the last time, this site picked right up, and seems to be where the zaurus action is.
Also, the X11 rom seemed to have sparked new discussions.
