Title: Cacko Rom 1.22 Lite Is Available!
Post by: maslovsky on February 04, 2005, 12:06:18 pm
Lite version is a special release of Cacko 1.22, which includes only a minimum set of programs and libraries and fits into 17 Mb. Everything else is available for installation from Cacko feed.

Download ROM here: http://cacko.oesf.org/downloads/rom/1.22/s...-1149040205.zip (http://cacko.oesf.org/downloads/rom/1.22/slc7x0-Qtopia-1.22-lite-1149040205.zip)

Have fun!

IMPORTANT:  This ROM requries a flash partition at least 17 MBytes in size!
Make sure to repartition your internal flash before updating ROM!

Installation:

    1. Extract the 3 files - initrd.bin tools.tar updater.sh - to the root of your CF or SD/MMC card.
    2. Make sure that Zaurus isn't plugged into AC power.
    3. Remove battery for at least 5 seconds.
    4. Replace battery (replace battery cover, lock cover), plug in AC power.
    5. Press and hold the "OK" button on the keyboard.
    6. Turn the power on, you should see the Japanese service menu.
    7. Now Plug in the Power Cord. (You will get an error if it isn't plugged in!)
    8. Select option 4 (flash/update).
    9. You then have four options (1. USB, 2. CF, 3. SD, 4. Back)
    10. Choose either option 2 or 3, depending on which media you put the files on.

    11. Select "5 Flash repartition", enter 17 when prompted for root partition size.
    12. Flash will be repartioned and Zaurus will reboot.

    13. Repeat steps 2-10 again and wait for the menu start menu.
    14. Now select "1 Install new ROM" and wait - Zaurus will reboot.

-------------

Release Notes:

This is the "Lite" version of Cacko ROM 1.22.
The only difference is that the following applications were removed and packaged into Cacko feed:

   - Addressbook
   - Datebook
   - FileSearch
   - Hancom Presenter
   - Hancom Sheet
   - Hancom Word
   - HelpBrowser
   - ImagePad
   - Kino2
   - Migration
   - Mirror
   - NetFront Web Browser
   - VPN modules
   - Opera Web Browser
   - Email
   - RecieveData
   - LUS ScreenSaver
   - TextEditor
   - ToDoList
   - Voice Recorder
   - Midnight Commander
   - Neocal
   - scmxx
   - tcpdump
   - iptables-base

This ROM uses 10 MB less of root partition and gives you and great flexibility - install only applications you want.
You'll have about 39Mb (100Mb for C760/C860) of internal flash free.

Note: Upon first Qtopia boot you will recieve empty screen instead of Owner Information dialog.
This is because Sharp addressbook application was removed from the ROM.
Just click Finish to skip this screen and add owner info later when you install PIM applications of your choice.

SWEET!

Now for the first nagging question. Just how much space will each of the excluded apps take in the non-squashfs file system? I know we still get some compression.

I looked at the list of what is missing and listed down what I would want to put on.

Hancom Word (Need to register TextMaker)
Hancom Sheet
Kino2 (Almost surprised this wasn't in the base  )
Opera
Screensaver (gotta have the cool fish!)
Neocal
Netfront (Never fails, I find a site that won't work in Opera that does in Netfront)

If the IPK size is any indication of the space the app will take on the Z, then even with what I thought was a short list, I might end up putting 7 megs back on the Z.

So, to reflash or not to reflash for just 3 megs is the question . . .

I'm sure I will, just because it is cool, but I would like to know if we can pre-guess how much space each excluded app will take on the Z.

Oh, and thanks a million!!!!  Too bad I can't donate that much.

Awsome, I like the sound of that.

I don't have time to devote to a full ROM, at least that's my translation of what my wife says.... But I think this should make it really easy to do a 'roll your own' type ROM.

I propose to install base stuff onto a lite ROM, tar it off and squash that stuff into a second squashfs so I've got everything I want but still at the minimum hit.

Excellent work Anton, thanks!

BTW: Are your proposed Hotfix A bits included ?

- Andy

Does anyone know how much the default Sharp ROM requires as far as flash partition size.  The only thing that has kept me from flashing Cacko so far is that I didn't want to go through the trouble of re-partitioning the flash.

Make a NAND backup first or download one of the virgin images from conics.net before you start.

If you ever want to do a NAND restore you don't need to repartition since the NAND image holds all the partitioning information.

You should find plenty of information on NAND backup/restore on the www.shirtpocket.co.uk website if you don't want to trawl OESF.

The Hotfix will also need to be applied to the lite ROM.  It was decided that the two ROMs should be kept to the same revision.

Enjoy!

Strange question. Of course reflash

Serousely, you'll need to try it for yourself - make a backup of existing ROM, flash lite version, install apps you want and then see if it saves you any space. Then decied if it's worth it or not...

What about the Japanese kernel for the lite version?

Can I just take it from the Japanese kernel for the full 1.22 package and will it work?

mmm seems lite version has problems installing apps usin add/remove software from feed to ram, like Kino2, netfront and others, but can be installed to sd oO, would it be some permission errorson the filesystem?

I have Cacko-lite + kino installed to internal flash from the feed.  Ugh!  The Packages file on the feed is not correct!  I'll fix it ASAP....

OK It has been fixed folks.  Please let us know if you have any other anomalies with the feed.

As an aside, for Sharp ROM users (eg us SL-6000L users who don't have a good ROM alternative yet  ), the seperated Netfront browser seems to work pretty well (except oddly I had troubles changing the homepage, but no big deal). Good for those Sharp ROM folks looking for an alternative browser.

Also, C300 users may appriciate a clean installation of Opera 7.25

I'm not sure why the Cacko feed doesn't want browsable directories like other feeds (probably bandwidth?). But you can always go to the Packages (http://bryandeluca.com/cacko/feed/Packages) file and copy and paste to do a direct DL to the PC.

For example, the Netfront package is netfront_3.1-lite-1_arm.ipk. Copy and paste the current feed URL (http://bryandeluca.com/cacko/feed/) in front of that package name, and you get http://bryandeluca.com/cacko/feed/netfront...-lite-1_arm.ipk (http://bryandeluca.com/cacko/feed/netfront_3.1-lite-1_arm.ipk).

You can also, if you want, do a network install just as well.

Hopefully this helps.

Bryan, how about we just copy and paste this whole post to the front page of the feed

Here is the reason I don't encourage downloading of individual packages.

A package feed is intended to have your Zaurus install software over the network with all the dependencies and all the goodies in one place.  If someone wants to install the packages manually that is their perrogative and they are able to do so with the current setup.  I was trying to reduce the number of "Where is the dependency for package xyz?" type questions and encourage people to use the feed the way it was intended.  As a side benefit it does reduce bandwidth use, but that was not my primary motivation.

Hello, I use the old full Cacko 1.22. On the Cacko-feed are now applications intended only for Cacko-lite (netfront, opera...).

This is not a big problem, but I would suggest to move these application in an extra feed and add this feed to cacko-light ROM by default.

So Cacko users see only the normal Cacko-feed and
Cacko-light users see both Cacko-feed and Cacko-light-feed. (I guess OZ works like this)

Greetings, Christoph Held

All the "lite" applications in the feed are labeled as such.  Look at the version information.  We could segregate the packages easily though.

In 1.21 there was an applet to control the screen brightness without having to use the Power&Light settings panel and without using the keyboard (for when you are in portrait mode). I can't seem to find it either in the feed or in the base ROM itself. Is it still available?

Thanks, that is  coolness!   I was running out of space on the applet/task bar when in portrait mode! Nice touch, merging the applets.

As one of the original proponents of the Lite ROM, I'd like to thank Maslovsky and the rest of the Cacko team (that is not really clear to me, who are actually part of the "Cacko team"?) for this excellent piece of work. Cacko just keeps getting better and better!

Hi, Anton and Stupkid (sorry, don't know your real name).
I got Cacko-Lite installed (that sounds cool.  Cacko-Lite).  And I was enjoying the hell out of it.  And then a funny error cropped up.  I de-installed TextMaker and then tried to re-install it, and I kept getting errors.  So, as a test, I de-installed a couple more apps, and couldn't re-install them.  Frustrated, I re-flashed Cacko and the error got even worse from there.  After installing two, maybe three Apps, the system wouldn't let me install anything anymore.  It would just return the same two errors.  One was vague - Ipkg can't complete.  Sorry.  The other wasn't much better - The name of this file contains characters that Ipkg can't read.  Please re-name.  I did some reading on the forums and, after putzing around for a little while, I thought that maybe it was a bad NAND block or two.  So I tried changing partition sizes, hoping that I could work around the problem.  The number of files that I could install before hitting the problem did change.  It varied from eight apps installable to as few as two or three.  Finally, I restored a NAND backup of my old Sharp ROM setup (with all of its myriad problems), and it seems to work ok (other than being the Sharp ROM).

The million dollar question is: What went wrong?  And why?

--Rich

Nope.  Haven't tried the full Cacko.  Did restore the old Sharp.  That seems to work, but I haven't really done more than (re)install one ipk, so I don't know what the deal is.  I started a new thread and stupkid's  trying to help me out.  He asked me to get him the output of ipkg from the command line.  I'll stop diverting this thread.

Its great! Thats the third Cacko I've flashed, but now I've more free space in the root than ever!

I've immediately installed Super Tux, now that I had so much space left.

But when I've installed the ToDo-List application, it looked weird, with big squares in the item-view:

Can you help me with this? I think it wasn't exaclty that way before, was it?

Hi,
I had also troubles with Cacko-feed (but Anton helped me much  )
1)take script given above by Stupkid
2)get all the feed (using this script) on hard disk of a PC-computer (computer
which is on the Internet)
3)copy all the feed to cf/sd-card (using a card-reader)
4)install apached (on Zaurus, from the taken feed)
5)configure ipkg

After this I have all the feed in my Zaurus (all was working a month ago,
I did not try newer versions of the feed).

To Anton M:
plese help me with patches to your kernel - please do not forget

Thanks,  Anton! I've already considered the reason to be a dependency with other Cacko/Qtopia-feed, not yet put into the ipkg dependency field, which is surely a horribly complex task to do for all the newly packaged Qtopia applications.

I'm sorry to say that meanwhile I've had another unwanted surprise with both Cacko Lisa, the light and the full version: when installing qtopia-advancedfm_1.0_arm.ipk, immediately after the shell prompt is given back, all fonts are gone from the desktop and the applications one will start, leaving Qtopia in an unusably state of being on a C700 device. With Cacko Elena, the installation of qtopia advancedfm 1.0 did not disturb anything, so I guess the bug targets a problem introduced with Lisa, the latest Cacko Qtopia ROM.

For myself, I'm now back to Elena, since I've been quite satisfied with it and am not sure why I should switch right now, other than the fresh cool background and icons. Please do not get me wrong, I appreciate your great work, and I'm absolutely with Cacko, its just the new features are not in my user scope, and I'm not in for more surprises like that with advancedfm right now.
