First of all, this isn't a complaint thread.
I was wondering how Quake was ported to pdaXrom, and how feasible it would be to bring other old games to the platform. For instance, Warcraft or Starcraft. I realize that space is a huge issue, but I ran Starcraft on a 133mhz/32mb laptop back in the day, so I don't see why the hardware couldn't handle it.
Of course, I do realize that SC and WC are both windows games, but wasn't Quake too?
-
The quake engine was released by ID software as open source and many derivative engines were built upon that source.
If you find worthwhile games which have been similarly released by the vendor, meet the hardware spec (i.e. don't absolutely need 3d acceleration) and are likely to be both playable and suitable to the PDAXROM platform then I'm sure you will get some keen porters... It also helps if you can still get hold of the data commercially for these games since it is very seldom that the companies completely open up the distribution/use on old games - I think this has limited the interest in porting things like Duke Nukem 3D - you just can't buy it in the shops.... (Kudos to Revolution software for releasing BASS that works with ScummVM).
-
Ah, gotcha. I knew iD licensed their engines, didn't realize the earlier ones had been opened.
That's a real shame, I would love to see a good RTS on this platform. Maybe I should write Blizzard and see what they have to say.

Hello,
if you want to play Warcraft II there is stratagus (http://stratagus.sourceforge.net/) in the unstable (http://www.pdaxrom.org/unstable) feed . It runs fine on RC8 and RC9.
Try it

Hey
What is the trick with stratagus ? I tried "astroseries" and "battle of survival" and both just freezes my C860 when I press "start new game".
I run them from X11, from inside a shell window ...
I am assuming that zaurus runs out of memory (and just hangs, which is rather lame)
I tried to run it before loading x11, but it complains about not finding a DLL (for mouse).
Any hint on how to make stratagus work ?
-
Can anyone with a good developer setup compile the last Visual Boy Advance, with fp emulation and executable stripping? Just to try it... maybe it will run a bit faster
-
oh yes please please please pleaseplease pleaseplease pleaseplease pleaseplease pleaseplease pleaseplease pleaseplease pleaseplease please !!!!!!!!!!
scoutme : no matter what option i tried, i never got faster than 60% or so of normal speed... Even if pdaxrom is getting faster and faster, i doubt a zaurus will be powerfull enough to emulate gba. :'(
BUT WE HAVE TO TRY IT ! I own a gba (the first one, not the SP version) and i can't see anything on it... The Z screen is so beautifull... Did you know Sharp produces the Nintendo DS screen ?

I´ve just set 32 MB of swap on my CF Card. Warcraft II and BoS run fine.

i only installed stratagus, swapon and load my wcII data on my CF Card : stratagus -d /mnt/cf/wcII/data, wait 20 seconds and it starts! no magic,
runs under debian on my c700, too
bye Denis

Thank you for compiling this.

I get
# stratagus -d /mnt/cf/war2/data
Maybe you need to specify another gamepath with '-d /path/to/datadir'?
#
any ideas?

FIXED
Had to run Wargus first to extract stuff out of the data files on the Warcraft CD, THEN copy the wargus generated data folder to the cf card

I'm having a problem with Wesnoth as well.
From this:
# stratagus -c /usr/local/share/wesnoth/
It starts to load, screen blanks, etc.
Then I get:
Font mapping not found: 'yellow'
Anyone?
-
You don´t need stratagus for wesnoth!
just Type wesnoth in a console
et voila!

Why does Wesnoth load up and say "Setting Video Mode to 1024x768x16"
If this was 640x480, would the Hotkey screen (And some of the other oversized screens) show up correctly?
Plays beautifully though, thanks for compiling it. I noticed they have directions on how to build it in OE, though it looks like they have it setup for an Ipaq/5500 w/ a 320x240 screen. They say that that version doesnt use Floating Point. Is this version compiled with No Floating Point or Soft Float?
I'd imagine using Wesnoth's own "Non-Float" would make it faster than the Soft Float. But I am usually wrong.

Do you guys have interesting in compiling another game openttd?
http://www.openttd.com/ (http://www.openttd.com/)
-
Command & Conquer Red Alert, Red Alert 2 and Tiberian Sun are all low cpu and graphic games, I would love to play a C&C game on my Z.
C&C seems to be quite an open source game, apart from and new versions of the game which need uber 3D cards.

It would be great to have OpenTTD for PdaXrom! Somewhere on this forum I saw a compiled version of OpenTTD, but it was for Qtopia..
-
I think the "Astroseries" games are crashing because they were originally made only for Windows. They never made an official release of that game for Linux, and thus, some other people around did. Their conversions might not be the very best, ya' know.
It would be cool if the "Astroseries" people actually made a Linux release. I think they were starting to head that way... But I dunno.

Just a quick notice that I informed the Wesnoth group of the port, and updated their downloads and Linux PDA page accordingly. The forum thread I put up there is here (http://www.wesnoth.org/forum/viewtopic.php?t=5433). They had a suggestion, and were rather enthusiastic. I hope nobody minds.
