Has anyone been able to do the 25MB partition to get the free 96MB using the TKC ROM for the 860? What are the steps and files needed? Thank you.
-
Hi 2devnull
Yes it is possible
Probably the easiest way is to download the cacko x11 rom tarball and extract to your cf / sd card and start the flash process. The first thing you will notice is that a menu pops up choose \"flash repartition\" and enter 25 in the box that pops up. It will cary out the repartion and reboot. You now need to run it again and flash the users partion or do it manualy via menu option 3. Obviously you will then need to reinstall tkc rom.

Any issues with doing this (like something stops working?)

Have you seen white SHARP screen? I just tried to do like that and seems to be my SL-C860 hanged up forever.

jurwit....are you referring to Richard\'s suggestion?
-
I can vouche for the Cacko X11 and Qtopia ROMS both successfully have partitioned, formatted, and installed on the internal flash of my c860. If you follow the flashing instructions you should then be able to have the proper partitions setup. Since I have never tried the TKC ROM I don\'t know what the installer is like, but once your flash is partioned you should be able to install the TKC ROM onto the 25MB root partition.
As far as Cacko X11 breaking things. It is installing a new distro onto your Z so you will end up with the default Cacko X11 software as opposed to the Sharp or whatever ROM you are currently running. On every ROM at a minimum PPP over USB has always worked. So, in a worst case you should be able to connect via USB to get to your Z.
Hope this was helpful.
Good Luck!

2devnull,
Yes, I am. I had troubles while installing tkROM on 25/96 partition after Cacko repartitioning made me using Richard\'s suggestion. I used updater.sh-slc860 and initrd[1].bin-tkrom-2.5.1-slc7x0

jurwit...did you manage to get this problem fixed and stil run TKC ROM on the 25 MB partition? I have the white screen with SHARP in RED and a \'3\' followed by Japanese characters. Any help is greatly appreciated. Thank you.

Sorry I hadn\'t notticed this before.
Once you have updated the partion with the cacko updater you must:
1) Do not install the cacko kernel/rom and then update with tkc (it wont work)
2) You must clear your user space iether re-using the cacko updater or via option 3 on the sharp menu.
3) You must use a sharp kernel if you have a previous cacko installation you need to load the std kernel/ or one from the ZUG downloads (with tasty add ons) first.
4) ONCE you have done all this you can now load the tkc rom.

2devnul,
unfortunately I experienced the same white screen , but I also did not clear the user partition.
Richard,
for installation I used two files:
updater.sh-slc860
initrd[1].bin-tkrom-2.5.1-slc7x0
z Image is in the third file zimage (which is not for c860)
which kernel to load for c860?

ok, mine work now. I did the Option 3 in the Sharp menu and it worked. The three files are used were the updater.sh from cacko, the initrd[1].bin-tkrom-2.5.1-slc7x0 from proto and the tools.tar from cacko. I put all those files on the root of my SD card and first did the flash partition to 27 MB and then flashed the ROM.
Now, I have the TKC ROM running on the partitioned C860. When I look at the System Info-]Version tab, under Linux Kernel it states \"Version 2.4.18-rmk7-pxa3-emb. Compiled by: (sash@sash). therefore, I am assuming I am using sash\'s kernel. however, I would like to try one of the faster kernels but I do not understand the differences between all of them and which ones are tested to run on the C860 (e.g. Sukoshi, Javaboy, Sash, etc.)
-
2devnull, I tried to repeat what you have written here on my C860 but I failed. Either I am doing something wrong or you did not write something in you last message. Could, you, please write step by step what you did to get tkROM,

The steps I took was exactly as stated here:
http://www.cacko.biz/index.php?showid=2&menuid=1 (http://www.cacko.biz/index.php?showid=2&menuid=1)
The only difference I made to use the initrd[1].bin-tkrom-2.5.1-slc7x0 instead of the cacko one.
AND, big AND is to do the Sharp Menu step #3 as Richard has pointed out (you can do this at the very last)
It should work after this!
-
T2devnul, THANK YOU. I did it. The first mistake was I was doing Sharp Menu step# before installing not after. Another bad move was I used cacko X11, not cacko qtopia so I stopped on touch screen positioning. Now it is great, I have tkROM installed.

No problem! Thanks should go to Richard or I would have also still been stuck since I cannot read Japanese and not daring enough to just execute menu options without knowing what it does. Another thanks to Sash, Proto, b2bpro and the others who helped everyone out who provided the ROM and who provided guidance. Now I wish someone can provide a list with all the kernels that works on the 860 and what the difference between them are. I have a Socket wifi card and would love to get the wireless sniffing extentions working.
-
Unless sash has changed things since I last looked the kernel in the qtopia packages is the std kernel. As far as I am aware the only difference between the 760 / 860 kernel is the usb storage. As you are using the tkc2.51 rom (which has this element built into the zImage) you should be O.K to use one of the two kernel I have posted to the ZUG one has wireless extensions only (for kismet / Wellenreiter) the other has this plus pre-emptif / overclock ptaches. I stress the word SHOULD be o.k I havvn\'t got a 860 so haven\'t tried but it won\'t kill your Z just flash the previous kernel if it doesn\'t work.
Let me know
Richard
-
Richard..I have a few questions.
1) Are there any known side effects of using your kernels?
2) What is the pre-emptif / overclock ptaches kernel?
3) If I use the pre-emptif / overclock ptaches kernel, what risks am I taking and are they proven risks (i.e. has the risks been realized by anyone). Does the battery discharge faster with this kernel?
4) You mention in your write-up of the kernel that there is a correction for the XScale PXA-250 cache errata bug. I thought the c760/c860 has a XScale PXA-255, so is this still applicable?
-
2devnull
1) There are three kernels available a)One by javab0y that adds wireless exstension only (no risks) My kernel as above + pre-emptif + cache errata on(this allows apps to start up faster / no risks) c) My kernel as above plus overclock (This speeds up the device but may overheat the processor / some risk)
2) See above but you can read a lot more about it by searching here
3) None that I know of / yes the battery will drain faster but not much
4) Yes the 760 /860 use a PXA-255. I was requested to include it so did not sure if applicable or not but with it turned off device runs faster but may crash according to kernel source notes. (Han\'t for me so far)

Richard,
After I installed you kernel (the one without the overclock), my 860 freezes up when the displays dims (this is after leaving it for about 5 minutes or so), maybe just before suspend or when trying to suspend. The only way to recover is to pull out the battery. BTW - this hapends when the Socket Low Powered card is in or not. Any ideas?
-
2devnull,
I understand you have installed
1) zImage.bin from Wireless_preemp_cache_on.rar
2) initrd[1].bin-tkrom-2.5.1-slc7x0
3) where did you get updater from?
Can\'t find proper sharp updater.
jurwit
-
i used cacko updater. proto updater would work alsp, just needed cacko to do the partition. Also, if you have already installed the ROM, you can just flash the zImage without re-flashing the ROM, therefore remove the initrd.bin file from your SD or CF card. The wireless preemp kernel did not work for me, it kept locking up my system.
-
BTW - I am using the javab0y kernel until Richard can find out what is wrong
-
2devnull
No I can\'t think what would be causing the lockups other than some people have mentioned usb storage device problems with the pre-emptif kernels.
I will build a kernel against the 860 settings with just the wireless patches in place if you wouldn\'t mind testing it for me ? This will show wether I have a fault in my build structure. If it works I will then add the other elements one at a time to see which is causing the lockups (maybe the cache errata which isn\'t included in the overclock version that I use but thats on a 760.
PM me your email address if you want to try this out but please just say if you\'d rather not.
Richard

Richard...I don\'t mind at all if it would not brick my device. Once there is a way to recover, I am technical enough to follow the instructions and reserect if needed. I will PM you my email.....thanks.

I succesfully installed tkROM with this zImage (from Wireless_preemp_cache_on.rar). By now installed WLAN CF cards (ASUS and PRETEC) without problems. I rebooted. Everything works great. I prepared the system like that:
updater.sh-slc860
initrd[1].bin-tkrom-2.5.1-slc7x0
zImage.bin from Wireless_preemp_cache_on.rar. (Is it javab0y kernel ?)
I am going to install Anycom Bluetooth card.
I can say it behaves better than with cacko kernel. I was unable to install WLAN so fast in case of using cacko kernel.

Jurwit,
It looks like you have everything going well. The zImage you are using is Richard\'s, which will confirm that it works correctly with a 860. Now the only difference between your set up and mine is the Socket Wifi Low Power card I am using. I am not sure if this causes the lock-up because I could not get it to connect using Richard\'s kernel. Maybe it has to with some modules that got loaded when the card was inserted. Anyway, glad to hear your setup is working for you. What differences (performance wise) are you readily noticing?
-
2devnull, I said only that I have installed WLAN cards without problems. As far as general performance is concerned it is too short time to say something. In general it is pretty fast. Now I am fighting with Ambicom Bluetooth card. Looking for applet for Qtopia (the best for existing Network program). I don\'t like to turn in on/off using commands. I saw it in cacko qtopia, but for tkROM it requires to add something.
