Pinned to get exposure (no, you still aren't allowed to get naked).
Report bugs and quirks you run into.
For now your link seems 404.
Edit: fixed it for great justice.

I also fixed it - now it's the official kino2 link

great, thanks. and I figured out how to play what I want: 480x640 full screen landscape on 6k. I'm slow please bear with me if you've already known this.

This might/should be 6k specific
Code: [Select]
Advanced options
options for maplyer: -vf rotate=1,scale=480:640
gives me the desired result

selecting "scale to screen" = passing "-fs" to the mplayer, vedio playback is still 320x240 or 240x320

btw, mplayer_1.0.1-1 is available on atty.jp , haven't benchmarked against 1.0.0-1 myself.

If I install the new mplayer (I'm using Cacko 1.22 on C750) it adds several Megs instead of replacing the existing mplayer. Is this intended? Or can I replace the old mplayer files manually with the new ones?

Few observations about the new release:

1. Playlist loads much faster and positions on top as it should -
great since this was a major problem with previous release

2. Kino is even more aggresive in terms of taking over the keybard - after I start kino playlist (mp3) and then either opera and/or bash zaurus does not respond to any keystrokes which makes kino2 unusable unless you only want to listen to music. This is with cacko light on sl860.

Yes, software scale (scale=480:640) should work with fbdev driver, although performance won't be as good as with w100 driver. Will try to include this in version 0.4.3.  BTW, check if it's -vo or -vf

Yes, this option only works with w100 and bvdd drivers.

Yes, unfortunately, one cannot replace existing binaries in the ROM. You have a couple of options:

 - Install mplayer to SD card
 - Reflash with 1.22 Lite ROM version and only install packages you want

Here is a workaround - toggle playlist after playback starts, that should release the keyboard. I'll try to fix this issue permanently in 0.4.3

Maslovsky, I noticed on your screenshots page that you've managed to get Kino (or Mplayer) to recognize IDv3 tags. Does this depend on what Mplayer version we're using? And is there any way to get IDv3 tag recognition in future releases of the 6k-compatible Mplayer?

The vedio filter (software scale) is -vf (similare functionality as -vop, which is obsolete). I refered to the mplayer online manual.

-vo is vedio output, which will auto selec fbdev in 6k, won't it?

Are you sure you have MP3 tags in your files? Do other programs show them?
Also, check if you have mplayer.conf file somehwere and delete if if you find it.

Yep, I'm a meticulous "tagger," so the files are properly tagged in every field. And there's no mplayer.conf file -- I know this thanks to the handy grep app that you wrote.

I haven't got any other application to recognize the tags, but so far Qtopia Media Player is the only app I've tried them in other than Kino.

Maybe I'm using a version of IDv3 tag that's too old/new for Mplayer to process correctly.

mplayer only recognizes version 1 of mp3 tags, that maybe your problem. Make sure you have both versions present in your files.

Regarding AAC - run mplayer with -v (verbowse) parameter and paset output here. I may be able to add support for AAC tags to kino2 if mplayer parses them:

Code: [Select]
mplayer -v -identify your_aac_music_file

There's a couple of OSS libs that read ID3v2 and APEv2 tags, want me to investigate?

Well, you can, but I will not add this to kino2 anyway, only if it gets merged into mplayer code. I don't want to complicate kino2 even more - I want to keep it a font end to mplayer.

more feedbacks from 6k users:

1)screen is painted after playback. have to open something up or rotate to refresh the screen or fumble around to find the correct button. no biggie, but kinda annoying.

2)what's the erasor? button next to "-" and "up" buttons for? Everytime I click it the kino GUI freezes. I'm able to open the console to kill kino2. The icon is still on the bottom bar even after i killed kino2. However the next click of that icon bring's kino2 back alive.

3)I'd like to see a toggle in front of "options for mplayer". So I don't need to delete and retype the whole thing I pass to mplayer when I test different combinations. currently i put a "#" infront of my advanced options to deactivate it.

4)the -vf scale=480:640 maybe quite a stretch for 6k without hardware acceleration or overlock.  let scale=360:480 maybe more realistic under the current status.

5)it took 1-2 sec to load the "preferences" page, is this normal?

The scaling issue is a bit depressing.

Worse, i don't quite undestand how these things are done on a 6k.  For example--if I want to play doom, i use the "zoom" feature  which presumably executes some qcop stuff I haven't looked up and re renders the screen to 320x240.  Is this done the same way scaling in mplayer is done? I understand that mplayer scaling is a matter of remapping 1/4 vga to vga, for example. Does the "zooming" simply do the same kind of remapping to a vga screen, or when zoomed is the Z actually drawing a qvga display without any intermediate steps?

I realize this is imprecise, but I'm not sure what if any difference there is,and thought that maybe if zooming made the 6k a real qvga device that kino could benefit from using that feature.

This happens for me too when I run player with fbdef video driver, even on C750. Will see what I can do...

This button removes all items from the playlist. And it even works for me

Yes, the preferences GUI is pretty complicated, so it takes a while for QT to build it and then load with settings...

Playlist frustration solved!

Every time I opened a playlist, Kino2 would shut down after listing the songs.

I figured out that if I use the Enter key to select the play list, Kino2 will shut down after it imports the playlist. If I use the space key it is happy. (I often do everything with the keyboard, never pulling the stylus out.)

Very odd, but maybe it is a Qtopia thing. Just thought I'd point it out in case others find the same issue.

Thanks for all the hard work on improving this application! It works now without any problem fullscreen on my Sharp ROM SL-C760.
I am particularly pleased that I can use Kino to listen to streaming audio. I was able to enter a URL from Shoutcast and listen to it even at 128 kps.
After entering a URL, the audio stream is added to the playlist. When I save the playlist, I see that the URL has been added to the file, but when the playlist is opened again after re-starting the application, Kino is unable to import the URL into the playlist (only my local audio files appear). I would really like to see the playlist feature better support audio streams.
There has been much discussion in the past about the absence of a good program for listening to streaming audio on the Zaurus. I hope to see this feature improved in a future release.

Hi,

it would be very nice to see a kino2 version which displays album covers during mp3 playback. eg. if kino2 finds a picture file named like the album id tag in the same directory. The Archos PMA430 player does this - its great!

I'm sure you'd do a fine job with that too but that's not what I had in mind. It just seems like after you display one picture (while the music is playing) it is probably not too hard to put a loop around that with some timer so every few seconds you change the picture. And I'm not aware of any other zaurus app that does something like this so I stand by my comment that it would be nice to see - of course you decide what to spend your time on and I do appreciate the great job you are doing no matter what you decide about any particular request/suggestion.

I agree - displaying album covers is a proper enhancement for a mp3 player, playing slideshows is a job for image viewers.

Have you ever used Apple's iPhoto? One of the most attractive features it has is to play songs from iTunes during the slideshow. While no one would argue that iPhoto is a mp3 player it is still true that having ability to play songs does enhances its primary role of a great image viewer/organizer.
In this particular case (kino) it just seems integration will already be there - all you need is loop and one option to specify how frequently to change the pics. Another example of nice integration where the sum is better than its parts are kopi/kapi/ompi apps - the attraction of all these apps is again in integration with siblings.
But don't worry - even though iPhoto has a 'iDVD' button I don't plan to suggest Maslovsky should implement burn to dvd feature next .

I've been thinking about it a bit more, and I had the following idea:
While it's all nice and dandy to restrict the scope of your app to an mplayer front-end, it's kinda counter-productive to market it as a general media player, isn't it?
Basically the problem is that mplayer is really designed to be a video player, not a music one. They hacked ID3v1 tag support already, but it shouldn't even be in there. Ideally you'd use a different lib to read those, but that's both out of your focus, and too time-consuming, apparently. Any ideas? I'm all out

That's brilliant. Please do not make it filename dependent (just display whatever pic is in the directory). Another nice thing about APE and ID3v2 tags is that they can be extended to include picture information (although I hate people who embed tags in them directly. Hate hate hate). I'll shut up about tags now, I promise

It might also be a good idea to have ready-to-use packages for all the supported architectures, so people don't get confused.
How is the situation when installing on top of cacko, which already has kino and mplayer, but not listed as packages. Can you just dump the new version on top?

I agree - displaying album covers is a proper enhancement for a mp3 player, playing slideshows is a job for image viewers.

I have it running on my c3000 running the sharp kernel with the v17g kernel updates from tetsu. I installed the mplayer with IWMMX, the C300 video driver and the Kino2 0.4.2 ipk with no issues.

Hi, Kerensa,

I downloaded a kernel image from [a href=\"http://tetsu.homelinux.org/zaurus/kernel/v17g/]http://tetsu.homelinux.org/zaurus/kernel/v17g/[/url],
including zImage-v17g-C3000.bin, kernel-modules_v17g_arm.ipk, and updater.sh.c3000. Is it the kernel you are using now? Since I can't read japanese, could you tell me the steps to update the kernel on C3000? Thanks a lot!

Kerensa,

I too would greatly appreciate some instructions on getting these kernel patches installed.

Are these required to run these optimized versions of mplayer?
I get a 'cannot use video device' error when -vo is set to /dev/bvdd. I installed all three packages and use everything "default".

Thanks.

Another missing feature is to add all files in a directory to the playlist. Or to allow multiple selection in the file selector box. It is very annoying to put some files to a playlist.

Yes, just click the + button while the folder is selected.  However, this doesn't work with a directory depth of greater than one, which would be nice.  My music is stored Artist/Album/Songs, so if i want to add all of one artist to playlist it requires a directory traverse.  Not a big deal, though.

Hi,

it would be very nice to see a kino2 version which displays album covers during mp3 playback. eg. if kino2 finds a picture file named like the album id tag in the same directory. The Archos PMA430 player does this - its great!

Silvio

This is interesting idea . I will see if Qtopia label widget can display a picture along with text. If it does, that can be implemented relatively easily...
[div align=\"right\"][a href=\"index.php?act=findpost&pid=67852\"][{POST_SNAPBACK}][/a][/div]
I took a look into the sources - as a first step you may assign the cover image to the background of the label control (backgroundPixmap()). Later on you could put two label controls in the main view and hide one of them until a cover image is available.

Silvio

Ah yeah, that's a bug, really. I never noticed because I just rsync a flat directory on my desktop where I just copy a memory card's worth of music.

No, that's not a bug - I'm not adding subfolders intentionaly because if they have links it may end up into infinit loop.

I'm not certain, whether it fits here at all, it could as well be a KO/PI issue.
From time to time, after using Kino2 for a longer period of time, KO/PI won't show up again. Only way to get it back to work, is a reboot (feels almost like windoze). I can't tell if it did happen with "old" mplayer, which was shipped with cacko 1.22, but now, KO/PI is often(not allways) disabled after a long Kino2-session.
Meanwhile, i am trying to avoid the problem, by not closing KO/PI before starting Kino2. This way KO/PI is still accessible after, or even during the use of Kino2.

May be one of maslovsky/Zautrix can figure out, what's wrong with using both of the best apps around.

TIA,
j.

Yes, it is a feature request! And I have another feature REQUEST:

I bought my C3000 with the remote control earphone. It is nicely integrated with the Sharp's default music player: the functions of all buttons are supported by the music player and the power management works greatly too. However the default play cannot play OGG file which is my favorite because even VBR-encoded MP3 is still not as compact as OGG with the same sound quality.

I thoroughly tested the music play function of kino2 and found out the following problem:

1) The remote control earphone CE-RH2 has a MUTE function supported by its left wheel: scrolling this wheel up and down controls music volume and pressing this wheel switch MUTE status. Kino2 does not support the MUTE function from remote control yet.

2) There is an option in Kino2's preference dialog which can turn off LCD display when playing music. This is espeically useful when C3000 is used as a portable music player with its lid is closed. But if music play stopps, LCD display is turned on even when the lid is closed. This is apparently what we don't want. I think Kino2 should be able to detect the status of the lid and decide that: a) if the lid is closed, never LCD display should never be turned on no matter music is being played or not;  If the lid is open, then the current feature of controlling LCD display makes sense: turn off display when starting playing music and turn on display when finishing playing music. I noticed that Sharp's default music player can take care of this point very well.

After above two issues are solved, I can completely swith to kino2 player and use my C3000 as  a portable music player  since it also supports a variety of music files, even FLAC, based on mplayer.

Another requested feature is the display of tag information of music file, such as MP3, OGG and FLAC. I guess right now kino2 uses some default widgets to display tag information, so it cannot display Asian characters all of them are displayed as empty squares. It would be very helpful to use UTF-8 encoding and let user select which fonts to use to display the playlist and the tag info. This is very much like what KDE-PIM/PI does. This method works well even on the not-fully-englishlized OS on my C3000.

Thanks a lot!

There is no way for me to detect if lid is open or closed, at least on my C750. The same key code comes with lid close and open events.

Did you select proper locale for MP3 tags in kino2 preferences?

Like the new version its slicker than the old one.  May I make a few sugestions for the next version?

- clear list function aka OP2 to remove all files from the playlist
- add all Music / Video again aka OP2
- Movie playback without flicking back to the playlist between files

I have been using my Z in my car as a sterio ever since my CD player got nicked.  I built an amplifier, PSU and got a nice facier from Halfords to pu it all in which worked great.  Im now using a 750 with kino2 and get a loud click between each track in the playlist.  It doesnt happen in OP2 on my 5500 can this be resolved at or is it "built in" to the way kino calls mplayer ?

In any case Kino2 is improved over OP2 which tendes to crash in long AVI files.

PS What does Kino stand for ?

I think you can detect the launch and operation of kino2 by remote conotrol earphone, right? If so, it is most likely that user uses remote control to control kino2 to listen to music, and it's safe to turn LCD off as soon as kino2 starts.

Did you select proper locale for MP3 tags in kino2 preferences?

I set both locales to UTF-8, this is why I can see each asian character is displayed as a square, which means the encoding is correct. The only thing is to allow user to select the correct asian fonts, like kdepim/pi does. In kdepim/pi, after locale is set to utf-8, if the display fonts are the default japanese fonts, many asian characters are displayed as square. After selecting the right fonts, the display becomes correct.

I see now, you need to be able to select a different font for the playlist and main display.

Hi I am just coming up to speed with Kino.  A basic question: how to scale pictures/movies to 640x480 on a C860?  I see references to a "scale=640:480" option for mplayer, but not sure where that is invoked.

Basic question I know, but have looked for a FAQ et all!

C860
Cacko 1.22a
Mplayer 1.0pre5-3.4.2 from mplayer-w100_1.0.0-1_arm.ipk
Kino2 v0.4.2

playing AVI - either full screen or unexpanded.

If "I" key is pressed, Kino2 no longer responds to ANY keyboard input at all.

Allowing AVI to play to completion returns to Kino2 with File Info box open. Now OK or Cancel keys work to close box.

Repeatable every time except -

Intermittant when Kino2 stops responding to keyboard AVI will freeze or display will go to total "white out". C860 does not respond to right rear on/off. Display does not shut down when top closed. Only option is pull battery & reboot.

Happens both on battery & AC.

Also noticed that "O" does not bring up On Screen Display controls. Doesn't seem to do anything at all.

And Mplayer from console command line reports "parse error at line 1870" in codecs.conf file, BTW.

I first went to that URL but got a "User LogIn" screen. Seems to me a little bit much to have to establish & keep track of *another* user ID just to submit a bug report. Don't mean to sound unappreciative, but can't something be arranged so that we can report the occassional bug somewhere without such account stuff?
