Linux 2.6 is looking pretty good on the 7x0 series these days... It's much more stable and smoother than 2.4; is there a near future prospect?
-
That would be nice-- ALSA rocks over OSS!

I think the problems with 2.6 is that there are no source for the sd card and ati drivers.
So porting these drivers to 2.6 involves reverse engineering and the like. I'm not sure that someone has completed this yet.
see this thread (https://www.oesf.org/forums/index.php?showtopic=9157&hl=2\.6+kernel)

I think that the "compile a pdaXrom for yourself" guide will be available in the not very far future, so if you feel like you have an awful lot of time, you will be able go ahead and try to get 2.6 working with pdaXrom.

You're all a bit confused.
Some facts:
* Kernel 2.6 works _very_ good on C7x0 thanks to the OpenZaurus kernel hackers, including the (unaccelerated yet) W100fb and SD/MMC.
* SD won't be possible on the SL5000 and SL5500 unless someone with huge expertise dives into the locomo interface and gets the NDA documents from Sharp.
* Alsa or OSS is not a matter of generic kernel, but of drivers. At the moment, many PDA sound drivers are still OSS, because someone has to write alsa drivers.

Ok, but ALSA still beats the pants offa OSS...

That sounds good. Although there does not seem to be one single patch to apply that allows to compile a working linux-2.6-kernel. Maybe the new 2.6.11 has more support for ARM in general and for the zaurus.
2.6 might also mean the use of udev instead of devfs.
-
Hello again,
I recently installed oz-3.5.3-pre, and they seem to have a working 2.6-kernel. Maybe using that kernel is a way to bring 2.6 to pdaxrom. It uses udev.

SD card working?

SD card working?
I don't know. Since i do not own a sd card, this has not been an issue for me. But this question implies that this is a major concern for pdaxrom. Maybe i find a way to check it, and report back.
-
SD mounts fine.
-
SD card working?
Not yet with the SD card i have. The card is recognized, the partition is recognized, too, so i will just have to find the correct device under /dev, and mount it then.
The in-kernel-support is there (modules). SD cards are handled by the mmc subsystem, i guess.
-
Edit fstab, it looks like a mistake crept in - remove the line which says 'dev/mmcda1' and leave the one marked for the 2.6 kernel

The fstab contains both entries for the 2.4 and the 2.6 device nodes - why shouldn't that work ?
-
No idea, but it doesn't mount my SD card with both entries there. I removed one and then it works. I'm open to suggestions.

Me too

Hi everybody, for the ones who are interestd in kernel 2.6 for the zaurus, at the openzaurus homepage is the following link
http://www.rpsys.net/openzaurus/ (http://www.rpsys.net/openzaurus/)
This kernel was released for Opie OZ 3.53.
Could somebody give some tips to modify the kernel rule of pdaxbuilder to build this src/patches.
Is there something else to be done, to pack a pdaxrom image using this kernel?
If I can, I will be glad to be usefull.
Best regards
Carlos
