Title: Are Cacko Apps Legal?
Post by: marshmn on February 21, 2005, 09:17:03 am
Hi,

I was looking through the release notes of Cacko 1.22 and I notice that there are statements such as:

   - Using Opera 7.25 - stable release from from SL-C6000
   - Updated NetFront to version 3.1 (from C3000)
   - Added FileSearch utility (from C3000)

So, if I'm to understand right, Opera 7.25 has been taken from the official SL-C6000 ROM, and included in the Cacko release which can be used by SL-C860 users?

But is this legal?

I'm just thinking that if I bought a SL-C860, that doesn't give me the legal right to use apps which come with a SL-C6000 does it? (Assuming these apps are not freeware?)

Matt

Opera is a poor example for your point as IBM distrubutes Opera for the Zaurus freely.  As for NetFront and the File Search tool, I am personally unsure of the licensing.

That's certainly interesting. I didn't know that you could download later versions of the Opera browser for the Zaurus - when I checked the Opera website (www.opera.com), I couldn't see any Zaurus version available there... where is this available from?

Does anyone know if the other apps available in the Cacko ROMs are distributed freely, or legal in some other way?

Do a search - someone linked to the IBM posting before.  But really, if you're not comfortable using them, don't.
