Title: Socket Low Power Wireless Card
Post by: nilch on February 24, 2005, 05:04:33 pm
I see that the Socket Low Power Wireless CF Card seems to be out of production and out of stock everywhere (incl Amazon).

Missed one ebay bid and I have been since biting my fingers off for missing it.
Is there any other low power wireless cards (CF) that anyone is aware of - and if yes, any good deals on it ?

My recently bought Ambicom works very well, but does consume power like a hog.

Not sure if they do this particular one, but they are quite clueful and might be able to help, they were very good when I was trying out PCMCIA memory cards and had one on eval.

Don't get too caught up on the "low power" desgnation on the Socket cards.  My recollection (though this is from memory, someone correct me please) is that the low-power feature requires driver support and the Z didn't have a supporting driver.

Now this may have changed with the current drivers; not my area of expertise.

You can get Symbol CF card (identical to Socket) off ebay for about $30 these days.

agreed, there's quite a few socket or symbol cards; a lot of people don't list things properly, so you need to try a mix of "socket wlan", "symbol wireless" and variations to be sure to find what you're looking for. I also missed a Senao one, which is a pain.

still hard to work out what's the best, for both range, for WPA compatibility (seems to me only socket/symbol support it), and battery life. If anyone has done a compatibility, feature and power-consumption comparison table, I'd love to know! I did find one but it's more for PC/Linux, but useful nonetheless:

http://www.seattlewireless.net/index.cgi/HardwareComparison (http://www.seattlewireless.net/index.cgi/HardwareComparison)

The discussion of the
uber card (http://www.seattlewireless.net/index.cgi/HardwareComparison#head-e14adb783e898a1b6f26c452121ec6259b1bac74) is quite interesting.

Actualy symbol/socket linux driver doesn't support WPA. Currently only hostap drivers are available for Zaurus, which support WPA.

Thanks Maslovsky for your suggestion. I did indeed jump in and bid for a Symbol Networker card from ebay and won it. It should be on its way.

Currently my Netgear card lasts a dismal 10 mins bfore my C750 is out of battery power. Hope the Symbol improves the performance.
I can live without the WPA support for now

A big thanks to Maslovsky for your suggesting the Symbol Wificards.

I started using the new card and WOW! what a difference in battery consumption.

The range is still the same - i.e. good - I haven't benchmarked by feet or meters, but the power consumption is extremely good.

Again by my benchmarks - the earlier Ambicom card that I have would just last one 'large soup' lunch at byrant park with the public wifi that they have out there and by the time I was fininshed so was the battery in my C750 (fully charged to begin with).

Now with the Symbol Spectrum Networker card, I have gone thru a soup and sandwich, or even one of those large tasty (but messy) Moeshe's Falafel and a coke and still have enough battery power to do some surfing and email checking (my company has blocked external emails) and then close down (nearly 30 mins spent at Byrant park all in all) otherwise I would get marked at office too long lunches.

Thats a big difference.

Nilch, the wifi card that you have is this one: New Symbol Compact Flash CF WiFi Wireless Card 802.11b ???
I've found it in ebay. It's really cheap. If it works ok with cacko1.22 i'll buy two of them.

And they ship Worldwide!!! Amazing.

You havent given any link, but the one I have is the Spectrum 24 Wireless NETWORKER (802.11b | 11 mpbs) card. It says "For Pocket PC PDA's" on it, but that doesnt matter.

I think the model is called N410
It is This Card (http://www.symbol.com/products/wireless/la4137.html)

It does work out-of-the-box as they say, on my C750 with Cacko 1.22 lite.

I just bought one of these cards last week for my 5500 from that same seller, and it is indeed the famous Symbol/Socket card.  It works great!      My Z now gets better reception than my Powerbook's built-in Airport.

It may be on the way to you.
The time really depends on the shipping and the distance. The dealer is good. Be patient, it will reach.

I am a new comer using C860, just now was installing the Cacko 1.22, like it very much, it is amazingly good. But I need some help on how to use the Symbol Wifi card here to surf the internet? When I afirst insert the this wifi card, the name of the card appeared at the bottom of the screen, but then disappear, but under the "wireless monitor", it did not detect any wireless device, appreaciate your help.

Thank you very much.

I've just won one of these cards on ebay.
I installed wellenreiter and kismet because I knew it was arriving soon.
Had it posted to work, so when it arrived today I plugged it straight in and fired up wellenreiter. It instantly found loads of networks.

Happly I tried to run kismet, what the heck is that all about? I have no idea what it was up to or how to make it do anythig useful.
might have to resort to the docs...

out of interest, the card seems to be running "orinoco" drivers, is this right or can I get better ones elsewhere.

cheers.

Kismet doesn't work with that card. We have to use wallenreiter instead.
