Title: Finally got a Zaurus
Post by: edarotag on January 14, 2004, 08:46:34 pm
I ordered the sl-5600 from amazon a few days ago and it finally arrived.  Haven\'t had much of a chance to play around with it but so far I am very impressed. I\'m waiting on a socket wlan cf, and a viking cf, and a lexar sd card. Anything else I should get? I\'m trying to find a case, but not having much luck. Hopefully the cf and sd cards will get here soon so I can play around with openzaurus or something.  If anyone has any recommendations for software or accessories that would be greatly appreciated.

A screen protector might be a good idea (prevents scratching). There is a debate on which is the best one (soft vs. hard ones) - here are a couple of threads on the topic:

Apart from extra large generic PDA cases I do not think there is anything out there for the 5600 because of the battery bulge.

I replaced the cheap plastic stylus with an official Palm Tungsten T stylus. It fits almost perfectly and is a lot nicer to use with the extra weight and spring loaded extension.

I have also compiled a special kernel for the Sharp ROMs that gets a lot more out of the CPU: http://www.zaurususergroup.com/modules.php...download&sid=53 (http://www.zaurususergroup.com/modules.php?op=modload&name=UpDownload&file=index&req=viewsdownload&sid=53)

I use a fake-leather case for an HP.  After you get some screen protectors, if you decide to remove the clear plastic flip-cover you\'ll want to be careful about the Z turning itself on while in the case.  The Calendar button will also start the voice recorder app so for the first several day\'s I\'d have these recordings of stuff around the office.  I ended up solving it with a small dome of hot-glue applied to the left side of the case close to where the case would touch the on-off button.  The glue presses against the Zaurus\' front and prevents the power button from being pressed.

How about a folding infra-red keyboard.  I have the one from Micro-Innovations and it\'s great!  You\'ll need the IRK drivers from \"cwaig\".

As far as software, I have a journal of what I\'ve played with since getting my 5600 in May.  I haven\'t updated it with this month\'s activies mostly playing with the 1.32 Special ROM that \"ced\" & \"tumnus\" put out.  Here\'s a link to my journal http://users.adelphia.net/~stonerrl/rick/g...rus_journal.htm (http://users.adelphia.net/~stonerrl/rick/geeky/zaurus_journal.htm)

Welcome to the group...  These things are adictive - hope you\'re caught up on your sleep :!:

Thabks for all the replies. I was ordering the socket card from buy.com but they were messing up on the order, so I ended up canceling that and getting the ambicom card from best buy, and its working great! In fact I\'m using the zaurus with that card to post here, while relaxing in the living room on my couch I might add =). So far I am loving the zaurus, haven\'t done much aside from install the terminal, b/c I\'m still waiting on my cf and sd cards which should be here mon or teus. Once they arrive I have a ton of stuff lined up to install. Still debating about which rom to install tho. I\'m leaning towards the Kompany rom. Any suggestions?
