It appears somebody in Japan made a software package that works with USB to VGA devices.
[a href=\"http://symzing.way-nifty.com/blog/2005/11/post_5612.html]http://symzing.way-nifty.com/blog/2005/11/post_5612.html
Could somebody who read Japanese provide more information as to what is said in this post?

Basically, the package provides a driver and presentation application. The usb vga device uses a SiS 315E chipset and has only been tested with the white version of the card which is being sold as VGA out card for Zaurus, although the others might work as well if they have the same chipset but have not been tested.
CFXGA (IO Data) and Voyager VGA (ColorGraphics) are both EOL according to the blog which we know is true for the IO Data one, but haven't heard about the Voyager one being EOL yet.
In order to use the device, you will need a USB host cable and a powered hub. Since it requires USB 2.0 speed, the display using the Zaurus is quite slow.
-
Support for usb vga cards is now in the 2.6 kernel, however there are some devices out thier that suposidly "require" usb 20. and wont work unless it connects to a usb 2.0 port, this seems a bit absurd to me but i found this infomation floating around on then net (isnt it a requirement for all USB certified devices to be backwards compatible)
frame rate wise it should be posible to do about 18 frames a second @ 640*480, 16 bit color
-

Which should be enough to a Powerpoint presentation. or web demonstration. This is a really interesting addition to the Zaurus lineup

This guy has just updated the driver and apparently added some features.
He released the source code so somebody can see whether the driver can be used for other USB VGA dongles.

This is awesome!
Even if the Zaurus would never be to handle decoding full motion video and sending it out the USB bus to the VGA device, couldn't a simple shell be sent to the VGA out.
Excuse my ignorance, if it sounds dumb.

well, up till now, I had to use a vnc server on the zaurus and a vnc client on a pc to display the Zaurus desktop on a larger monitor. This works fine if you can network your Zaurus and the PC, but can't be done directly to a projector. It needs a PC or laptop to be the bridge wheras with this usb device, the zaurus can go directly to a projector or monitor.
for most things like word processing or a terminal, the speed is sufficient. you just can't expect to be playing games or full screen videos.
-
personally all i would want is a shell and some VT's barring that give me screen
as i said 18fps @ 640*480, depending on what you watch it should be fine (anime @15fps is a good way to save space with little impact on quality)

Has anybody from the forum tested it? So, kernel 4.6 can do it but can the standard Zaurus kernel (as modified by Tetsu?) do it as well?
If it works, this is great news for us.

I guess we're waiting for someone on this forum to buy/find one.
I'm eager to hear what it can do, too, but will be a while till I can aford to buy one.

Not unless you backport the drivers from 2.6, they were only included in 2.6.13/12 and currently only suports the VGA devices that will only operate with a usb 2.0 port
there are a couple of new ones that dont have the usb 2.0 requirement but i am unsure if the driver works with them

Do you want to say that this guy's Z running 2.6 kernel? I thought it was stock Sharp ROM and kernel but I can't read Japanese.

I cant speak japanesse but it apears that eveyrhting you need is on the site, your right that looks like a stock kernel or cakco
thogh 2.6 is avalible for the c3k in the openzaurus distros, just mentioned it for compleatness

Ok, I bought that USB to VGA adaptor from Kairen and it just arrived today with my C3000
This is gonna be a fun weekend with so many new toys. I also just bought a SanDisk ConnectPlus CF Wifi card.

Just an update on my findings so far in case someone is interested.
It works as I expected. The adaptor is detected as a sisusbvga device: USB2VGA dongle
It is allocated 8 output buffers with 8MB SDR SDRAM with a bus width of 32 by the driver.
The VGA presentation application allows you to use the dongle for presentation. The app is limited to doing slideshows only. It slowly streams the data to the usb device which then buffers it and displays it to the monitor. I could even switch applications on the Zaurus while the presentation app continued to send data to the usb device and it renders it to the monitor. However, the VGA application crashes after a while
The image on the monitor remains even when rebooting the Zaurus so I guess the last image displayed is buffered by the usb dongle and the monitor is getting the cached data from it.
This proves that it is technically possible to have VGA out for the Zaurus via USB, however, the current state of the driver and application is very limited and needs more work. It is also very slow due to the slow USB bus speed implemented by the Zaurus.
I then plugged the USB dongle into one of my PCs and used it to mirror and split the display on a Win2000 system without any problems. The speed was ok there because it was using USB 2.0 High Speed instead of USB 2.0 Full Speed that the Zaurus uses.

Thats bizare, from what i have read the usb vga card suposidly dont work at all on usb 1.1, guess some infomation needs to be updated.
@Meanie: where did you get it from? and how much?

I’ve been looking for a USB to VGA device. I found one person who claims they got it to work, but their site hasn’t been updated in forever and their site is now lacking that information:
http://zaurus.daemons.gr/menaie/ (http://zaurus.daemons.gr/menaie/)
thought Google has it cached:
http://72.14.203.104/search?q=cache:139Xyv...=2&client=opera (http://72.14.203.104/search?q=cache:139XyvPzBVEJ:www.users.on.net/~hluc/myZaurus/+my+zaurus&hl=en&gl=us&ct=clnk&cd=2&client=opera)
I’ve been interested in this device, though I understand you need a powered USB Hub to run it because of power requirements. Though I’m only truly interested if it can refresh to be SOMEWHAT reasonable for typing.
I’ve seen two different types of devices, the USB and the CF type, which seems to be the best for this type of situation?

Meanie your 9,800 yen toy was the USB to VGA device?
I was also wondering if anyone has seen this little “handy” device
http://www.chait.net/index.php?p=572 (http://www.chait.net/index.php?p=572)
or this
http://www.gizmodo.com/gadgets/top/micromi...tics-154041.php (http://www.gizmodo.com/gadgets/top/micromini-projector-from-light-blue-optics-154041.php)
Certainly a very nice gadget for the coffee shop or real work.
Has anyone been successful in getting the USB to VGA adaptor to work reliably (not necessarily for any full motion video, but maybe for typing/presentations/photo-slideshows?)

Yes. I connected my C3200 running vga-presentation 1.0.1 and using a Kairen USB 2.0 VGA Adapter to a standard data projector, and it worked flawlessly. It takes about a second for the screen to display, but once displayed, it's really working and looks very nice in various resolutions. Technically, everything works just fine.
The only thing is that vga-presentation in its current state only supports automatized slide shows. It's not possible to control them manually, thus making it virtually impossible to use it for presentations. What we need is
-- Manual control for browsing slides (using the arrow keys) (that's a BASIC request!!)
-- Zoom in/out functions (would be nice).
Another option would be to modify photostorage or some other soft that can manipulate images to support output via USB. Maybe that's even simpler ...
Anyway, it's definitely worthwhile giving it a try -- perhaps Meanie could do it? (At least, please update vga-presentation to include manual browsing.)

What about mirroring the actual screen contents with that USB device?

I should have read the Japanese homepage (http://symzing.way-nifty.com/blog/2005/11/post_f52a.html) more carefully from which I had taken the USB-VGA presentation soft (http://symzing.way-nifty.com/blog/files/vga-presentation_1.0.1_arm.ipk). Actually, some of the features I requested are already implemented. So here's an overview of its functions:
-- After choosing your pics (BMP, JPG, PNG), use the left and right arrow keys to rotate them if necessary.
-- For manual output to the VGA adapter, push the space key.
-- For the automatic slide show, there is a special tab.
The author adds that you should remove the USB host cable only after shutting down Vga presentation.
He thinks it may be possible to doublebuffer VRAM to prepare data for the next slide before it is sent to the adapter, making it possible to create effects like wipe and resolve. I have no clue whether that can be done?
Anyway, the source files are here for the presenter (http://symzing.way-nifty.com/blog/files/vga-presentation_1.0.1.tar.gz) and for the driver (http://symzing.way-nifty.com/blog/files/sisusb-driver.tar.gz).

hm - will this driver and software work under pdaXrom? Does the driver need kernel sources in order to be compiled (is it a kernel module or a user space program)?
And: would it be possible to buy an entire batch of these devices? Maybe 10 pcs.?

Actually, the Japanese author used this [a href=\"http://www.winischhofer.at/linuxsisusbvga.shtml]Austrian site in English for compiling the driver. As far as I can see, it's a kernel module. On the author's homepage (http://symzing.way-nifty.com/blog/2005/11/post_f52a.html) you can see some technical details in the readers' comment section; just scroll down the page. Maybe someone can figure out what these data mean.
As for the second question: I ordered my device via Amazon Japan, and I have no doubt that there are still many more available. You may check it yourself here (http://www.amazon.co.jp/dp/B0009NQUTS?tag=symzing-22&camp=243&creative=1615&linkCode=as1&creativeASIN=B0009NQUTS&adid=1PMAT4XC2KP2W74T9MPP&), but it's in Japanese, of course.
By the way: The original idea of this device is to have output from one source on up to three screens at a time, so they have three subtypes (each with a different colour) that can be chained. For our purpose, any of them would do (I bought the blue one, because of its nice colour).

somebody able to compile it for tosa (2.4.18 kernel) under pdaxrom?

But does the presentation software only work with pictures and the presenter slides (Power Point) or only for presenter slides or will it display say what is on the screen, such as the Word Editor/Text Editor or Music Player or console?
My CaCko ROM version has ‘Mirror” which I believe is supposed to “mirror” the display on a presentation card. Is this so and if so, is that a USB to VGA or the Sharp CF to VGA?
I’m running Qtopia 1.5.4
Kernel 2.4.20
CaCko Zaurus Qtopia Rom 1.23 for the SL-C3200

As far as I understood, the SiS (USBVGA) presentation app is only for displaying image files on the output.
But if we have the sources, it can probably be modified to mirror the screen as well.
TheCacko "Mirror" program is actually the cfxgamirror program which mirrors the actual screen contents on the CFXGA card (by IODATA).
However, I have never gotten this to work in a stable way. cfxga always crashed my system, no matter if Cacko or pdaXrom. Well, there is a C++ version of cfxgamirror, which runs stable but is not able to crete good output. Only 480x480 with the remaining screen lines cropped and the right side of the screen black (basically the 640x480 rotated by 90 degrees).

Has there been any progress in the last 8 months on this front? Specifically, has anyone had success mirroring the screen to an external monitor? I typically make my presentations in LaTex and put them in a .pdf file, using href to link to shell scripts to run movies or show simulations. I use acroread in full-screen mode to show the .pdf file, although there's no reason not to use qpdf2. Now, I gather that the refresh rate is too slow for animations or movies, and that's fine for now. But the screen-mirror option is paramount, since I don't want to change how I make presentations.
Also, has anyone tried the new IO DATA usb-to-vga adaptor (http://techlogique.wordpress.com/2007/06/02/usb-to-vga-graphics-adaptor-from-i-o-data/)?
