This concept seems pretty nice (on pen and paper) to have a UI which interacts with the web as well as the back end PIM data to give an instant shot of data and web feeds on the opening screen of the PDA (read Zaurus).

Opera seems to be into it - and right now it is for Smart phone devices.
Can a similar thing be done for PDA's (the Zaurus) ?
"The experimentation is currently being done on Microsoft's Windows Mobile Smartphone and Symbian's S60 software platforms, but it seems likely to work on Linux smartphones as well. "

opie-today already does much of this. PIM data is displayed, as can a stock-ticker (from the web) and weather reports (again from the web).
From the screenshot, this idea isn't that far advanced of what we already have - the only things I can think of that it might be able to do differently are to open pages directly in the today screen (if you click on the headline it'll open it in situ), rather than shelling opera/konq for example. I'm not sure I'm overly bothered about this in truth.
Admittedly the opie-today app doesn't have the flexibility that one would expect from one based entirely on a web browser, but what would you really want, that you couldn't code up to have appear as an 'applet' in opie-today? IMO a news ticker (using RSS?) would be significantly easier to write than an entirely new app.
