Hi everyone,
OK, so I've owned my Z for a week or so, and now it's time for me to start thinking about what software to write for it! I thought I'd try and guage the level of interest for a few of the things I've been thinking about creating, so we shall see what response I get!
A bit more info on the above apps....
Unit Conversion App
This would basically be a port of the program that I wrote for the Palm, called Converter (http://www.mattmarsh.net/computing/converter.shtml) which contains many unit types and was rather popular on the Palm.
Geocaching Tool
For those fellow Geocachers (http://www.geocaching.com/) out there, this would allow you to import cache info, upload to your serial/bluetooth/etc GPS, or use the GPS directly to search for the cache, and upload logs etc
SSH Tunnel Manager
Would allow you to use a GUI to create ssh tunnels to remote networks.
Other
Please let me know what apps you're wanting and I'll consider it if it interests me enough!
Thanks!
Matt

What's wrong with ZUC? I'm using it, works well.
-
ZUC is fine, though on an SL-C860 at least it seems non-perfect... magnified mode of any app looks kind of silly, and non-magnified mode then this app wastes half the screen...
But yes, you're right, we don't exactly need another conversion app, would just be a fairly easy way for me to get into Qtopia application development due to the fact I've written a conversion app before

A VGA unit conversion program *would* be nice...
As a side note, I believe I've actually used Converter, back when I used to use a Clie.
- ashikase
- anpachi, gifu, japan

I've used convertor for my Palm, many moons ago...
I'm going to do a VGA Unit Conversion program (VUC?) as my getting-back-into-Z-programming project. ZUC was a mainstay of my 5x00 loadout, but I deleted it almost immediately upon trying it on the 860.

Yes, that would be great and quite useful, I believe.
I was thinking about to write such an app, but was busy until now with
KO/Pi, KA/Pi, OM/Pi, KP/Pi, NeIC, PwM/Pi ...

I wouldn't mind seeing kstars converted to run on the sharp rom, or gpsdrive perhaps.

you got my vote on GeoCaching. I'm satisfied if somebody can modify ZUC to be native at VGA resolution.

Three "other" apps.
1. GUI for SMB client with Network Browser similar to Windoze
2. Good Maping SW which can use commercial maps
3. Image Viewer / Editor that can cope with large jpegs form a digital camera

I just tried ZUC and it works quite well, I think.
I fixed the layout for the 640x480 display during a coffee break ... I will create some ipk package later.

YEEES! One vote for that! It's difficult to find maps of europe that work in zroadmap.

I hope that you will release code/patches for it :) So we can update it in OE also ;)

1. GUI for SMB client with Network Browser similar to Windoze
So like a GUI which lets you browse the network looking for available windows shares and allows you to mount/unmount them? I can see that would be useful, not sure if I'll get around to it though.
2. Good Maping SW which can use commercial maps
I've thought about the whole map availability problem a bit. It seems to me that to have any chance of this we'd need to talk to the big map vendors that the other GPS solutions out there license the maps from. We'd need to get them to agree some kind of royalty basis, where we would get the maps from them and encrypt them etc, integrate them into mapping software and all that. Then we'd negotiate a royalty fee per copy of the maps that we sell, and sell license keys for that price so all the money would go to the map provider. I don't know if any of them would be willing to enter into such a deal, but that would be my best idea of getting this working for real...
3. Image Viewer / Editor that can cope with large jpegs form a digital camera
I haven't actually tried out the Z image software that's available yet... is none of it sufficient then?

A MIDI sequencer. Nothing fancy. Now that the C3000 has a USB host, use that for the MIDI interface. There are plenty of small USB.MIDI interfaces out there.
I'd love to see it, but I fear it's too specialized an app for the Zaurus.

Actually a low-footprint Front-end GUI to Imagemagic command line tools would be great - since Imagemagick tools works fine for editing - so just wrapping that in a GUI would be perfect and of course a viewer built in with slideshows etc.
(As a viewer the Sharp Photostorage looks and works beautifully).

Perhaps a good rss reader?

How about mindmap software?? Even the venerable DOS 5.0 HP200lx had a great program for this (MM/Lx)

Try bookreader. It does exactly what you want, but not much else.

Thanks zautrix. I guess a 640x480 version is always in the Cxxx people's mind. I'm surprised, nobody adapted that or asked for a native VGA version before. I don't know programming on z at all, so don't know how hard the change actually is. But sounds like a trivial change to zautrix.
the only zroadmap version usable to sharp rom are actually very old. I don't know if the developer is on this board (Is the new versions for OZ roms only?). I think get the latest zroadmap to work in sharp rom is a good starting point.

zautrix: which version did You patched?
In OpenEmbedded we use ZUC 1.1.2ern from http://www.linux-solutions.at/projects/zau...ations-ZUC.html (http://www.linux-solutions.at/projects/zaurus/applications-ZUC.html)
I diffed this with your version - 68998 bytes
Downloaded zuc 1.1 - diff has 81367 bytes
anyway - I will look does it wil work on QVGA devices and then update OE copy of ZUC.

I want to be able to connect a pc keyboard to the zaurus using the infrared port.
I can make the conversion of the keyboard to serial infrared data, but i do not know how to make my own drivers.

Are there any docs available for bookreader? I can't get any of the settings to do anything at all... I'm looking for something to read scans or photos of book pages, so it should fit the image to the display width, scroll up and down the image, and go onto the next/previous file. I assume bookreader is designed for that sort of function, but I can't get the scaling to do anything so don't know if it can scroll. Are there any suitable apps available? I guess a pdf viewer would be ok if the images were first converted...
Thanks.
[Edit: found the docs at [a href=\"http://www.piro.hopto.org/~piro/pukiwiki/pukiwiki.php?BookReader]http://www.piro.hopto.org/~piro/pukiwiki/p....php?BookReader[/url]]

A good GPS tool would be very nice indeed. Being able to pump maps from an online service would be good too (please don't be US-only )
I would probably pay for good GPS software for the zaurus.
I wouldn't, but I'd do QA.
