Title: Keypebble - "host Not Found"
Post by: conn-fused on March 14, 2005, 09:19:01 am
On a SharpROM 2.38 SL5500, I've installed opie_keypebble_1.0.0 (the sharprom version). I have also installed libopie and opie_pics.

The program seems to work fine (ie it loads, and I can open a connect dialogue), but when I tell the program to connect, it fails with the message "Host not found". This dispite the fact that ping finds the hosts.

Has anyone out there used keypebble and overcome this problem? Thanks.

I think you need to use an IP address. It doesn't seem to resolve host names.

Personally I have given up on keypebble altogether. Maybe I'm too stupid, but I never got it to work much for the same reason the original poster didn't. And no, entering an IP address did not work either

In the end I decided on using fbvnc - a framebuffer-based VNC client (http://pocketworkstation.org/fbvnc.html), which, while it might not be everybody's cup of tea, works quite well for me.

Of course, YMMV ...

Best regards,
Chris.

True enough, the secret is not entering an ip address.

I will write again if I get keypebble to work, but in the mean time I'll probably look at fbvnc (thanks for the suggestion).

Some things to try:

Enter a full qualified name (hostname + domain): "tux.home"

Use nmap to check that the host is really listening for incomming vnc clients.

Do not check for screen updates every 1 ms.

Do not use any other scale factor than 1.

Maybe on 5500 devices the fbvnc client is a better choice.

I doubt it has something to do with the model, much rather with the software in use. Let's be honest, Sharp ROM 2.38 has been abandoned by most people a long time ago. If I'd be forced to place a bet, that's where I'd put my money. Chances are keypebble would work fine on 3.10 or 3.13.

But then again there are people like me that still find merit in running 2.38

Best regards,
Chris.
