Title: Some Gps Questions
Post by: bkudria on March 16, 2005, 09:49:58 pm
I'm considering buying a gps device for my 5600.  I have looked at the Haicom and ambicom devices, but they both have a cf interface...I would like to keep my cf slot free; are there any devices that can use the serial interface?  I understand that if I do use the serial interface, I need a special cable...wher could I get such a cable?

Thanks in advance!

Addendum:
I'd like to spend as little as possible, i found the haicom for a steal at http://www.buygpsnow.com/item.aspx?itemid=91 (http://www.buygpsnow.com/item.aspx?itemid=91), but if i could get a serial device for less, i'd be happier.

I took a look at the Garmin, but it doesn't seem to be what I wanted...any other suggestions?  I'd like to keep my cf slot open for my cf card to hold maps, 'casue I think my SD slot is broken.  Again, suggestions appreciated!

I'm also looking at http://www.deluo.com/Merchant2/merchant.mv...ategory_Code=GR (http://www.deluo.com/Merchant2/merchant.mv?Screen=PROD&Store_Code=DE&Product_Code=GPSUN&Category_Code=GR), cause it supports waas, while the terex doesn't.  But does anyone know what adaptor I should get? Or will I have to order one from somewhere else?  Also, is it's evermore chipset supported?

But now, looking over n8a's post at https://www.oesf.org/forums/index.php?showtopic=4264&hl=gps (https://www.oesf.org/forums/index.php?showtopic=4264&hl=gps) , he says the haicom supports a serial interface?  Is this true? if so, this would be perfect.  please advise!

Make your own - that's what I did for my haicom one.

Not sure what you mean there.

Works fine for me.

Looks like I remembered wrongly - the serial lead came with the GPS, that said, so did a pin-out so you could still do your own serial connector.

Well, since the haicom works over serial, that is perfect for me.  thanks for all the suggestions!

I picked up a Garmin eTrex Legend off of Amazon for $120ish.  It comes with the serial cable (For the GPS side), and it does WAAS.  Im too far north to pickup either of the WAAS sat's, but if more get put up there, it'll work.

I've been really happy with the unit, and it is nice to have a standalone GPS if I want to take it camping and dont want my Zaurus out in the woods. It's also nice to not have a huge growth sticking out of the CF slot.

Nah, I've decided to go with the Haicom (but thanks for the advice!)...looking over serialio.com, I'm totally confused which cable I need.  The ZThinCable?  Please help!

You want the standard T3 Serial model I think - I'm not sure about what connector you want on the end.

The serial GPS will have a female connector on the end (I think), but in any case you'll need a null-modem cable too, so you may as well get a standard cable which will plug into a PC directly (i.e. the cable also has a female connector) and use a gender changer.

http://www.semsons.com/syscfmemgps2.html (http://www.semsons.com/syscfmemgps2.html)

Don't know if it works with a Zaurus, but worth investigating, perhaps ?
