Pardon the length.
I'm a long time UNIX type but this ROM business has got me a bit confused. So, I have some general "theoretical" questions, I'd guess you'd call them. I had the Zynergy ROM installed on my 5600--it was on there when I bought it. I kept that for quite a while, but have been trying to learn more about the other UIs/ROMs lately.
According to what I read on the Sharp site, to get the 1.32 ROM installed, you have to have the previous version of the Sharp ROM installed. However, I was able to install the Sharp ROM directly after having Opie/OZ installed. So I am wondering about that. Second, the Sharp ROM seems to still see some of my pkgs from the Opie installation as being there--like it didn't really overwrite the pkg db or the tab settings. These don't run of course, as they were all installed in root. However, other packages that I installed previously (such as the Qt nethack) on the SD card do still run. This also strikes me as weird, since I know how Linux is about dependencies. <head scratching>
I guess the real question is: how do you get an absolute clean install from a ROM flash? Or can you?
I am of two minds about Opie vs GPE on OZ (haven't gotten farther than these 2, the Sharp ROM and Zynergy). GPE seemed a little snappier, but was quite bare. Opie seems like it's getting/had more attention from developers, but I had more trouble with dependencies with it.
Which ROM(s) do folks think have the best (read: "complete"/well-built) feeds out there? Any comments about which is getting more developer attention? I really don't care to set up my own toolchain and compile packages--that's not my cuppa. I can live with a little instability since I want to mainly use the Zaurus for mp3, ssh, doc reader, and games rather than for PIM (that's on my smart phone).
Lastly, I have not been able to get mp3 files to play with the Media Player. I get the error "Unable to play this file." I am guessing it's a codec issue, so I attempted to install libmad and also VLC, but had (of course) dependency problems. Is there any way to get logging/verbose/debug messages out of Media Player? (Or should I ditch it and switch to something else?)
I'm glad to see the forums here a well populated. The dearth of warm bodies at eterne.net/zaurus kinda had me worried.
Any advice appreciated--

Looks like I should have done some more reading before I posted those questions about the "clean install".
I suspect why I am confused has to do with me not realizing that the updater.sh is version specific for the kernels/initrd. I guess I'll have to go over that ground again. Dang this stuff is complicated-- even for a UNIX geek.
I also see that I am not the only one having mp3 troubles, SharpROM or otherwise, so I'll do some more reading to see if I can track down an answer.
But I would still appreciate comments about the ROM feeds...
Thanks--
